The big secret sequel that Sony was working on has been revealed ahead of time, and no it's not Killzone 3, inFAMOUS 2, or any of the other big games people were expecting. It is, in fact, SOCOM 4, developed by original series creator Zipper Interactive. Yep, that's the big game, folks!
SOCOM 4 is set in South East Asia, where a revolutionary army attempts to screw up the world's economy by taking a crucial waterway. It's up to the five-man Ops Com squad to put an end to these nefarious baddies and save the world.
Your mission is to step into the well-worn boots of the Ops Com, a NATO Operations Commander of an elite, five-man squad. You must venture deep into inhospitable jungles, city streets and crumbling urban ruins to engage an army of rebel fighters and discover their plans. Although you’re vastly outnumbered, you’re armed with the latest weaponry and your men are second to none – but do you possess the stealth, speed and tactical thinking to lead them to victory? Time is not on your side: you have just six days to complete your mission. To emerge victorious, you must lead from the front, maintain control of the situation and fight with sheer intensity.
As well as the single-player campaign, there will be a 32-player online mode as well. GTTV will have an exclusive trailer later, but for now, enjoy the imagery and hype! Or be crushingly disappointed because it wasn't what you were expecting. Your call!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Na.
I mean MAG sales went down more harder than I've ever seen following release, and was far from critically acclaimed. Why the fuck would they announce Socom 4 now instead of E3 or early 2011? I'll take the rumored motion waggle KZ3 over this news.
But if this gets good review I may very well give it a whirl.
SOCOM 4 by Zipper.... Fuck yeah!
I still can't grasp why Socom survived beyond the first sequel. *sigh*
Another hope for Sly 4 gone with the wind.
I'm still on the fence, but depending on the direction this is heading (offering an offline, story driven experience again is a fantastic step in the right direction) it may make it a day one purchase for me..... but I'll wait and see.
it's painfully clearly that socom is a game that few give a shit about, it is not a system seller, nor is it a exclusive worth bragging about.
I enjoy Confrontation, but there's definitely room for improvement there. Hopefully Zipper can bring the franchise back to life.
Because SOCOM kicks ass.
SOCOM 4.FUCK YES.
not a tv show...
Granted, they are fairly different. And I haven't played a SOCOM game in years, maybe I'd like them better, now. So congrats to fans of the series, I suppose.
The Socom series was mostly good, but I've never been into them really and this sequel surprise is not worthy!
people generally don't care enough to post about something when they don't have much of an opinion on it.
The cat meowth the truth.
(They've been working on it for over a year now! Surely there must be some news...)
