SOCOM 4 multiplayer aims to keep old & new fans satisfied photo

Zipper Interactive is modernizing the tactical shooter with SOCOM 4. Designer Ben Jones summed up the accessibility-oriented changes -- which include regenerating health and a cover system -- as "the evolution of the SOCOM franchise." Of course, change can be scary for longtime fans; many SOCOM die-hards are already dismissing this game as a dumbed-down "SOCoD" (for Call of Duty).

But fear not: the multiplayer component of SOCOM 4 will offer two ways to play. Gamers who are new to the series will likely stick with the "standard" setup, which includes the changes that Zipper has made to the way SOCOM plays. And for old-timers, "classic" gameplay is also available. There's no regenerating health and no cover -- the game plays just like the PS2 SOCOM titles. Depending on the gametype, matches can be as small as four-on-four or as large as 16-on-16.

In fact, your SOCOM 4 multiplayer experience will be fully customizable. There's a wide array of options to mess with in custom private games, which reminds me of good ol' "Slappers Only" matches in Perfect Dark. And Zipper will be tracking all of the games that people play, so if the developers notice that a particular setup is popular among custom games, they have the ability to turn those custom games into ranked games, which will allow players to earn experience points in them.

I guess this is part of the reason why Jones called SOCOM 4 "the real first SOCOM on the PS3." If you want to try it yourself, the game comes out on April 19th, but you can gain access to the upcoming multiplayer beta by buying specially marked copies of Killzone 3.

'Slappers Only' in perfect dark? I'm sure you mean Slappers only in Goldeneye 007.

@Epic-KxDtoid: I never played GoldenEye much; Perfect Dark was the game that my buddies and I played every day after school.

This is a good compromise, getting rid of what makes socom well socom would be suicide, but apparently not being able to take a rocket to the face and hide behind a rock for a minute and recovering scares this new generations.

Back in my day I got three lives and if I didn't beat the game back to the beginning with my ass.

Also, consider me stoked for classic socom gameplay.

Maybe they should keep us happy by putting health packs back in.

That was, to me, essential to SOCOM.

I remain cautiously optimistic.

either way, April 19th can't come soon enough.

I still don't think this will keep the old SOCOM fans satisfied. As far as I know, there's still game modes that are not in the new one (demo, anyone), there's still matchmaking instead of lobbies, no pistols, no lean, no grenade arch, the camera is still over the shoulder and no round based matches with tie breaker rounds. I was actually going to get SOCOM 4 (and it would've been the first one that I actually played online) but with the fact that its beginning to turn into another CoD clone, I'll pass.

I see how Zipper is trying to do right by everyone, but I don't know. I never really felt the pull of MAG, and if it is Zipper's choosing to make a more MAG like Socom I may just have to rent it, and feel it out a bit.

Honestly, they won't be able to make SOCOM fans happy at all. Old School fans at least. There will alway be something ppl cry about, no matter how good the game is.

I don't know why they couldn't just stick with the old formula. SOCOM 3 was one of the best-selling games on the PS2. The series in general was just about the only online game that a lot of people played. They wouldn't have been wanting for sales if they just kept the old fans happy.

@Keegah, but dude, at the time it was just about the only online console game there was, at least on the PS2!

Seriously, online gaming has changed a lot since then, I think to evolve with the new but ALSO keep the old in there for fans is pure fucking awesome!

This game will have a full blown "community transfusion" with this title.Meaning, it will have an entirely new fanbase. They can call it classic mode all they want, but if you've been paying attention to the latest and greatest information thats out there regarding this game, then you'd know theres ALMOST NOTHING classic about it. For God's sake, if there's any Socom vets in here, please don't go out and buy this game until you've at least played the beta, or watched for reviews from blackwido88 on Youtube. I'm telling you right now people, this is a game for an entirely different audience. This coming from a guy who truly appreciated the whole concept of Socom 1 and Socom 2 back in the day, and hated cheaters with a deep seeded passion. This game could have been the cream of the crop, had it not been for all the copy cat ideas that Zipper has borrowed from other games. They are not staying true to the formula that made this game BETTER THAN ANY OTHER COMPETETIVE SHOOTER OUT THERE... Thanks for listening...Good luck noobs.

The writer of this article clearly knows nothing about Socom and is taking Zippers word for it. No jump to climb, no grenade and shotty knockdowns, no lobbies, no old game modes aside from the Socom 3 version of suppression, no pistols, no lean feature, no guns hot, a sprint button, OTS alternate view instead of the classic FPV alternate, The camera is way to close making the character itself obstuct view, No more picking up weapons or any type of grenades unless its the items in your loadout when the round started. This game is very day from playing like the PS 2 Socoms even in classic mode. In fact there is only three returning Socom features in this game from the past. The rest is completely overhauled, yes classic mode is overhauled to.
