Snooker finally comes to the Wii in WSC Real 09 photo

Now you may be asking yourself, "What the f*ck is Snooker?" That's a valid question, and the answer is that I have no idea. If I had to guess I'd say it's a knockoff candy bar, although it also kinda sounds like the word this German lady across the street used to yell at me when I was a kid. Whatever it is, it's coming to the Wii.

Google Image Search tells me it's like Pool, only all the balls are red. One has to wonder why they didn't just call it Pool With Red Balls and save us all the trouble, but it's kind of a sport and I'm not Samit, so I'll just keep quiet. Titled WSC Real 09, the game uses the Wiimote as a Pool Snooker cue, and lets you face off against in-game versions of the world's top Snooker players.

I guess if there are people out there playing this professionally, that makes it a real thing. In that case, some of you might know what it is and dig it. If that's you, you can check out all the details in the full press release after the jump. If that's not you, the game also features regular Pool, but that's for sissies. Real men play Snooker. Apparently.

Snooker is played on a larger table with smaller pockets and smaller balls and it has more rules than pool. This in general means that it is a lot harder to put spin on the ball (because the balls are smaller and the table bigger so it's harder to control). So compared to pool it is more about hitting the ball at the right pace with little spin while in pool you can win 80% of the games by just putting the right spin on each ball to force your possition onto the next.

rules (short version)
You have to alternate between potting a red ball and a other color, and each ball is worth points (red is 1 and the other colors increase up to 7), when you miss it's the other players turn (just like pool) and at the end the guy with most points win. You have to hit a red ball first if you need to pot a red ball, and you have to hit the colored ball which you want to pot first when you need to pot a color (not red = color). If you miss all balls or pot the wrong color you get penalty points.

and tbh... I really don't see how this will work out with a wii-mote I can't imagine myself being able to control it anywhere near as good as with a real cue. But I hope they prove me wrong ;)

Is this the version of pool that has bumpers on the table?

Not that I care...pool on an actual pool table I like. Pool in video game form...not so much.

It takes a lot of skill to get a decent break in snooker, since the blaze makes the balls run further than you'd think. Speed and position matter so much, in fact, that I declare both English and American versions of pool to be more fun.

Snooker is impossible when you're playing with a friend and you're both drunk, but he's not as drunk as you so he lies about the rules and changes the score and you don't even notice. Damnit.

I love snooker. If you are used to pool, however, it is not so much the speed that will throw you off, but the ball-rejecting rounded corners into the pockets.
