Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

The news EVERYONE has been waiting for has finally been revealed today. Smash Bros Brawl will have online multiplayer. There will be two online modes which are With Friends and With Anyone. With the With Friends mode, you can play with the people you've registered to be your friend. In this mode, you can check each other's stats, see if your friend is online and change your icons up. You can also send your friends quick messages using the D-pad as taunts during battles. You just have to create the message before the battle though.

Now here is where Nintendo shows how stupid they still are with their online stance. In With Anyone mode, you can battle with anyone in the world. But you won't be able to see their name, any stats, can't send taunt messages and the most ridiculous part of all this, your battle records will not be recorded at all.

I shouldn't really complain though, the anonymity of With Anyone mode really pales in comparison to how epic this news is. So who else is as giddy as a little school girl now?

"We’re planning a number of services that make use of Wi-Fi, but we’ll reveal them gradually with the other modes. Enjoy."

Hey, MAYBE there's more to it then it is right now. Who knows?

But man do we love bitch about stuff. That's a great hobby we've got these days.

I LOVE the idea or the 'smash with anyone' (lolol I love to smash, smash it all night... ok) its the perfect pick up and play scheme, just to have a random challenge from someone else in the world... and its one of two confirmed modes with more to be announced... man you all act like bitches....

I'm not a Nintendo fanboy and I care about this game being online, my existance proves your theory wrong.

Plus, if you keep on calling the Wii names it will get upset.

I really don't understand why they couldn't do something similar to Mario Strikers Charged. Or at the very least have some kind of option so if you have a really AWESOME match against someone you don't know, you can "friend" up with them for future bouts... but hey, we should all really just be rejoycing at the fact that they've FINALLY announced flippin' online play. And really, I'm quite happy with that alone. Besides, there are always patches that can get rid of the pesky need for friend codes once Nintendo comes to their senses...

First off: Playing with friends = good

Playing with all, now This is a quagmire. I don't want to talk to these fuckers, but I do want stats and at least some way to identify people besides 1P, 2P. The omission of online stats is mind boggling.

From a functional standpoint this is basically randomized AI with lag thrown in.

@Jim

No one is as confident about online as Microsoft, it is much harder than Microsoft make it look. As much as I love Nintendo, they have always had irrational fear about online gaming, it's beacuse they are design purists, this is normally a good thing, but in the case of online where you have to learn to let go and allow people get on with it, being a design purist is a hindrance, designers tend to freak out when they can't fully control aspects of their design.

Nintendo have a case of the over protective designers mind, and by now they really should have learnt to let go with online.

Also, Microsoft are in the envious position where they can charge money for an excellent service, most 360 owners are 16-35 year old males who are willing to pay for the best set up/features, Wii owners are too broad to create a perfect specialist online set up that can justify subscription fees.

So yeah, a step in the right direction by Nintendo, but honestly I don't expect anyone to reach the levels of XBox Live, let's say online gaming is the sea, Microsoft have gills whilst everyone else has is using a snorkel.

If they can't promise lag free random play, I don't want my stats recorded. Simple as that.

This both excites me and scares me. I would enjoy playing this online, but I don't have the kind of connection required. I'd have to wait until I moved before I could get such a thing.

But still, the prospect is interesting, though it takes away from the original magic, that you could banter against those you were playing against, something a simple taunt can lack.

Since when the fuck did not having stats recorded mean you can't have fun playing a game? What the fuck is wrong with all you people? Can nobody ever just enjoy a game for what it is anymore? I played a lot of Perfect Dark and Goldeneye back in the day. Only Perfect Dark kept stats. And even so, I know I spent a LOT more time on Goldeneye, simply because it was a ton of fucking fun.

What is the point of having stats showing you beat up a bunch of random five year olds or grandmas? Even though the friend code shit is annoying as hell, you can still setup your own leagues where stats will be tracked for anyone that matters.

In closing, STFUAJPG!!!

What you good people have to remember is primarily, Nintendo make games. Their experience with online gaming will be done in baby steps, with them learning as they go. Either way its great to see SBB going online at launch, with this and Mario Kart, I now need a Wii badly now.

Don't forget, when Sega began this whole online shebang on consoles with DC, there were hiccups, but the online play got better and was fun. While we are used to headsets and such, you don't really need them for every single game. I wouldn't be surprised if such support came along to Wii later for some games, as its still early in its life anyway.

