Smash Bros. won't be developed until Kid Icarus is done photo

Recent rumors have cropped up concerning a game called Smash Bros. Universe for Wii U, sparking all sorts of wild debate online. Series director Masahiro Sakurai has, however, stomped on any Smash Bros. talk, claiming that the series won't move forward at all until Kid Icarus: Uprising is completed.

"I'm currently concentrating on one title, Kid Icarus," he stated. "Until this wraps up, Smash Bros. will not progress. Of course, characters have not been decided at all."

This is not to say that Smash Bros. Universe might not still be a thing. After all, I'm sure Nintendo is at least talking about upcoming Smash Bros. projects, even if development's not been started. Nevertheless, we don't really know anything about the future of the series, and it seems likely we won't be getting any solid details for a while.

Until Smash Bros is done I won't even consider getting a Wii U.

So long as they make it more like Melee. I'm not sure why I didn't like Brawl all that much

@Petto - floaty physics, random tripping, changes to the dodge, roll, recovery system? I have no idea why they felt the need to tweak the system with THOSE changes. Completely slowed character locomotion and the overall pace of action.

I can't honestly understand why Nintendo unveiled the WiiU so early.

I mean, they were so light on games that they had to announce a new Smash Brothers that still, several months later, isn't even in the PLANNING stage of development.

Honestly though, Nintendo announcing a flagship series will continue on their next console is as much a given as death and taxes. It would be far MORE surprising if Nintendo EVER decided to retire ANY of it's series.

Smash Bros. is the only series that ever convinces me to buy a Nintendo console. I never owned one before or without the purchase of a Smash title.

Didn't they pretty much say all of this at E3? I bet a small team of people, are in pre-production with it right now. But the fact that they haven't even started any development yet, means that these two SSB games for Wii U and 3DS, are not coming out until at least 2014. So just like the last one, they announced them way too early, but whatever. At least its something to look forward too and talk about until then, I guess!

WiiU doesn't sound interesting to me at at. I used to say that they should drop out the console game and just make handhelds and games, but since the 3DS is bombing, idk what to say.

Nintendo should just quit now. Whoever decides what to develop is really bad at their job. Urban Champion 3D? Really?

Smash Bros., Mario Kart, a Mario game, and a Zelda game are all needed at any system launch. The end.

If Smash Bros is coming for Wii U, then the system is an instant buy for me. I just hope they decide to develop a version for the 3DS (hell, even port over Melee. I would be fine with that).

Wii U was announced way too early.

But it will still be the best thing I buy in 2012, because I'm not part of Generation Ghetto, and I still have the ability to enjoy life.

This is old news, but the Super Smash Bros Universe leak is quite new so I'll cut you some slack Jim.

Kinda sucks that this game probably won't even come out for another 5 years though, by then the Wii U will have to compete with the next Xbox and PS4 so I can't see that going down well.

You should have made this more about the Universe rumor. I've known about Sakurai's "We haven't started because of Kid Icarus" statements literally weeks after Iwata announced the game.

I'm so over Smash Brothers. The only thing that sadly keeps me looking forward to the title is the fact that Kirby will be in it and Sakurai's nightly blog posts. I can't wait for that Kid Icarus game, though.

If the game takes advantage of the Wii U controller then how the hell am I supposed to play it with my friend and not have a handicap?

It sounded fake anyway. Everyone knows that they're really going to call it Super Smash Bros. 7.

Being that Sakurai has said there will never be a Smash Bros as "hardcore" as melee again, I'm not interested. Melee had depth to explore and allowed total noobs to play (my little sister was killer with Ice Climbers in 4 player matches), Brawl had zero depth whatsoever. I am importing a NTSC version of brawl to play project M on when it comes out, but that will probably be my last Smash Bros experience.

I really hope Nintendo makes Smash Bros. 4 more competitive this time around - faster paced and no tripping is a good place to start. Maybe a better combo system or a second normal attack button would be cool too.

No hope for this. Brawl's gameplay was a mess. And no Gamecube controller ports for WiiUUU? what am I gonna play on? Yuck, none of the answers I come up with sound good.

Regardless, could still be fun, I mean, all the games have been fun, even Brawl. And if anything they can still serve as interesting party games. I guess.

Melee is just too dear to too many people, but unfortunately we'll never get another one.
