Somewhere out there, a lost Metal Gear Solid iPod Touch game photo

It's safe to say that a lot of people were taken by surprise when Kojima Productions first revealed they were working on a Metal Gear Solid title for the iPod Touch/iPhone. But according to Hideo Kojima himself, that wasn't always the case.

The original idea to port the IP to Apple's device had been handled by Konami's digital and mobile division. Kojima and company were only responsible for checking the content, making sure it fit with the feel of the series and its universe. So what happened?

"Oh, this is really a crap game," Kojima says of their first reaction to the now scrapped Metal Gear Solid iPod title.

At that point, Kojima Productions took over, starting the game from scratch. This, he says, is one of the reasons it took longer than six months to develop. The other reason? Their idea had originally contained a stealth element, eventually scrapped. Why?

"Japanese people would mostly be playing it on the train, and every time it stopped, they'd get spotted," he said, half-jokingly.

Would you have rather played a Metal Gear Solid touch stealth title? Do you feel it would have stuck closer to the core of the series' experience?

The first metal gear solid could run easily on the iPod touch, all it would need is a working control scheme, which is certainly feasible with the touch screen and accelerometers. Even just dragging your fingers to move snake, tapping to shoot or stand up/crouch, or just on-screen buttons. Maybe use the accelerometer to aim in first person. Cool stuff. I'd play it.

Could you play it on a train? No, but are people play GoW on their PSP on the train? I wouldn't. (People very well might, but i don't think i've ever seen someone in public a PSP, much less playing it. Ha.)

I am a huge supporter of games for the iPhone/iPod, its a goldmine. Free money! Developers should just be smart and make good control schemes a la the DS and it would be just swell. Also i want an excuse to play MGS1.

There would be no peace and quite on a train, all the jam packed and rowdy crowd would hamper your gaming skills. So a stealth game would be a bad idea.

They could make a game that didn't use the mic and/or accelerometer that was stealth. I don't know how good it'd be, but that's how we've been playing games for as long as I can remember.

MGS Portable Ops proves you can have a portable stealth game. I don't know why the iPod MGS turned out to be so crap but I would have expected the system would be capable of a lot more than some crappy sprite based operation wolf style affair.

Onscreen buttons suck. Period. When iPhone software 3.0 hits and hardware gamepads start to hit the market, then we'll see more traditional gametypes making major waves.

And the iPod MGS is far from crap. It displays a level of polish even the EA games haven't touched yet, and it's certainly the best shooting gallery game on the platform. Mostly because of how they chose to do the targeting reticule; you can drag and tap anywhere on the screen, you don't have to tap the target you're shooting at and hope your fat thumb makes contact.

All I care about is if there was a dose of Kojima humor in the iPod game.
