Smash Bros Brawl finally confirmed to be online

     Fighting Games

The news EVERYONE has been waiting for has finally been revealed today. Smash Bros Brawl will have online multiplayer. There will be two online modes which are With Friends and With Anyone. With the With Friends mode, you can play with the people you've registered to be your friend. In this mode, you can check each other's stats, see if your friend is online and change your icons up. You can also send your friends quick messages using the D-pad as taunts during battles. You just have to create the message before the battle though.

Now here is where Nintendo shows how stupid they still are with their online stance. In With Anyone mode, you can battle with anyone in the world. But you won't be able to see their name, any stats, can't send taunt messages and the most ridiculous part of all this, your battle records will not be recorded at all.

I shouldn't really complain though, the anonymity of With Anyone mode really pales in comparison to how epic this news is. So who else is as giddy as a little school girl now?

I wouldn't say it's stupid. It allows for people to be much more easy going about it all. You lose? Meh. Play another round. It's all for fun now, and it won't make people so f*ckin' paranoid about their gamer score.

With Anyone mode sounds kind of stupid. If there's no interactivity or stat keeping, what's the point? You might as well play against the CPU. You won't have any connection issues and you can control the difficulty.

Still, the fact that there's online period is awesome, and I fully expect to see a D-Toid league once the game is released. :-D

I must be old or something, not having to deal with being called a fag from a random 12 year old seems to be a GOOD thing.

@Deiga,

I think the point is to just enjoy playing video games with actual human opponents, and not worry about people quitting the game because they're scared of their record dropping, being called a fag by a 12 year old as Rock mentioned.

It seems to me that the whole thing is the embodiment of STFUAJPG.

yeah, I just started thinking that.

Forget my earlier comment. It's probably a good thing you can't talk to other people in anyone mode.

But the LEAST Nintendo could have done was allow anonymous matches have win/loss stats.

At the VERY LEAST.

I just can't believe how stupid Nintendo is with online multiplayer.

I still don't understand why Nintendo Random Multiplayer has no Stat Tracking. I was disappointed with Star Fox Command the same way. Only one mode had stat tracking.

I mean, the bulk of online is going to be played through random encounters. Sure I know they want to promote the community of friends and family but the truth is I know 4 people with a Wii and the reason I wanted Brawl to be online so badly was because I wanted to compare myself to the world. I never had a chance to go to a Melee tournament and if I did I would probabaly get smashed but that's what I like about the new generation of consoles. I enjoy achievements not for the points, but because it allows me to compare my progress to other people I meet.

Ok, I will know if I mainly win or lose online but it still would be nice to have a record. We all used to sit and compare our stats on melee every now and then on the record pages. Gasping at the hundreds of play hours and such.

nice touch, and I have to disagree with Deiga playing a human is MUCH different than playing against the computer, hell I've been having a blast playing Mario Strikers and theres little info given. Ya know I saw a video showing a kid using an earbud as a microphone, which got me thinking why can't you use the speaker in the Wii remote as a mic too?? that would be great being able to shit talk and call everyone a 12 year old fag RIght??? lol

Surely if they make it 100% that way, then people are going to be close to 100% cock?

I cannot wait for this game. Finally I get a chance to play some damn games online with people from the Dtoid. Now I just have to exchange friends.......... I'll do it later.

And I need a 360 to do voice chat :(

Who's taunt is gonna be "Also, Cocks"?

It is too bad we can't see stats from random players. I get that, under the Friend Code system Nintendo wants to keep questionable content as far away as they can (which explains why player names, taunt messages will not appear). But, why can't we see the stats from random players...?

It makes no sense..

I was worried that we would never see Online Play, so I am excited nevertheless.

I can't believe people are so excited about this. It's Smash Bros Melee with online play. Big fuck deal. You can't communicate with anyone you play with, and you can't keep track of stats, outside of your friends. Meaning, essentially, it's like you're playing against three CPU players.

Fuck, I wouldn't be surprised if you're actually playing against three CPU players, and Nintendo is only claiming you're playing with your friends. There's no way for them to prove it, cause "Nintendo owners don't care about online play" enough for them to justify putting in a decent online component.

You're better off buying Melee and playing it with three friends. If you don't have three friends, kill yourself.

The van needs to be exploding. It is part of the internet hate machine after all.

Srsly though, as happy as I am about online play, I'm surprisingly pissed at Nintendo about the play anyone mode. Sure it's great that I can play anyone at any time, but not getting their names or their stats fucking blows. The big selling point of online in any game is to form a community and play with others. HOW THE HELL CAN A COMMUNITY FORM WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW THE NAMES OF OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY. You're gonna get bored playing with same people (at least I do after several dozen/hundred times) but there is little incentive in playing with others and getting better in the game when you don't even know the names of those that you're playing against
</rant>

Still, good to know I'll be able to play it more often then Melee.

About damn time someone said the truth.

"In With Anyone mode, you can battle with anyone in the world. But you won't be able to see their name, any stats, can't send taunt messages and the most ridiculous part of all this, your battle records will not be recorded at all. Oh and all of the fun is removed."

Fixed.

I already expected online play, and I already expected Nintendo's typical shitty online service, so I could care less. Kind of lame it is taking this long to make a SSBM 1.5. Regardless I will probably buy this since the Wii is still basically a glorified mini-game machine. For the people trying to justify the crappy "With Anyone" mode, thats what unranked matches are for, if you have a non-Nintendo system you should try it sometime, thats the only time you really have fun. I never play ranked unless I want to see how long I can last when the odds are completely against me or if I want to hear a 12 yr old screaming at me for "not pwning those fucking nubs." Oh well, quality online play is something that PCs and consoles made for gamers typically do, so I guess I really shouldn't have been expecting anything from the Wii anyways. Flame if you want, but deep down you know the truth.

At least this is one of the games that you'll actually trade friend codes with people for. I'm sure that after it comes out, everyone at my school will be trading them around, as opposed to say, Mario Kart DS. I think that the friend list is very nice, especially because before you had to call your friend to set up a match.

If there is a way to harness the collective bitchpower of the internet, then consider the energy crisis solved. Here's my contribution:

I'm concerned about the lack of stat-tracking for a different reason: matchmaking. I've only played SSBM a few times, so I'll likely be quickly demolished online when SSBB comes out unless they have a way to pit me against noobs. One-sided matches aren't much fun for anyone.

Of course, there are other aspects of online play yet to be announced (maybe they track but don't display stats, or allow you to select opponent experience level?), so I'll just hang out until I can actually, y'know, play the game.
