So what's this about Perfect Dark coming to XBLA? photo

A few days ago, an eagle-eyed user on NeoGAF spotted something interesting in a screenshot of a Banjo-Tooie premium Xbox 360 theme, posted by online by Rare.

As you can see in the close up above, this particular user has been playing Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Death Tank, the Xbox LIVE Arcade version of Banjo-Tooie, and... wait... what's that? Is that an icon of Joanna Dark from the Nintendo 64 version of Perfect Dark? So let's jump to conclusions -- maybe Rare is prepping an XBLA version of Perfect Dark! Hey, they recently "ported" over two Nintendo 64 games, Banjo-Kazooie and the upcoming Banjo-Tooie, right? It could happen.

But here's what we know, based on what our sources tell us: the icon you're seeing is for a game that's internally called "Bean." No, we're not exactly sure what it is, but this is the same game that was rumored to be the (reportedly) canceled GoldenEye XBLA title. Early last year, a Web site called Xbox Evolved reported something similar on a "Bean Project," saying that the game looks "very similar to GoldenEye, although some models, and other parts of the game are a bit different."

We can't verify that last bit, but we can verify with 100% certainty that the icon you see above is for something called "Bean," and that folks at Rare were playing it as recently as November of last year. With E3 coming up, if Rare and Microsoft do have something to announce, perhaps we'll know sooner rather than later.

If they clean up the frame rate issues and added online play then I would be all about it.

I hope they port over every Rare classic (that Nintendo doesn't have rights on), like the original Conker's Bad Fur Day.

I do miss the Dragon. It was fun throwing it near the weapon spawn and seeing people run for it and explode!

I doubt it's coming to XBLA. But one can only hope.

I hope Rare get it's shit together and actually become a great video game company like they used to during the Nintendo 64 era...

How about releasing Blast Corps? Donkey Kong? Killer Instinct? Another Conker game? MOTHER FUCKING BATTLETOADS?!

Good thing my N64 still works, I bought it's cart in January. Fucking frustrating sometimes but so old-school.

I find ironic that Rare was a powerhouse of ideas back in the laste 90s and they were too limited with Nintendo's no-gore policy. Now they are practically unlimited, they haven't done almost anything. Maybe they preferred to be under the pressure of doing the wrong thing.

This is all I've ever wanted. Online PD multiplayer.

That and a third Golden Sun.

I wonder if Perfect Dark running on a 360 wouldn't have ridiculous slowdown when there are more than two explosions on screen.

So...if it's similar, but uses different models...is it a reskinned Goldeneye with a new cast and storyline, free from the Bond license? Somehow, I don't think people will be happy with that, since nostalgia is the only reason people think Goldeneye is still a good game. A port of Perfect Dark would still be able to play on that nostalgia and probably be more worth it.

As for other games, I never got to play Jet Force Gemini or the original non-Xbox version of Conker's Bad Fur Day, so those would be appreciated...

Fun Fact: Sean Bean played Trevelyan in the GoldenEye film.

Coincidence? Probably.

It means nothing, Rare is notorious for fucking with their fans.

And Goldeneye didn't happen because Rare doesn't have the rights to Bond anymore. They do own PD so this is possible.

@Chronic

You want Rare(A Microsoft owned company) to make a Donkey Kong game(A Nintendo owned IP)?

The rest I agree though.

I would absolutely buy a 360 for that. No joking.

@Kyousuke Nanbu

No, I mean Rare can't make another Donkey Kong game, but they can probably port the games they did make like the Donkey Kong Country series or Donkey Kong 64 to the Xbox Live. Although the post-Rare Donkey Kong games hasn't quite been the same...

No they can't, its the same issue as Goldeneye, they made the game but don't own the license.

An updated blast corps would rock though, as long they don't include the backlash, fuck the backlash.

It would be hilarious if, to get around the Bond license.... the whole game was turned into a Mr Bean game (as mentioned above).... but used all the levels and weapons from Goldeneye, just slightly modified.

It'd be like bizarro Goldeneye.
