Those Skyrim players with 64bit system (in other words, most Skyrim players) no longer need to rely on fan patches to unlock 4GB of beautiful RAM.
Until now, using the Large Address Ware patch was the only way for Skyrim fans to get the most out of their systems. Bethesda's official patch for "4 Gigabyte Tuning" now removes the need for it, and will be essential in getting some of those hot graphical mods running.
Speaking of mods, the official mod tools will be released early next year, with any luck. Then the fun should really begin.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'm playing (crahsing) playing (Crashing) playing (crashing) on PS3 and it still sucks massive balls.
I've heard of many that couldn't run the game/had 1000 crashes unless their game was patched for 4gb.
Same problem here. Use this:

Works great. Go rested bonus. The only problem people had is if Lover's bonus was turned on.

Go into your PS3 restore menu, & restore the file system. It doesn't delete anything, & made my Skyrim crash a lot less. Don't get me wrong, it still crashes, but it isn't every 10 minutes like it used to be. Now it's just the odd crash, & flipbook framerates I have to deal with. It's still sad that I had to do this as my PS3 has been rock solid for years until Skyrim came along.
You never know, one day we might be able to play the game we paid money for properly...without it trying to kill my console.
32 bit Windows does support up to 4GB memory, but that includes your GPU RAM, so the more GPU RAM you have available, the less system RAM you have access to.
Except not exactly. 4GB of RAM is technically recognized by a 32-bit chipset, but operating systems tend to reserve anywhere between 256MB and 1GB of memory for hardware use. So even though your BIOS might report that you have 4GB plugged in, your OS will only show around 3GB-3.75GB available to applications.
Wierd, because I have 4GB in my system, & when I ran 32 bit Vista it (the OS, not the BIOS) reported 3.5GB RAM available, & I have a 512MB HD3870 graphics card (yeah, I know my PC is out of date, but I don't serious game on my PC anymore).
It really is a minority of PC users that have problems. My PC is 3 years old and skyrim has been running fine since day 1. It does admittedly look better and has higher framerates than before thanks to driver updates and mods etc, but it's kinda cool to upgrade performance as you play without spending money.
Not weird, that sounds exactly like what I described, which is to be expected.
@indigit4l
It depends on your hardware setup, because that will determine how much RAM will be reserved by memory-mapped I/O.
And I should have clarified earlier, that with a 64-bit machine, you have far more addressable space, so all 4GB (or more) RAM that you've installed can be freely available for the stuff you bought it for.
What makes 64-bit so awesome is it's memory limit is practically impossible to reach. Hint: It's not "double" 4GB (8GB)
2^32 = 4,294,967,296 bytes = ~4 gigabytes
2^64 = 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 bytes = ~18,000,000,000 gigabytes (18 exabytes)
I'm not referring to anything stated by Microsoft. I'm talking about how computers work.
What about people with 8 or 16?
Windows doesn't use all 4GB's so while you are talking about hypotheticals I'm speaking about real-world.
Also you should fix your website. If you want I can have my guys check out your firewall.
Im curious Jim, is destructoid not covering that issue because it would undermine yer 10/10?
Can I make blanket statements about how the game works perfectly for everyone, then? Seems like that's how the logic typically works, after all.
