SNK to bring more 2D fighting madness to the PlayStation 2

As far as SNK Playmore is concerned, 2D fighting never dies. The publisher will be releasing two more fighters on the PlayStation 2 this October. Neo Geo Battle Coliseum and The King of Fighters XI will be making their way to the console in the coming weeks.

Neo Geo Battle Coliseum is a two-on-two tag-team fighter, which without a doubt warrants its existence with one of the best plots ever. One man, as the leader of something called "The Warez Conglomerate," vows to put an end to all of Neo Geo's "most powerful warriors." While we didn't really need an explanation as to why characters from Metal Slug, Fatal Fury, King of the Monsters, and other Neo Geo titles were at each other's throats, it's nice to know someone at least was thinking about it.

The King of Fighters XI, of course, is more of what you'd expect from the series -- tons of fighters, and hot 2D character on 2D character action. The game adds some new mechanics like Quick Shift and Saving Shift into the mix, which give players more control when switching between characters. The PlayStation 2 version of the game will also include the pre-requisite exclusive extra characters, bonus stages, and brand-new music.

Neo Geo Battle Coliseum will be available in stores on October 23, but if you're itching for a sprite fight sooner, never fear -- The King of Fighter XI ships on October 4.

I'm all about Battle Coliseum, too. Wishing it had some online functionality, though. I wish everything had online functionality, though.

it never dies cause KoF is the best 2d fighting series. Even though im a Capcom fanboy, KoF is just better overall then SF.

I'm glad a few companies still take the 2D fighting genre seriously. The day 2D fighters die, the industry will have lost one of its most important genres. In the early 90s, 2D fighters brought lots of new people into the gaming fold.

Wait, I thought SCEA wouldn't allow companies to release non-compilation 2D games on the US PS2?

I've always appreciated the KOF games, but I hope to God SNK will create sprites this time around with a higher resolution and more than five frames of animation.

I just came home from a really hard day at work, exhausted and defeated. This news, which is news I've waited over a year for, just revitalized me. I feel as though I could fuck a thousand virgins! And have the patience to not tell them how horrible they are in bed! DO WANT, etc.!

@deiga
KOFXI was developed on a non-neogeo arcade board, I believe nearly everyone has new sprites. I can't wait to see what they do with XII.

I'm actually quite surprised that we Brits have had these games for quite some time now, unfortunately as i tend to buy games so often i haven't got round to having a decent shot of them yet, i put on Battle Coliseum for about 10 minutes and because i have a habit of not playing the games i have actually bought the same games twice, i did it with KOF Neo Wave and Samurai Aces luckily i was able to return Samurai Aces 2D fighters and Shmups are the future and a Game a would love to see on the Wii VC would be Thunder Force 3 on the Megadrive (Genesis).

They really should release them together as one package considering the amount of time we had to wait for them.
