SMT: Persona PSP will come to both PSN and UMD photo

I asked Atlus' Aram Jabbari at E3 this year whether we'd see Persona PSP as a download as well as a full retail release. You have to understand that at the time I was still excited from seeing the PSPgo in person. He gave me some run-around answer that told me that he wasn't sure yet, but I knew it had to be coming to the PlayStation Network as a download as well as a UMD release. It just makes sense.

Atlus now confirms that, come September 22, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona will see a release in both formats. I want a UMD for longevity, but I like the idea of flexibility, and knowing you can have both is great. Those that plan to get a PSPgo can make this their first RPG for the system. The rest? Given that you have a big enough Memory Stick, you can also download this to go UMD-free.

Both will be $39.99, but only the retail one comes with the sweet 2-disc soundtrack.

Look for our preview of Persona PSP soon.

I wonder how the traditional Atlus fan base will react to this. We like to collect shit! Also, the fact that you don't get the OST with this version kinda sucks. Maybe a discount on the game, even though the OST is billed as a bonus?

the problem is that its Atlus. could they be limiting the number of print copies? they always have a low production count anyway so this might not be a good thing. Also, this should be playable on PS3's with a PS2 port on the way since we know those PS2's are selling like gangbusters still.

I don't know, Atlus have been known to partner up with publishers. They did the same for Hellnight by making a deal with Konami years ago. So I don't think it has anything to do with limited print copies.

PSN is going to bring in more sales than UMD anyway. It's just common business sense for Atlus.

The fact that something like this is going digital makes me cry. But I'm very, very glad they didn't cancel a UMD release. I just got back from reserving it.

Retail for sure, not only am I afraid of digital downloads, for full games at least but the retail gets the soundtrack.

Hope this becomes a recurring trend.

I need a physical copy to add to my SMT shelf space above my gaming center. Persona 2, 3, and 4 wouldn't look right without it.
