Smash TV 'will rise again' photo

Let's get the "I'll buy that for a dollar" quote out of the way. Right, now we can get on with the actual story.

Did you know that the classic arcade game Smash TV was in line for a remake? It was going to be a top-down shooter, just like the old days, but given a coat of modern paint with 3D graphics. Original Smash TV programmer Mark Turmell confirmed that the game was in development, but then it "hit the fan" with Midway and the project had to be scrapped.

Fear not, though, Smash TV fans. While Turmell did not state that the new game was still in the works, he voiced confidence that it "will rise again," thanks to Warner Brothers., the company that now owns Midway's soul. WB has the right, the means and, we hope, the desire to do it, so watch this space. Big money and big prizes may be yours to enjoy once again in the near future.

I'd play a new version of this, but not for more than 10 bucks and not if it's just a remake with new graphics.

I'd like some expansion of the concept along with some more new ways to kill people.

Or something like that. Just don't rip me off.

I might pay more than a dollar for it. Though that's just my 50 cents on the subject.

They are going to remake it so every prize/dollar you win in the game, you get in real life. Also, the game costs 1$.

Ooooh.

So how are they going to update the setting? Are they going to set it in 2099 or something?

I consider this a horror game. I'm mortified when the enemies are inches away from me. And I lov- ok, I'm not going to say it.

...a dollar.

...No thanks. I'm fine with the dual stick shooters we've got today.

i just hope its not a rehash with new grfx. i do like me som STV but a srious upgrade could make it fun with replay value.

almost like its hard where you need to buy unlockables in order to make it further in the contest.

things you can spend your winnings on. like more lives, continues, weapons, upgrades, levels, an upgrade to carry more grenades(if they add them) maybe perks like move faster or have more ammo. you can pick weapons to start the levels with(that you purchased to unlock)
maybe some 4 player coop(online or off)

EVO was miles ahead of Spore when it came out 15 years ago. A remake would be terrifying.

If they added new weapons, difficulty settings and different gameplay modes, I'd definitely buy it.

What's probably going to happen instead is improved graphics with the same gameplay.

I was wondering when Midway would bring back Smash TV

remember their terrible remake of Narc that came out a few years ago? that game where the only only selling point was that you could take drugs? (oooooooh how adult and edgy!)

@Jim
i cant believe you used both available quotes in your original post!? that was a little selfish ;)

I personally would love to see a smash TV remake. I played super smash TV a ridiculous amount when i was younger and never did finish it! Solid smash TV shooter with dual stick controls, loads of enemies, 3D gfx, gameshow feel, big money & big prizes!?

Who loves you and who do you love? [come on.. its close enough]

I'd love a good slice of 80s retro futurism with touch of gameshow glitz and dystopian future right now. It'd make a nice change from all the zombies and apocalypses.

Smash TV was the second ever XBLA game I bought, the first one being Geometry Wars (like everyone else). I'd love to see a remake.

Anybody remember The Grid? That should get an XBLA port, too. Good times.
