Some German politicians want their own version of SOPA photo

Members of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union, which form one of the ruling parties in the German government right now, like SOPA so much that they want their own version of it for Germany. While they admit that some parts of it are problematic, they are all for censoring the internet, even stating that such a law would not be about censorship but about "protecting artists from exploitation." They then go on to state that all those who protested against SOPA are basically helping sites like Megaupload with their illegal activities.

While this sure sounds bad, especially since it comes from one of the ruling parties, I'm pretty certain that the German population is going to react as soon as such ideas get closer to become realized. Ever since SOPA and PIPA, people have been paying more attention to these issues, which hopefully will stop ACTA. Still, I'm amazed that some Germans want to import bad ideas like these.

It passed here in Ireland despite people's time-limited efforts to change it, the legislators didn't listen.

Im not sure if they did, but I read media companies were actually suing the government for not passing it fast enough. The implications are almost too insane to want to think about, its depressing stuff.

I'm not surprised. SOPA was just the beginning, there'll be lots of bills like it in lots of countries, apparently. Let's hope reason wins out in the end somehow, but for now it's not looking good.

Brutal. You have straight up religious political parties? I'm so not saying we are better (we're not), but damn. What kind of a chance do you stand if that's the case?

While over here in Ireland, we have our own SOPA that is getting pushed through despite our best efforts.

Hahahaha... Let me collect myself. So. SOPA was intended to prevent artist exploitation? I would argue that it is intended to make sure that artist exploitation continues unabated.

way to be in the loop. Germany among dozens of other countries signed ACTA 5 days ago. but apparently it's not a big news for gaming websites considering that it's not strictly european law since it will be signed by US, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and several other countries as well.

considering that ACTA makes SOPA/PIPA look like a gift for gamers i would be pretty concerned.

The sad part, these bills are more about enabling media control than stopping piracy. I don't agree with piracy, but I do not think there's a real solution without curtailing our rights. If I were running the RIAA and the MPAA, I'd be working to create a strategy that pulls more customers in - rather than pissing existing customers off.

Now if this is some elaborate way to do marketing for a new movie based on George Orwell's 1984, please stop now - just go back to doing viral videos and annoying banner ads that pulldown automatically.

Germany has not yet approved this but is on the fence. And we might get fucked because the EU might overrule the german parliament.

This actually isn't new, there have already been some attempts to censor the internet in Germany, putting warning signs in front of suspicious websites. When PIPA and SOPA came around, we tried to raise awareness on our own gaming site. It's a good thing that the Pirate Party gains seats in parliament, they will make sure that everybody will know about such an act, whether they want to or not.

It's like my home country is trying to get me to move the fuck away. Also I don't expect much of a reaction from the German population and the German game press.
Complacency has been the name of the game for such a long time here, especially when it comes to video games.
I still think it's outrageous that German game publications don't make a bigger deal about the censorship of games here in Germany. Many people are still ill- and miss-informed about the modern state of video games, the discussion of "Killerspiele" (Killer games) is brought up so often and always with bullshit ties to some youth shootings.
Of course all the big-mouthed politicians have no fucking clue what they are talking about but it has still been enough to create a disdain for games among a lot of Germans.
It makes me really sad, Germany can be so nice but this is just shit.

Hey, I know they have good intentions and there's a way to make this work without killing the internet. The reason I protested SOPA was because it was as bad as it was. If the German government can get a bill together that isn't shitty and actually does a good job of what it targets to do (protect artists rights or whatever), then great! However I seriously doubt that will happen.

Fucking vicious circle of life... Its a total catch 22 situation of "if we don't act, politicians win, but if we act they use it as 'reasons' against us"

Either way, If anyone has any idea how people outside certain areas of the world being plagued with this can help fight these situations, I'm all ears. And please urge someone to make an article or feature out of it so more of us can help. This shits gotta stop.

First of all... we don't know if Megaupload did anything illegal yet, that's still up for debate in the courts. And no, Germany govt you can fuck off. I imagine you'd take down any nazi reference under the name of IP protection.

Wow did the miss the point. Megaupload was shut down without SOPA or PIPA involved at all... so tell us again why ACTA or anything else like these are favoring pirates? We're all in favor of stopping piracy, (maybe kids will actually start buying their music instead of stealing it) but not at the expense of shutting down the entire internet and putting possibly millions of people out of work. Hey... we're trying to save your jobs here. If Youtube, Facebook and Twitter all get shut down because a major record label sues the next Justin Beaver for copyright infringement, A LOT of people are going to hate you for passing this bill. You should be thanking us for bringing these bills' problems to your attention!!!
