Mega Man 9 packaging

Remember that sweet Mega Man 9 retail packaging? You know, the one that was initially limited to press only until retro fans went absolutely nuts over it and Capcom agreed to sell a small quantity through their online store? Yeah, well, there's a few less of them available now.

It seems that some people have been given the opportunity to pick one up early. According to their message to these folks, the chance is being offered to early commenters, known Mega Man fans and people who've paid them off. The last one is almost certainly a lie, because I sent my bribe off weeks ago and haven't heard squat.

Folks who are able to buy the package now are having to pay $50 for the NES cart, box and disc of press assets. Combined with the price of the game (no download code is included in the package), that would bring the price right in line with a modern retail release. There's no confirmation at this time as to whether this is the price the rest of us will get to pay, but I can't imagine them asking a whole lot more.

Are you willing to throw down fifty smackers for a non-functioning NES cart and nostalgia?

I got my order in for one today. I can definitely say I cried with glee upon receiving my notice to be able to order it early. :D

No, I wouldn't pay $50 for it. If the cart worked, it'd be a different story...

If I could send in one of my old NES carts and have them refurbish it, I'd pay a few dollars. Not $50, though.

darkair: I'm assuming you made that yourself. I'm totally down with that! Mind sharing the files you used to print that out?

Wow, I thought a copy of the game was on that disc that I would be able to keep in the future. As much as I love the packaging, $50 for a box and disc full of garbage isn't worth it.

Holy fuck, $50?! Capcom's really screwing the pooch with their pricing, of late. It'd be cheaper, and not even all that difficult, for someone to just print out the MM9 art, gut an old cart, and make it themselves. You'd think they could at least put a code for the game in there or something. Geez.

It's 50 bucks because theres only 200 of them being made.

For something that there's a million of? No way. For something that there are only 200 of plus some press copies, HELL YES. I'm not even a big Mega Man fan, I just think that's some really cool retro art, and this would be a really cool thing to have in anyone's gaming collection.

I think I'd just like to know why it's $50. The materials and production couldn't possibly have cost anywhere near that. A $40 360 game probably costs more to produce. Is it a lack of usable NES carts? Because there are tons of flea markets and game stores with generic, cheap carts lying around, just waiting to be gutted.

I mean, sure, it's limited edition. But that alone doesn't justify $50, when you're not even getting something that's functional. (I mean, I guess it could qualify as an art piece, but that doesn't seem like how they're marketing it.) This just smacks of more abuse of the easy, nostalgia-drunk fanbase.

Feel free to call me a whiner and dismiss me as a horrible, horrible person, though. That's totally fair.

Its fifty bucks because, no doubt, their marketing/sales dicks told them that they could soak hardcore fans for that much on a large enough scale to turn a tidy profit.

And the marketing dicks were probably right. My gut feeling (and it is only that) is that say of all the people who would pay $20 or $30 dollars for the limited edition kit, 80% of that group would go as has as $50. I mean its a very niche appeal item, I don't think there is really a huge group they're turning off who would seriously buy this for $25 but wouldn't go as high as $50. They'll probably pocket more this way, I wouldn't doubt it.

They don't need to justify $50 because its a foolish/awesome limited edition gimmick that cost them $5 bucks to make (if that). If they charged $9 for a $5 product, they might have to justify it, but at this rate, its a blatant "So you like retro huh?" gouge, and I don't think they make any attempt to veil that.

Also, I'm surprised that anybody thought this would be a functional NES cart - didn't earliar picks show the grey shell cracked open with the disc inside?

When you only make 200 of something it costs WAY more to manufacture. Thats why it's 50 bucks.

For the record, I would not pay $50 dollars for it, for one thing, among many, I don't need any more collectable-style clutter, I'm trying to tidy up. I'm not hardcore against superfluous items and tchotchkes, its just I have enough stuff like this filling shelf-space that I would be hard pressed to open my wallet for anything else at the moment.

But, I do agree that it is a brilliant looking piece of work, and I commend anybody who does buy it for their good taste in over-priced knickknacks.

Its a very cool premium item for a very cool game. Whoever it was at Capcom that got this whole ball rolling should be put in charge.

I got the invite and I live with a Mega Man fanboy. I think he was going to disown me if I didn't buy it.

It'll make him happy so whatever.

Try using hornet chaser, worked for me. I know that doesn't make any sense, using hornets to attack someone underwater...
