Skyrim's main quest can be cleared in around two hours photo

Bethesda game director Todd Howard has previously spoken about the company's internal speedrun competitions it holds for each of its titles. With The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim rapidly approaching, the company has revealed a new champion: Sam Bernstein from QA.

He critical pathed his way to a main quest completion time of 2:16:10, followed ever so closely by Jeff Browne of Bethesda Game Studios with a time of 2:16:30. As impressive as that is, I'm sure someone from the general public will have an even crazier run shortly after Skyrim's release.

For this achievement, Bernstein was rewarded with a trophy and will be getting a pumpkin pie from Howard. Reminds me of the competitions we used to have here. Our doctors tell us never to do those again.

I can hear the cries of "Skyrim's story is only two hours long!!!" already.

I'm sure that's just a general time... seeing as how everything Bethesda puts out is short as fucking hell these days. Brink and Rage were both major disappointments with how short they were.

That's strange the main story is two hours long. This game looks amazing but I'll wait for the game of the year edition.

Pshh, like people play Bethesda games just to speed through the main quest. That's like buying Call of Duty for its single player.

@bodybreak nah man... Besides the fact that it took me an hour and a half to get the tombstones trophy to roll four crosshairs... I beat the game in 8:43 including obsessive compulsive and all the races trophies.

Wonder how many side quests the game has. And I'm guessing they completely skipped all the story bits.

These are people who have beaten the game dozens of times and know every little sequel and glitch. The title is very misleading.

I WILL NOT BUY SKYRIM NOW. A GAME MUST HAVE AT LEAST 5 HOURS OF CONTENT TO BE WORTH IT, AND THIS GAME CLEARLY WILL NOT EVEN HAVE THAT. I BET IT ONLY TAKES 5 HOURS TO GET 100%.

I don't know if you guys remember but Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas' main quest's were also VERY short. It's all the side stuff that usually takes the most time. I wouldn't worry because there will be *tons* of stuff to do that will eat many hours of our lives away.

Total Time Spent Playing:
Oblivion: 1300+ hours
Fallout 3: 1000+ hours
Fallout New Vegas: 500+ hours

The winner also won the competition for Fallout 3, finishing the game in 1 hour 15 minutes, but you don't see much complaining about that. Just saying.

for comparisons sake, when they had this contest for Oblivion, the speedrun time was around 1 hour and 15 minutes. so consider all the time most of you spent on Oblivion and realize that the speedrun for Skyrim was almost twice as long.

If you play a Bethesda game and don't spend 98% of the time ignoring the pleas of your guides to save the world, you're doing it wrong.

In all seriousness, that's not too surprising. Their main quests are always short if you don't do any side stuff.

Keep in mind guys, they also did a speedrun for Oblivion and Fallout 3 and both of those games were finished in just one hour. If anything, this means Skyrim's campaign is twice as long. :P

You can eat a whole pumpkin pie in five minutes if you really push yourself. But why in the world would you do that when you can enjoy having a delicious pie slowly.

It's an analogy. It means that rushing through games is kinda dumb, like rushing through your pie is kinda dumb. Just adding that for those folks that didn't catch on too quick.

People need to realize, it CAN be cleared that quickly, but it's not typical.

These speedruns involve cutting corners, speeding through conversations, and completely ignoring anything that goes on in the nature of the game.

It's always great when people take sarcasm seriously.

On topic, I could do a lot of things in two hours that realistically take me 4, and since I'm either incredibly lazy, or incredibly OCD, the amount of time I spend doing absolutely nothing, or collecting every flower in a given area, will be a 30+ hour experience in it's own right.

You know, it's really hard to tell sarcasm from a typed message. No vocal cues. Caps lock helps, but some people do that because they think it works the same way as yelling.

Keep in mind this is a speed run. An example: The fastest RE4 completion time is like an hour and a half or some crazy shit. However, RE4 took me 25 hours. I took my sweet. Fucking. Time. Bethesda ( if anyone ) knows about content. They will jam conent down your throat. Don't doubt them.

To put this into perspective, when Bethesda did the Oblivion speed run it took them 1 hour 34 minutes or something, and Fallout 3 was 75 minutes.

What takes these guys two hours to "critical path your way to the main quest" (Speed run) Will take use a lot longer. Hell Oblivion and fallout could be finished way faster than this.

Main quests for Bethesda's games really aren't that long, I remember finishing my first playthrough of Fallout 3 fairly quick. I just hope they don't implement the terrible level-scaling from Oblivion for your character.

Also, ONLINE PASS.

Note where I capslock'd and where I didn't.
