Snake Eater 3DS demo drops this week photo

We were aware that a Snake Eater 3D demo would hit "at a later date" at some point in 2012, but it turns out that date is this Thursday, according to Nintendo. The demo will accompany the weekly store update, and there are no early reports of the "30 maximum use" restrictions, so we'll have to wait and see on that.

As a Metal Gear collector, I will be buying the 3DS iteration, but I'm not super excited about it. I don't expect it to be one giant leap for Metal fans, but at the very least, it'll be a portable version of one of the best stealth games of all time -- and hopefully it'll have a ton of Kerotan-esque 3D Easter eggs. Either way, I've got my Circle Pad waiting, Kojima.

Sweet! THREE demos! Nintendo is blowing the competition away with their digital service.

Har har.....

I'm going to assume it'll be under the 30 use limit. Sounds like that'll be something Nintendo announces a few times then stops talking about "because people should know by now" or something. Can't wait to give this a go though, even if I'm currently waiting out the release of the collection on the Vita.

Awesome, can't wait to download it. Never played a Metal Gear game before(I was a Splinter Cell man, myself). Yes I own Metal Gear Solid 4 but since I haven't played the other games, I don't want to play it and since I don't own a PS1/2 I can't play them. Yes I am in an endless loop.

As someone who still has 28 uses left on his Resident Evil: Revelations demo(played through it once, then once more to show a friend), I'd be fine with 15, or even 5. The only demo I can ever recall playing more than once in all my ~30 years of gaming is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. In the olden days, you knew beforehand if you were going to buy a game or not based on the track record of the publisher coupled with the established franchise, the genre itself or what little media coverage was available at the time. If anything, we need more demos now, of newer games. Publishers are not Nintendo's of the world, they're real companies with real deadlines to meet and real investors to please which keep quality testing to a minimum.

I can only assume that people that consider the first 3 metal gear solids great stealth games have never played any stealth games with controls that aren't shit or decent AI.

@arglactable Or they have a different opinion than you. I personally find MGS3 to be a good mix of stealth and action elements.

The circle pad pro is a great piece of hardware, contrary to popular belief.. sure, it's not great portability-wise, but it has a great 'feel' and it's super - responsive.

It gives me an idea of what it'll be like using a wii-u controller..

It also works great for resident evil revelations, so I'm guessing it will be the same for metal gear..

I've played the Thief series, Tenchu series, Assassin's Creed Series, Hitman series, Splinter Cell series and Deus Ex series; among others.

I still think that Snake Eater is one of the best of the bunch.

Ha that sums up how I feel about this game. It's a great game and it'll be nice to have it portable.

I'm pretty sure this will have the "30 uses limit".
I downloaded the Crush3d demo last night, and that also has the "30 uses limit". Same with Cooking Mama.

"I still think that Snake Eater is one of the best of the bunch."

Eh even as metal gear guy I wouldn't agree with that, as someone else said it's more that metal gear has always had a nice balance between action elements and stealth. You also have to remember to measure games by what they do, not just name "X" game the best of a certain genre simply because you consider it one of your favorites of all time in general (not implying you did that though).

Anyway I'll try it out, hopefully the controls are ok without the circle pad, but nonetheless I already have my pre order from amazon.

Thanks for the comment!

If we're including Subsistence in this conversation, I'd consider Snake Eater one of the best in the genre because it married solid gameplay (CQC, injuries/eating/survival, and Subsistence's Splinter Cell camera) with the staple stealth the series is known for, and put it into a period setting that just worked. As a general rule I'm not a fan of prequels, but the way they handled the initial reveal of the game (tricking you into thinking it was Snake, and not Big Boss) was excellent.

But while the setup was nice, once you sat down to play it, barring everything else that worked well in the game, the interaction/relationship between Naked Snake and The Boss was extremely well done. Supporting characters like Major Zero exceeded my expectations, and the easter eggs came out in full force IMO -- which only added to the enjoyment of the game and the overall package after the first completion. To this day I've yet to see something as clever as The End system-clock boss fight mechanic.

I think other than the initial shock of playing as Raiden in MGS2, Snake Eater is the most polarizing Metal Gear game available. Is it the best in the series? Possibly, if you count the Subsistence version -- even then, I personally don't think so. But it's still what I'd consider one of the "best available" in the action/stealth genre.

I most certainly agree Mag, Snake eater is undeniably one of my favorite games of all time as well, the marriage between cutscene and gameplay was perfect in 3, never did I feel confused and never did I feel like I wasn't playing enough. The easter eggs were indeed incredible, with the codex calls being the star of the show imo.

If we are looking at action/stealth then most certainly snake eater is one of the best, if not thee best, easily beating out all three Deus ex games. But bare stealth, my fav is Thief series, though considering the genre isn't to expansive I guess calling Snake eater one of the best isn't all that far out.

The use limit is beyond stupid. What kind of moron says they only want you looking at their advertising a couple times and no more?

@Tahiri

The kinds of morons (who do exist by the way) who refuse to pay for things and play demos over and over and over.

It doesn't affect most people, and it gets Nintendo some more money if the demo-happy people decide to actually GET the game. I'm sure that's at least a win-win for US, no?

@Tahiri

how many times have you honestly played a demo more than 30 times?

on paper, the limit is silly. but when have you yelled out in anger because you can't play your Mario and Sonic Olympic Games demo for the 31st time?

^This.

People just need reasons to whine, bitch and moan, even if said reasons aren't very good ones.

Anyway, I look forward to this demo. I never did play the PS2 version, but hopefully the controls on 3DS version will suffice. I don't suppose anyone knows whether or not it's compatible with the Circle Pad Pro?

FUCK yeah finally they are people who understand the greatness of the games :P

the amount of easter eggs and unique boss fights is just above and beyond in todays games.

not to mention references from other works of the era(007). perfect balance of cutscenes and gameplay.

i wish MGS4 had the balance of MGS3. still these games are just godlike and anyone who is a big fan of stealth and action games are REQUIRED to get this.

though it's a shame they're not using Subsistence(which adds pretty much 70% content; much more than todays typical DLC)

it's definitely a battle between this and the HD collection on Vita.

but definitely get either one :P
