So it begins: Best Buy lists $399.99 40GB PS3? photo
     PS3

Rumors of a PlayStation 3 price drop have haunted the Internet since, well, the console was first announced. More recently, little birds have been speaking, tweeting about an October 12 "big bang," which some have speculated could be a price drop.

Well, it continues, as the folks over at Engadget have received some Best Buy documents that show a listing for a PlayStation 3 with a 40 GB hard drive at $399.99. As an added bonus, it also appears to ship with the film Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray (which is to be in stores on October 30). The "In stock" date for this mysterious SKU is listed as October 28.

While this looks legit, Engadget does admit that these documents "can still be faked easily enough." But let's get real here -- while this is certainly not an official confirmation, where there's smoke, there's fire.

Who guessed the 40gb correctly? That's pretty impressive, I'd guess they'd add a 120gb and drop the 80gb in the new serial.

Am I mistaken, or is $400 still pretty expensive? We're only talking $100 here from the 80 GB model that comes with a game, too.

NOT ON THE INTERWEBS!

Although, I choose to believe Nick Chester without question, because where there's Nick, there's fire.

@Nick Chester: Last time I checked the 80gb was $599, that's $200.

Price was always a factor for me, and this is getting it closer to worth it... but if I was gonna buy a console to accent my PC and Wii, it'd have to be a 360.

PS3 still has next to no games, and by the time it gets all those "AAA" titles, it'll be another $100 cheaper... which is when I'll buy it.

Still too expensive for what it offers, might become interesting this time next year though. No way am I getting any offer that includes Spider-Man 3.

$399 expensive? It's $100 more than the Wii.................

Your mistaken Chester-4 benjamins for a blu ray player is sick when most stand alones start at 5 bills. Plus you get a 35 dollar bluray of S3 and a hot system with tons of hot games coming out in the next few months. If youre into next gen entertainment and gaming its the future proof way to go! For fifty more bucks than the premium model you get a ton more!

@GamesRonlyGames, true about the Blu-ray, but most people here would rather have it for it's games, which admittedly there aren't that many in comparison to the 360. Makes sense though when the 360 has been out a year longer. Then again, MS rushed their hardware and have a high failure rate because of it (RRoD).

Regardless, I believe this will go over extremely well this Holiday shopping season in the US. And, in return, there will be a lot more n00bs to pwn with my tank on WarCawks. I'm looking forward to it immensely.

Where is the Dual Shock 3 though?

@bhive01, true enough people want to play games-and they will-Ratchet n Clank, Haze, Uncharted Drakes, Gran Turismo Prologue, to name a few plus warhawk, heavenly sword, and all the third party stuff coming out on both systems-plus an immediate 50 cheaper as there is no online charges. PSN has a long way to go but the bare bones of just playing online work great when all is said and done and its free. I just bought a plasma and though most havent yet-most will in a year or so and the ps3 owners will already have one of the best players with monthly firmware updates to save the few hundred the xboxers will have to shell out if they want it. You also have to consider 50 more bucks than the premium gets you built in wifi-dual shock will come in 6 months-no big deal to trade in on those. Speaking from one who owns both systems the ps3 lags in games true, but its a much more solid, reliable ,a nd SOPHISTICATED system than the 360-anyday of the week-so now that the software is being solved its really just hatred or xbox allegiance to deny the superior future proof value of the ps3.

@GamesRonlyGames, I understand your logic, but be careful round these parts. Words like that get you labeled a fanboy.

What plasma did you get? I got that newish Panny 1080p set a few months ago 42PZ700u. It's sweet, but when it's dark in a game it can actually be almost... too dark. I can hardly race in Motorstorm on the Dusk or morning setting when there is a track with high walls to block out the sun. Life-like? Yes. Good for a game? Maybe...

Mother of christ.

I propose a legislation: Any user using the term "future-proof" be immedeatly banned. It means nothing. If you think 4 or 5 years down the road when the next wave on consoles hits, sony is going to stay with the ps3 until the next-next-next gen, youre looney. Yes, the ps3 has some neat features and nice technology (blu-ray if youre into that kind of thing) but for the love of god, the term future-proof is ignorant fanboy verbal diarehea (however you fucking spell it).

Have a good day.

Wtf mix, $399 is not $100 more expensive than a $250 Wii, what do they teach you kids these days? Although it's a nice trend to compare two systems that have maybe 2 games to offer right now :P

I'll think about it WHEN there is a need for bluray (probably never) and WHEN there are games out.

Hmm. I'm looking to get a signing bonus for my job. This may have to be my big purchase to reward myself. Although, travelling Europe would be sweet, too, albeit much more expensive... but still... hmm. Oh well, I will get it in time. I'll wait until there are a good number of titles out beyond R&C, Drake's, and UT3.

