SOCOM remains popular on PSN, beating Killzone 2 photo

Despite being in abysmal condition at launch (and for many weeks after), SOCOM Confrontation has managed to stay popular with PlayStation 3 owners. Speaking with Joystiq this morning in New York, SCEA senior producer Mark Rogers said that the game has the most simultaneously connected users on PlayStation Network. Meaning that the title has beaten even the mighty Killzone 2 in terms of PSN players.

Rogers believes Confrontation is still bumpin’ because of the community, who have proven to be as a resilient bunch, constantly downloading patches and updating the once-crippled simulation shooter.

In a better bit of news, there’s a good chance that the Confrontation player base are all Bluetooth headset-carrying members of the PSN community. Voice chat is good guys; use it more often ... whenever you get around to playing a different game.

I bought Confrontation a little after Christmas, played for about an hour, downloaded the trophy patch, said "Holy fuck" at how daunting all those trophies and the game as a whole looked and never logged on again. Couldn't get into it.

True story.

I pretty much ignored it since the critics tore it into little pieces. I realize the main complaint involved the bugs; it's too bad the critics don't re-review often, like Eurogamer does sometimes...maybe the bugs have been remedied?

I play it every now and then, I barely experience any trouble that tormented the game before.

Now If I can just find a time the FNF guys are willing to play that doesn't go after my fucking awful curfew...

@ Waquan, 1up.com did a re-review actually after all the improvements. It got a better letter grade.

I bought this game only because it came with the head set and it was on sale at Eb for 39.99. I played this for a little bit, couldn't get into it, but its a tough shooter and the guys that play are are actually pretty kool. It just wasn't my cup of tea in terms of gameplay, its way to tactical for my liking.

Higher than COD4? Amazing! I wish KZ2 had top spot simply because it's the game I prefer to play online right now. But I guess Socom has more brand recognition and is much cheaper.

Also, that header image is from pre-alpha I believe. But the look on the guy's face is pretty well descriptive of what I did when I read the news.

Likewise

As for SOCOM being so popular? I don't care. I actually got offended at how unplayable and unfinished that game was at launch and I never got over it. I didn't even like SOCOM from before and I still got offended somehow.

i was lucky, here in the UK it got delayed until it was fixed, so we got a fully functioning, bug free, super realistic, intense, competitive shooter on day one.

I still play a fair bit of Socom, I love it! Despite how fucking hard it is!

It's a nice change from kill kill die kill die kill kill kill die die die.

It's all about teamwork and skill, rather than running around like a mad man with a machine gun.

I find it really hard to believe. Whenever I want to play Killzone 2 I never have problems finding a game. In Socom on the other hand. Maybe that's because I only want to play with friends. Not with some random glitching douchebags. Can't wait for the big next patch to arrive. That should make things even better.

Socom isn't a bad game. In fact like it. But I'd rather play Killzone.

when they finally release patch 1.5 (and soon 1.6 right after), its going to be the full experience they said it would be with clan tournaments and all the guns and no lag

I'd really like to know what they mean by "most simultaneously connected users on PlayStation Network"... are they referring to Friday nights from 8pm to 9pm... or are they referring to weekly usage stats... or overall usage stats (because SOCOM was released much earlier than SOCOM), or was this a one time occurrence??

I hate it when they throw out a statement and don't back it up with specifics. I don't disbelieve the statement.. heck, even Warhawk still does well in terms of weekly usage stats and comes close to Killzone usage for some weeks, but I do wish they would be more specific.
