So you wanted that Wii Backup Loader? Too bad photo

Remember that Wii Backup Loader I chatted you up about last week, that would "swing open" the doors of piracy for the not so clever yo-ho-ho's that hadn't hacked their own consoles months ago? Apparently I shouldn't have told you about it, as it seems I ruined the surprise. From the developer's site:

"Congratulations! I don't care about who leaked Backup-Loader but now it's OFFICIALLY an abandoned project. Enjoy it."

Oh no! We talked about news on the internet! I feel bad now, I really do. Since this guy was the only one to create this particular method, there's only one major hole for Nintendo to patch and it would leave future hackers in the dirt as to where to begin when it comes to this method. Oh well, I guess you'll just have to buy official Nintendo products or invent your own method. I hate the idea of Reggie using my money to get meatier, but what can I do.

[Thanks, Pew!]

Actually, it wasn't you. An actual beta version of the file was leaked on the interwebs sometime over last night. That's what Wananiko is so P.O'd about.

Prolly a good thing, too. Stuff like this was responsible for killing the Dreamcast back in the day.

He's been working on this since March, and given up just like that. That's bad enough in itself, but he decided to stop working on this because his software has been pirated?
You know, his software for PIRATING?

Pot calling the kettle black there mister.
Methinks this wasn't going to be freeware, or he wouldn't have thrown his toys out the pram so hard. It will be now someone else has the code...

Good, mainstream piracy is bad news for semi-intelligent pirates like myself. Once its becomes easy, Nintendo will pay much more attention to fixing it. Please, leave my free videogames alone...

I guess this can be filed under the no honor among thieves category, as Alucard said.

That picture is perfect too

If something that I've invested about $600 worth between the system, accessories, and games dies, then yes. Yes, it's a bad thing.

Um... Pretty sure the reason he's pissed about the code being leaked is now anybody can look at the code and see how he's able to exploit the Wii's system code. So now Nintendo can look at it and have the exploit fixed before he ever releases his product.

It isn't a matter of pride or something getting stolen. By relesing the code the beta tester pretty much told Nintendo how he's going to do it, so continuing is pointless.

@ ruiner:
Are you sure this sort of killed the Dreamcast and not, say, a lack of sales and 3rd party support, possibly related to a nonexistent sales campaign? I don't mean that sarcastically, I'm genuinely curious.

We need to come up with a term for pirates who knock on other pirates for being pirates. The term hypocrites fits the bill, but just isnt juicy enough. How about scallywag, sounds piraty.

Loool, no pirated Wii games for you guys! As much as getting code stolen from you sucks and his project was a pretty great endeavor for a programmer. I don't feel bad that the pirating masses don't get their free Wii games.

If you want it, buy it. If you play alot of games, gamefly is what $20 a month? In 3 months you pay the equivalent of an untaxed release game but probably played more 4-5 games worth $50-$60 in that period of time thus you win.

@Zero Atma: Piracy is no more responsible for killing a failed platform than a mega-popular platform. Everybody developer deals with piracy and the industry stays afloat, just as it has for 20 years.
