Here it comes, ladies and gentlemen -- the onslaught of Grand Theft Auto IV coverage that's guaranteed to both anger you (because you don't have it) and spoil all of the good stuff (because you don't have it ... yet).

IGN has posted their full review of the game, which spans seven pages, and ends in them awarding the game a 10 out of 10. I refuse to read the review myself -- playing the game for a few hours was almost enough of a spoiler for me. But browsing the first paragraph, I read this: "Without question, Grand Theft Auto IV is the best game since Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time." Well then.

So the game is good. We get it. While waiting by my door for the FedEx man to arrive with my copy for review (no, it didn't come), I realized something -- does it really matter? You're all going to run out and buy the game either at launch or a few days later. If I gave the game a three out of 10, you'd call me a "tw@"and buy it anyway. It's Grand Theft Auto IV, man. If the game came with trace amounts of anthrax lining the instruction manual, you'd still be lined up for the midnight release.

Is there anyone here not planning on buying GTA IV? If so, please give some compelling reasons why, and provide scans of your medical records, because I don't think you're well.

[Thanks, Ben!]

The thing is, while I take IGN with a rock of salt, I will bite the bullet and say quite possibly that they are right on this one. Combining all the complaints I have heard so far (6ish reviews) they go like this... no real spoilers here:

Controls and aiming can still be a little ganky in stairwells

Shooting much improved, but not perfect (can still target incapacitated characters)

Still some pop-in/fade-in

One person complained that many of the missions didn't push the storyline forward and were "filler".

.....

That's about it. Seriously, if a game as big and good as GTA IV is, and this is the only set of complaints it gets. Then I think a 10/10 is deserving.

@naia-the-gamer

I know this makes me sound like one of those assholes from the PTC, but I'd entertain reasons why I should play one of the games.

Do I need to play them in a certain order?

No, there will be certain inside jokes you will miss if you play GTA San Andreas before GTAIII. On the other hand, you don't have to have played any of the games to play GTA IV.
......................(MINOR SPOILER)........................

The only returning characters are some of the DJs
..............................................................
The games follow a semi linear path. It is much more of a tree, you have the main story (trunk) but you can follow many side quests, or just do little things within the games (branches).

Is there an actual story or is it just "anything goes?"

There are stories, they grow progressively stronger as you climb the game ladder (GTA III<GTA VC<GTA SA<GTA IV) I recommend giving GTA IV a try. It changes the overall story telling of the series, and changes how the characters are developed. Niko is a much more likeable and sympathetic character than the over the top guys of the previous installments (from everything I've heard).

@naia - The game most certainly does have a story, and a full story mode. At the same time, it's also taken as a "sand-box" game by many people (such as myself) just to play around, and have fun with. If it's not your cup of tea, then it's not your cup of tea, just don't go blaming it for every kid who goes out and does something illegal :P

11/10.

I'm serial, my jaw is on the floor. I remember reading the SoulClabber article and going z0mg ign gave something a 10.

I got chills when I saw this one. Wow.

I don't think moneyhats are involved. I will be in line, possibly working behind the counter (for fun).

I think this could be the greatest thing since sliced bread.

My name is Balth, and I'm a PS3 owner.

Oh yeah, PS3 version is superior! Suck it RROD!

that is all.

Certainly not planning on picking it up anytime soon. I was rather disappointed with San Andreas, which got a 9.9 from IGN. Their rating is something I'd take with a grain of salt.

Unless GTA IV really is that masterful piece of storytelling, I think I'll wait until a bunch of people have traded it in to pick it up, if at all.

I don't know, I buy every GTA and do the same thing - run around and cause mayhem and try to rack up 5 stars. Invincibility + weapons cheats make it much more fun, then I go for stunt multi-kills. That and my wife has an extreme dislike for the series so I can't really enjoy playing it while she's awake. You know how that is.

I own every GTA home console title thus far released (skipped the GBA and PSP games). Sadly, I have never been able to play through any of them for more than 2 hours before getting extremely bored. I'm an optimistic dude. I thought that video game reviews must mean something, that these games couldn't be the total crap that they seemed to be. I thought it was just me, and that I'd eventually "get it".

Well, maybe it is just me, but I'm still the same "me" that has no use for the PS1 and PS@ GTA games, and GTA IV looks like more of the same. By that I mean, more or the same empty, souless fetch quests, flat gameplay progression, truly weak combat system, and the same Tarantino wanna-be, direct to DVD movie flavored scenario.

And I didn't like Ocarina of Time either.

