I'm willing to bet most of you think that the first-person shooter genre has been overdone, possibly even to the point where the number of "new" Mega Man games released during any given month seems reasonable in comparison.
That's how the people at TimeGate Studios feel, but instead of just wishing for a solution to this FPS dilemma, they're actually going to try to come up with something we've never seen before.
What exactly that "something" is, I'm not really sure -- neither the press release nor the above video go into specifics other than referencing player-driven control, on-demand vehicles, and the need for constantly shifting battle plans.
Guess we'll just have to wait for more of Section 8 to be revealed before we can truly believe these buzzwords.
Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied: "bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Some pretty lofty claims they got going there. Hope it doesn't come back to bite them in the ass by being over ambitious. Although, I was a fan of "why would we want to make a crysis/halo killer? They are beautiful games" It's definitely refreshing to see someone go into a genre without the objective of beating out the current 'best' or most popular game. When you do that, you're destined for failure.
Sounds like a lot of wank to me. Dice's 'Mirrors Edge' looks like a real innovation on the FPS genre, Section 8 looks like they're desperately fishing for hype without any bait.
On the other hand, ever looked up the defenition for Section 8? The internetz say: "In the 1950s, Section 8 discharges were commonly given to service members found guilty of "Sexual Perversion,"; Maybe their innovation is some virtual orgasmic rape? Now that's a game I'd be willing to play.
yeah, i just saw this video earlier today and it looks kinda sweet.
@jkh13, i think they have a pretty good track record. Kohan as well as Axis and Allies are solid games. on top of that, the FEAR expansions weren't all that bad. I mean, all they did was copy the formula from the game and copy it and throw in some more story. They delivered what the publisher ordered.
I'm mildly excited. This video is absolutely non-informative. I see a couple of guys telling they're going to make a WHOLE NEW game in an existing genre while making fake phone-calls to look interesting. OK, granted the little things they show look pretty good. But I want to see some gameplay. We can all make movies like this about how frickin awesome our game is going to be without showing anything apart from some vids and renders. It's better to talk less and deliver more. I've heard one to many stories about how new and great a game is going to be.
This video told pretty much nothing except that the developers think they have an awesome game and want us to play the demo when it comes out. And FEAR Extraction Point was terrible.
But this.... is kinda win? I'm not sure. We as gamers are used to being burned by false promises (cough cough fable cough cough) but they exude a confidence that intrigues me to say in the least.
every FPS is revolutionary in its development stages... however few of them actually hold out in their final releases... I've been dissapointed too many times by trailers like this to actually still believe this 'revolutionary' crap :-)
I'll see it when its out and if its a good FPS I'll play it, even if it isn't revolutionary at all... games don't have to be revolutionary to me, they just have to be GOOD!
We'll find out. Knowing it's and FPS is enough to turn many away, and hearing what seems like the generic pitch now make people even warier. As with any dev tho, I hope they can do what they mean to do, and do it well.
I didn't see any gameplay. Is this a game about designers talking about how their new game is going to be the best evar? If so I'm pre-ordering right now.
Haven't we been promised a lot of revolutionary first person shooters over the last few years? I'm still waiting for one to come to fruition: The Crossing, Huxley, etc.
Wasn't Huxley supposed to be coming out this month? Meh.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. i kid, i kid. looks cool.
"ITS WII EXCLUSIVE."
LOL
I'd rather want a mech game that plays like a really fast fps.
Also Mirrors Edge does sound awesome, I really want to hear more about that.
But this.... is kinda win? I'm not sure. We as gamers are used to being burned by false promises (cough cough fable cough cough) but they exude a confidence that intrigues me to say in the least.
I'm more interested in Mirror's Edge for my first-person innovation though.
All words we have heard before
"No fight is the same"
"Innovative this and dynamic that"
"Nothing you've ever seen before"
blah blah blah
When you are constantly barraged with this shit, you learn to take everything you hear with a grain of salt.
Is this only for the PS3? I want to know how excited I should prepare to possibly get.

So, no Wii-version? D:
Why? Because a dude is wearing armor? I didn't see anything that reminded me of Halo.
Wasn't Huxley supposed to be coming out this month? Meh.