Looks like the end of this month for the 40GB version to come out XeroxMe. But, I got mine used off of Ebay for 380 with a game about 3 months ago. I've seen them on Craigslist for about 400 with two games and two controllers before as well. Look around for a used one if you're really interested in one now.
skullivan's Avatar

$400 is not bad at all depending on whether you are interested in Blu-ray or not. If you have no interest in Blu-ray (i.e. you don't have an HDTV) $400 is still a lot to pay for a game system that doesn't really have (m)any worthwhile games and a bleak outlook for most of the next year (aside from multiplatform stuff that'll be better on 360 anyway).

The thing is only going to get cheaper and cheaper the more desperate Sony gets though, so by the time games like FFXIII hit you could probably snag one for around $300.

it's funny, that if people actually still sold 40gb notebook hard drives (what the ps3 uses) they'd probably be more expensive than a 80gb.

Seems like with notebooks using 160gb hds predominantly now that the 160 and 250gb hard drives would be more accessible (cost wise) than the 40/80gb drives.

Maybe there's a surplus of 40gig drives out there that sony caught a sweet deal on.

Oh, well, I figure once the PS3 hits $275, i'll buy.

Sony will own the market with the price drop.

Little big planet, unreal 3, haze, drakes uncharted, heavenly sword, killzone 2, metal gear solid and final fantasy will burry the 360 forever.

And the wii will look like a dated toy.. blue ray for all to boot! lets not forget that they are adding back ruble to the controller that is simply the best, and has been for ages now!

$399 is a much tastier price point. That's iPhone territory. But by bundling the console with a movie instead of a game, they will be sending the same mixed message that Square Enix has criticized them for.

True, movies are cheaper pack-ins. But still, if Sony is taking a substantial loss on the hardware, wouldn't it be better to attract gamers who will almost certainly also buy Blu-Ray movies than to attract movie watchers who may or may not buy games?

I here ya-Iam a fanboy of games and of next gen electronics so I cannot understand all the impatience towards the ps3. I sprung for the th50pz700u 1080p panny- Consumer Reports named it and the 42 as the best flat panel they have ever reviewed. Adjust your settings to vivid and hike up the pict and brightness-that should help. The picture quality is very accurate and not over saturated like the super bright lcds. Play on and enjoy your games, tube and all-Iam gonan pick up silver surfer on bluray tonite!

I hear the 3rd one has bubble shields and throwable gravlifts-Its completely different...I cant wait for Halo 4. Did I mention Rocky XII is coming out soon in 2010 along with Halo 7-that one has electric frisbees you can throw. Its completely different. Rocky XII has a bubble shield-its called his belly...."

@DGX Goggles: Ever hear of a game called Warhawk? Or, I dunno, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction? Or, perhaps, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Rock Band (wireless guitar on PS3 only, at least at the beginning), Haze, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, or Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune? If you can come out and legitimately say that none of those games (all of which will be out by next spring) interest you, then fine, but you would have to be quite a niche gamer for that to be true. Yeah, yeah, Halo 3 is great, we get it...but there are other games out there.

Maybe I will find a way to get enough money to buy an PSTriple.
even if it will most likely be the wifi-less one.

I like how it quickly turned into a flame war, and how quickly people are saying teh Halos are the same, or how teh PSTriples have two good games only.

@wugganowski
I agree with the future proof thing, as nothing is ever certain, however i think it would be a stupid idea for either Sony or MS to make a new console in the next 5 years. One thing i think is that with each console generation is that the difference in power, graphics and such between generations gets smaller and smaller each generation. The leap between the PS3 and the PS2 is smaller than the leap between PS2 and PS1. additionally, the price of the cosoles have been rising higher and higher. If MS or Sony were to try and release a new console in the next 5 years, we would probably have a console that isn't THAT much more powerful than the previous consoles but at the same time is like $100+ more expensive... it would be something complete not worth buying... Aiming 10 years in the future is the smartest thing that both companies could do... it would allow time for newer technology to develop so that the next coneolse they make will be much better then the current consoles and won't be much more expensive, possibly even cheaper...

Seein as Nintendo kind held back in terms of power, i think they are the only ones who could pull off a worthwhile console in the next 5 years. For Sony and MS who pushed as far as they could, it would be best to hang back and wait.

I feel it in my bones that my Xbox 360 wants to die on me. It happens around every major release, Gears of War, Guitar Hero II, and now Halo 3. This might be a good chance to jump off the Xbox wagon and onto the PS3.