The friend codes I think will eventually go as Nintendo gain more confidence online. Some upcoming games aren't even using them, so in time Nintendo will see what gamers like and don't like.

Oh yeah, one more thing. If there's something you love or hate about Wii, draw up and submit a poll on Everybody Votes channel. Some gamers might feel the same and Nintendo might be listening too. They'd be dumb if they didn't as that's the best way to get their attention.

I've been saying it since the game was first annouced. I kept getting bashed for it. Well guess what, today Nintendo annouced its online. Don't anyone ever go against me!

Nintendo remind me of that Hall & Oates song. Oh what's it called...oh yeah. 'Out Of Touch' I've been saying this for a while about both Sony & Nintendo. The Japanese are out of the loop when it comes to American gamers and online gaming. While MS has it down to a science.

It's actually pretty insulting on Nintendo's part to assume that online gaming is that shallow and simplistic.(sarcasm) See, we just wanna play online, it doesn't matter with who or if I have no idea who i'm playing against. I don't need to chat. After all, online is online. They just wanna play online (sarcasm) 'rolls eyes' Nintendo is so 13th century.

Too bad the online mode is total shit. No voice support, ladders, stats, hell you cant even see the others players names!

Frankly I'm more pissed off with this news than if they had of just said they weren't implementing it at all.

If anyone here can't tell the difference between a computer controlled opponent and a human one in ANY (there are a few exceptions) fighting game, you are a fucktard and need to go back to the kids table, fairy bread is being served. Random will be fun, lack of stat track is dumb, and the ability to add randoms to your friends would be appreciated.

I agree with zardoz about Nintendo being the ovreprotective parents of the online world, to scared to let their kids walk to the park alone, even though their "kids" are 24 and can do it themselves.

However it is all moot, as everyone on this site who gets the game is going to go nuts and start sharing friend codes, whole sites will be built around smash brothers brawl and friend codes. Extra step where there doesn't need to be? True. But it at least a way around it.

Random friend add would be nice for sure and maybe let us chat and everything the "big boy" systems are doing just make it parentally controllable or something. More importantly is that if this is Nintendo's online baby step they better make a leap before battalion wars comes out because as everyone knows a big aspect of the cop op online teamwork side would be lost with only 4 text to direction messages as opposed to being able to shout in someones ear. **********************************************************************

"Since when the fuck did not having stats recorded mean you can't have fun playing a game? What the fuck is wrong with all you people?" -- Wedge, QFT

The only downside I see to all this is not being able to friend random people. I play XBL all the time, and never use my mic. I listen a lot, but I usually come to hate most of the people I'm playing with.

At least with the lack of quick-taunts on random, I won't have to waste one of my spaces with "14/F/Cali". I can save it for "Fock ewe" or "Also cacks".

Friend Codes do seem overly messed up especially considering their fanbase, tho i suppose random numbers people just wont remember are better for parents than asking why their child is playing with someone called pedobear

Stat tracking i realy done care about, tho its a nice thing to have now and then, DOA4 had some nice non-invasive stats...

Unlike most stat tracking games where it ends up being a bunch of 13 year old american boys comparing internet penis sizes.

However, I still feel smash brothers is a horribly overrated competitive platform game rather than a fighter of any merit.

Right, so long story short.

The good: I won't have retarded 13 year olds bitch at me when I destroy them with Peach.
I won't have retarded 13 year olds disconnect in the middle of a match when I destroy them with Peach, why? Because they won't lose stats.
I can play without restrictions with my smash crew and be guaranteed a certain skill level when I play. I can use friend codes with virtually anyone on smashboards and know they'll be good.

The bad: I won't have a system which matches me up with opponents of my level. I can destroy noobs with Peach all I want, but that doesn't really give me all that satisfaction.
I can't see how good my Peach is approximately in the region, which really does suck since it means that invitational tournaments based on ranking can't happen.
Writing down friend codes is a pain.
I can't add anonymous players who played well.

Personally I think they should add one mode for Wifi, tournament mode. Only type of battles 1v1, everything is recroded. Would have to be 2 sub divisions though, tournament mode items, tournament mode no-items.