Argh! No game deserves a 10/10! There are always a few flaws no matter how well polished a game can be. Heck, the IGN review stated some technical flaws but still gave it FLAWLESS VICTORY! I have no doubts this will be a great game, but why bother to be objective and still turn out a perfect score? Meh.

@Hoss,

I agree with much of your words. While I personally enjoy the GTA series, I can see why you do not.

But tha was not what made me squint. Did you just say you were going to wait for a review from Zero Punctuation? I wasn't aware anyone looked to ZP as a reviewing factor. I always took to it at a humorous take on most any game he commented on more than I took his word as a reviewer.

This comes to a shock for me, I must admit! Zero Punctuation, an actual reviewer and not "Gamer Comedian"?! Amazing I say. Simply amazing. Now I am not sure if I can look at his next video without making my best seriouscat face making stern nods with every point I agree with! *nods deeply* I must practice.

I would just like to clarify. I watch Zero Punctuation's video. But I just can't take him seriously as a reviewer. Zero Punctuation as a reviewer taken seriously... That's kind of like me looking for the most negative comedian I could find and asking him to write some jokes based upon trolling a games every little detail as much as possible.

I have to look at it, if looking at it seriously, from the stance of someone who would look at his reviews as an everyday Joe looking for word on a game I am interested in. If that was the case with ZP, I probably wouldn't be much of a gamer at all. Most of the reviews end up mediocre as far as quality goes, with almost the entire thing being "Yeah this is good, but most of it sucks".

I just gotta face it. If I took the man seriously, he'd just be a forum troll with funny videos. It's the fact, or what I thought was, that he is not an actual reviewer, but something of a comedian, that got me to actually watch his videos and laugh at the flaws of an imperfect game. If I took him seriously as a reviewer... Well... That's just slap all the funny right out of me =(

So i'm not going to pick up GTA4 because ... I don't want to? I can't see myself justifying 60 dollars on a game that ill play for 30 mins killing people running them over with cars and then getting bored and turning it off. I just can't get into it I just don't see the fun in it. I mean i can see why people would be picking it up but it's not the game for me. The only reason why i would buy the game is so i don't feel left out by the whole gaming community and when my friends talk about how gawdly the game is. basically i think it's all hype and last time i listened to that i bought assassin's creed(btw worst fucking game ever)

I'm afraid I'm with Jonathan on this one.

While I'm sure this game will be solid, I find it extremely difficult to get excited about. It seems like every other game that comes out these days is "open-world"/"sandbox," drawing heavily on the same gameplay formula that has driven the GTA franchise since its 2D, top-down days.

Now this adherence to a tried-and-(mostly) true formula isn't necessarily a problem in and of itself (sorry Jon, I loved Ocarina of Time). The real problem is that the gameplay formula doesn't really build to anything. Once the novelty of the open world wears thin, you're left with a truly uninspired piece of software that contents itself with the cliche. Rockstar insists that the player recognize just how edgy and over-the-top they truly are, to the point that it becomes insulting (to me, anyway). The game revels in amorality -- which is fine; what better application for technology which allows us to inhabit virtual worlds than to temporarily escape the moral constraints of the real world? At the same time, however, there's something to be said for subtlety. As for parody, the game never comes up for air long enough to make any real comment about the mindless material it imitates.

Plus, is it just me, or do the majority of the missions in previous games in the series range from simply not fun to downright frustrating? It looks like Rockstar has made some considerable tweaks (better combat system) and additions (multiplayer) to this installment, but even so I fear there will still be a gaping hole lurking at the game's core.

@Dennen, I use reviews like ZP's (if available) before I get a game. For reviews, I prefer to read negative comments because I generally know what the game is about, and understand I will enjoy certain parts of it, but the negatives are what makes me turn a game off, and never put it back in the drive. Therefore I personally prefer someone to be very open about what they disliked about the game. Often I'll specifically read the reviews that rated the game the worst to see what it was that killed the experience for the reviewer, because if I hate that too, I know I'll hate the game.

Maybe I'm just a cynical gamer. Am I the only one who does this??

As for GTA4, initially I thought I was very tired of the series post SA, but my interest has definitely stepped up hearing that the bits I disliked seemed to be remedied.

I'm still 50/50 due to the fact I'll have to import a copy because the country across the ocean has fucked up censorship laws, what a pain in the ass.

if you gave the game another name and said it was by a different developer, would it get the same score? just like Super Mario Galaxy. Without Nostalgia, the game isnt nearly as good. So is the hype for the game clouding people's judgement? or is this really THE game of the last 10 years?

It will be very interesting to see just how well it does, since this is pretty much the only main AAA title that is multiplatform. Sales should be through the roof.
