Skyrim (officially) patched for 4GB RAM support photo

Those Skyrim players with 64bit system (in other words, most Skyrim players) no longer need to rely on fan patches to unlock 4GB of beautiful RAM.

Until now, using the Large Address Ware patch was the only way for Skyrim fans to get the most out of their systems. Bethesda's official patch for "4 Gigabyte Tuning" now removes the need for it, and will be essential in getting some of those hot graphical mods running.

Speaking of mods, the official mod tools will be released early next year, with any luck. Then the fun should really begin.

Woot! I just beat Skyward Sword so I'll probably be hopping back into Skyrim shortly. That is, probably after I beat Arkham City and the MGS HD collection, but, I will be returning to it and I'm glad to hear about this improvement!

Apparently, the 4GB loader also minimizes the games crashes. Hurray for one less bug!

Yay for PC gamers.

I'm playing (crahsing) playing (Crashing) playing (crashing) on PS3 and it still sucks massive balls.

@Evergreen That was the whole point for a lot of people.

I've heard of many that couldn't run the game/had 1000 crashes unless their game was patched for 4gb.

I just wish they'd fix the broken quests now. I'm stuck as a werewolf with no way to remove it. :(

Nothing to do with 64-bit systems. 32-bit systems can use up to 4 gb, which the patch allows. 64-bit systems can access a lot more, which still would go unused. Great news though, my increase in performance with 4 gb access is subtle but there.

Jajuka, unless you are really pushing to become a vampire that shouldn't negatively affect your game at all.

Same problem here. Use this:

Works great. Go rested bonus. The only problem people had is if Lover's bonus was turned on.

My game still crashed all the time when I had the 4gb loader, but hopefully this offical one works better. @fearzone, I thought 32bit only recognized up to 2 GB

...I'll just add maybe we are both right. Since 32-bit Windows doesn't commonly use more than 2 Gb, it wouldn't make much sense for someone with a 32-bit system to have more than that. But with Large Address Aware, a 32-bit system can access 4 gb, were a 32-bit user to have that in just for those special occasions.

@sexual chocolate.

Go into your PS3 restore menu, & restore the file system. It doesn't delete anything, & made my Skyrim crash a lot less. Don't get me wrong, it still crashes, but it isn't every 10 minutes like it used to be. Now it's just the odd crash, & flipbook framerates I have to deal with. It's still sad that I had to do this as my PS3 has been rock solid for years until Skyrim came along.

You never know, one day we might be able to play the game we paid money for properly...without it trying to kill my console.

32 bit Windows does support up to 4GB memory, but that includes your GPU RAM, so the more GPU RAM you have available, the less system RAM you have access to.

@Fearzone

Except not exactly. 4GB of RAM is technically recognized by a 32-bit chipset, but operating systems tend to reserve anywhere between 256MB and 1GB of memory for hardware use. So even though your BIOS might report that you have 4GB plugged in, your OS will only show around 3GB-3.75GB available to applications.

@flintmech.

Wierd, because I have 4GB in my system, & when I ran 32 bit Vista it (the OS, not the BIOS) reported 3.5GB RAM available, & I have a 512MB HD3870 graphics card (yeah, I know my PC is out of date, but I don't serious game on my PC anymore).

It really is a minority of PC users that have problems. My PC is 3 years old and skyrim has been running fine since day 1. It does admittedly look better and has higher framerates than before thanks to driver updates and mods etc, but it's kinda cool to upgrade performance as you play without spending money.

THANK YOU! Christ, I would have texture dumps after playing for long, extended periods of time. Textures would stop loading and be replaced with "blue plastic" or "seizure inducing yellow".

3.25GB is the max for a 32-bit machine. Not 4GB. Not 3.5GB.

Wait, this was a real bug? That's effin bush league. Seriously, indie studios comprised of a couple dudes in a garage don't run into this sort of crap. When are we going to stop rewarding major developers and publishers for selling us unfinished betas with the hope they get patched later?

@Kaden101

Not weird, that sounds exactly like what I described, which is to be expected.

@indigit4l

It depends on your hardware setup, because that will determine how much RAM will be reserved by memory-mapped I/O.

And I should have clarified earlier, that with a 64-bit machine, you have far more addressable space, so all 4GB (or more) RAM that you've installed can be freely available for the stuff you bought it for.

What makes 64-bit so awesome is it's memory limit is practically impossible to reach. Hint: It's not "double" 4GB (8GB)
2^32 = 4,294,967,296 bytes = ~4 gigabytes
2^64 = 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 bytes = ~18,000,000,000 gigabytes (18 exabytes)

@flintmech: 3.25 is the MAX usable by a Windows 32-bit OS despite what you might have heard or seen Windows report.

@flintmech: What did microsoft state again? I didn't see that. Right, so we're playing Skyrim on a PC hmm? What O/S would that be running on?
Windows doesn't use all 4GB's so while you are talking about hypotheticals I'm speaking about real-world.

Also you should fix your website. If you want I can have my guys check out your firewall.

Im curious Jim, is destructoid not covering that issue because it would undermine yer 10/10?

Hey guys, I've been playing Skyrim on the 360 since release, and I haven't had any major glitches or problems that have prevented me from playing the game as much as I wish.

Can I make blanket statements about how the game works perfectly for everyone, then? Seems like that's how the logic typically works, after all.
