Snake and Sephiroth Sackboys (over)priced photo

Sony just announced over at the PlayStation.Blog that the first of their "premium" LittleBigPlanet Sackboys, based on Old Snake (from Metal Gear Solid 4) and Sephiroth (from Final Fantasy VII), will cost a whopping $1.99 each. These are just the first of the "premium" Sackboys to become available, with other designs "from our PlayStation family and even some outside the family" to come.

Now it would be one thing if these acks did something that other sacks couldn't do, like stab, or shoot, or realistically shrivel up in cold water, but instead all they have going for them is their resemblance to other videogame characters. As a fan of the Wii's Check Mii Out channel, I'm accustomed to downloading my videogame icon look-a-likes for free. Two bucks is hardly highway robbery, but it just feels bad to be charged for something my instincts tell me should cost nothing.

These "premium" sacks seem even more overpriced when you take into consideration that some other finely crafted sackboys (such as the seasonally available Halloween and spacesuit boys) will be free to download, and the most detailed and hard-to-make looking sacks (such as the frog and the gorilla) will only cost $0.99.

Despite all this bellyaching, I'll likely be buying all of these suckers, because I'm rich  and cool. That doesn't mean that I'm not puzzled by these prices. Any of you care to explain why Sony is doing their LBP DLC this way? Is it simply because... they can?

[Via PlayStation.Blog -- Thanks, Adam!]

i think 1$ would be a more reasonable price. The same goes for capcoms custom megaman 9 ps3 themes which look quite nice but 2$ is too high a price imo.

@ Flay- What you mean is "its called running a shitty business".

Overpricing is the main reason Sony's game division is in the crapper, no?

In this thread: whiners.

If I ever write a blog about anything that costs two dollars, drag me out of my mother's basement, and beat me senseless with my own neckbeard.

Come on. Really? This is blog-worthy?

@BattyAdroit
You need to learn the meaning of the phrase "news-worthy." Destructoid is a gaming news blog. This is news, whether you like it or not.

Also, please save your "whiners" spiel. Complaining about something does not automatically make someone a "whiner." Whining about "whining" kind of does, though...

2.99 .....expensive? So nobody can just stroll through their house and pick up two dollars from a piggy bank or something?

@ Moo- My first experience with DLC was with Mega Man: Powered Up, a game that gave out new skins on a monthly basis for free.

Probably has nothing to do with them really lol, sony just like to overprice things.

Who here believes that Sony can just toss around other people's Intellectual Property for free without repercussion?

That's just stupid of you.

Sony/MM paid for the license. You pay for the content. Thats called business.

Its 2 dollars, 2 friggin dollars. For the love of christ get a job if 2 dollars means this much to you!

Also. I dont care about price... WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO BE AVAILABLE?!

@ Koehler- Then how come we didn't have to pay any extra money to have Snake and Sonic in Smash Bros Brawl?

Just because Sony had to pay Konami and Square-Enix for these sacks, does that really mean that cost needs to be passed on to the player?

I thought these would be free. They are just technically skins not characters right?

Bitching about 2.00 is pretty silly. Saying they owe you something for delaying game is silly. If you don't want it , don't buy it. Paid for a 60.00 game then bitch about 2.00.

wow...just wow.

I'm sure that what we're looking it at is 50% opportunity cost and 50% licensing fees to square/konami. [/quote]

Eeeeeeexactly. $1 to rent the characters out, and $1 to pay for the original license holder's pride.

Now, personally speaking, I wanted to make a Kazuya or Heihachi Sackboy. If that isn't possible, then I'm sure Namco-Bandai will be glad to step into the breach and offer all of their all-time greatest characters, most of which from The Idolm@ster, and all priced at $5 a pop.

Hooray for rapmant and unchecked capitalism!

lol steel squirrel, ITS FREE! Sony got nice for once. I think the sacks are over priced, so i dont buy them, end of...(Though the snake one, maybe..)
The only thing i dont like is the fact that you can only put £5, £10 so on but the things you buy are less, so you buy some thing for £3 say, so you put £5 in, then want something else for £3you have to put in another £5, so you have £4 left in there when you dont want anyhtin else. I understand y, i just think its stupid y cant they make them equal £5, say, maybe, the ps1 games could be $2.50?
