Game Informer has the exclusive on Epic Mickey, and Game Informer is carrying that exclusive around like a cat with a freshly killed rat. In preparation for its big magazine unveiling, GI has today posted some imagery and artwork to wet the whistle, including an image of the redesigned Mickey Mouse.
As you can see, he's got a distinct retro look to him, but updated with a modern sheen. He certainly looks better than the weird man-ape character that Mickey has been immortalized as. Something about Mickey Mouse and his bear, human-pigmented face skin has always made me feel slightly queasy. I'm glad he's going back to his roots in this game.
Head on over to GI's site to check out some more images, including a robotic Donald Duck. This is looking to be one supremely twisted game, and you don't get to say that often about a Disney product these days.
Jim Sterling serves as reviews editor for Destructoid.com, head of the Podtoid podcast, and produces a number of news stories, original features, one-of-a-kind videos. With his passionate argumentative style, controversial opinions, harsh delivery, and dedication to brutal honesty Sterling is a name that you can't help but recognize.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'm not as excited, but will still buy a Wii for this game.
I can’t wait for Epic Mickey to come to Europe. Especially ‘cause in Ireland a “Mickey” is slang for a mans.....you know...thing. So when we hear “Epic Mickey” the first thing that comes to mind is a massive.....you know.
Oh, and the game might be good too.
Agreed. I was expecting something...more apocalyptic? I dunno. But more.
Right, Jim? Huh?
It looks a bit similar in that Mickey is re-visiting all his old famous shorts, which is awesome.
have you actually read the GI magazine?
I have, and in the article it shows screenshots. None of which looked anything like the concept art.It actually looked cutesy again. It's a shame too seeing as how this is a Warren Spector Game.
And Disney has lost it's roots, stopped making quality movies, pumped out crap tv on Disney Channel and creates annoying as hell kid-artists without talent. Sorry, I won't buy this.
What, did you wanted him with a gun that shot chainsaws?
....
which would have been cool, bit it's not the point. this one is fully dedicated to the lost animation from the past and is looking pretty freaking dark for what it is
Game looks really boring and kind of generic, honestly.
Also, the graphics are GC quality. WTF?
That's exactly what I expected Mickey to look like though (and I'm down).
You're looking at early animation test shots and concept art. For god sake the game doesn't even come out for another full year. Are you really going to write it off, from just seeing it in its earliest form?
The pictures I see in my GI in front of me do not look like "test shots". These look like real gameplay to me, and that gameplay looks boring.
The concept art was much more interesting looking.
EDS had it right. The concept art looked so much more interesting. Darker and more adult yet still disney. As someone else said, this game looks like ''tim burton lite'' more than anything truly special and outstanding.
I haven't totally written the game off yet, but it's going to need a strong, strong come back to get me hyped again.
But, to be honest, I am not particularly thrilled about the visual style used as seen in the pages of GI. It looks ... mediocre. And while I have no real attachment to Mickey Mouse or the cartoons regardless of the era or style, I wonder if Epic Mickey has gone TOO far back in time for inspiration. Do folks nowadays know about those really old school Mickey cartoons?
It's akin to when wrestling programs trot out hall of famers expecting a crowd largely contingent of children to cheer and be enthusiastic. That simply does not work because those kids have no idea who the Honky Tonk Man or Sgt. Slaughter are.
I was referring to all the people who looked at just those pictures of Mickey up there and started complaining. I haven't seen the magazine, so I can't comment on that.
