Snowblind's Lord of the Rings: War in the North announced photo

Warner Bros. Interactive has announced The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, an "epic multiplayer action/RPG" in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. The game's title was revealed last year, when a trademark was unearthed by sneaky Internet spies... nothing gets by us.

War in the North is being developed by Snowblind (Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath), and will feature three player co-op, and is said to "break new ground as a mature RPG video game set in Middle-earth." Obviously, Aragorn's Quest and its baby troll wasn't cutting it.

"This game is the natural evolution of the acclaimed RPG gameplay that Snowblind has consistently delivered over the past years," says studio head and founder Ryan Geithman.

Sounds good to me. As a fan of the dungeon crawling hack and bash Champions games the studio released on the PlayStation 2, this is right up my alley. Can't wait to see more. IGN has the exclusive on the teaser for the time being, so head on over and check it out.

Uhm, BioWare made Baldur's Gate, but Snowblind did do that Dark Alliance console BG game :)

3 player co-op and "multiplayer" hacking and slashing with LOTR things could be fun though. As long as it's not in any way like Conquest, eh?

Hot. Why 3 players though? Seems like an odd number to choose.

I should have been more clear; I updated my post slightly.

As long as the multiplayer isn't restricted to online only, then I am intregued. This is the type of game that I would love to play with a couple friends sitting in the same room, but far too often any multiplayer game on PS3 is restricted to online multi, which isn't as good in my opinion.

I greatly prefer single-player games, but this could be cool too.

this actually sounds good.... I'm liking this new trend in co-op online multiplayer RPG story lines!

I beat both Champions games 5 times each.

I'll get this day one.

Yeah, but I would hesitate to call Snowblinds' games RPGs at all. They had a fantasy setting, but that's pretty much where it ended. I really hope this is more of an actual RPG, but I guess we will see.

Sounds great to me! I actually haven't played Champions of Norrath, but Dark Alliance was a ton of fun. If they can nail the action mechanics, then this is bound to be an excellent co-op action title!
