Recent rumors have cropped up concerning a game called Smash Bros. Universe for Wii U, sparking all sorts of wild debate online. Series director Masahiro Sakurai has, however, stomped on any Smash Bros. talk, claiming that the series won't move forward at all until Kid Icarus: Uprising is completed.
"I'm currently concentrating on one title, Kid Icarus," he stated. "Until this wraps up, Smash Bros. will not progress. Of course, characters have not been decided at all."
This is not to say that Smash Bros. Universe might not still be a thing. After all, I'm sure Nintendo is at least talking about upcoming Smash Bros. projects, even if development's not been started. Nevertheless, we don't really know anything about the future of the series, and it seems likely we won't be getting any solid details for a while.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I mean, they were so light on games that they had to announce a new Smash Brothers that still, several months later, isn't even in the PLANNING stage of development.
Honestly though, Nintendo announcing a flagship series will continue on their next console is as much a given as death and taxes. It would be far MORE surprising if Nintendo EVER decided to retire ANY of it's series.
Then you missed out on the best console of all time - the SNES.
My condolences.
Smash Bros., Mario Kart, a Mario game, and a Zelda game are all needed at any system launch. The end.
Square-enix should learn from his example.
But it will still be the best thing I buy in 2012, because I'm not part of Generation Ghetto, and I still have the ability to enjoy life.
Kinda sucks that this game probably won't even come out for another 5 years though, by then the Wii U will have to compete with the next Xbox and PS4 so I can't see that going down well.
Regardless, could still be fun, I mean, all the games have been fun, even Brawl. And if anything they can still serve as interesting party games. I guess.
Melee is just too dear to too many people, but unfortunately we'll never get another one.
