Skyrim lagging to a horrid degree on PS3 photo

Despite many reports claiming that the PS3 was the correct non-PC choice for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (due to better texture rendering) it would appear that a secret problem was waiting in the wings -- crippling lag. Players are reporting that the game is slowing to a crawl for them, and huge save files are pegged as the probable cause.

Once save data reaches a certain size (5-6MB), the game becomes borderline unplayable with quest completion and NPC interaction halting altogether. Official PlayStation Magazine's Tim Clark claims that resetting the PS3 kills the lag, but only for an hour or so. It soon creeps back in.

Hopefully Bethesda can issue a patch to fix this, but I feel sorry for anybody playing offline -- a large demographic that publishers have completely forgotten about. I'd feel sad for anyone who can't get to play the game, because everybody should.

You can read a hearty thread of complaints over at the Bethesda Forums.

Poor fellows complaining about a not working game, on an online forum, without a working internet connection. Must be tough.

People still use a PS3?

In 2011?

Damn. If you're still gaming on a PS3, after all the issues(shit ports, laggy online, PSN instability, PSN's lackluster library, PSN's hacking, PSN as a whole) then you really only have yourself to blame.

The solution is to play the game of the year on a platform that doesn't suck.

I see 360 morons are in here crying because their POS console doesn't have any exclusive games worth playing to keep them entertained. If you're soo poor that you can only afford a shitty, last - gen console with no games, bad graphics and a P2P online service then you deserve to go without games.

When I go for my summer vacation I don't have internet, so for a long part of the year I am part of that offline demographic, despite having working internet for the rest of the time.

Glad I held off buying it, then. After Fallout 3 and New Vegas, I could see it coming really.

Guess that settles my Skyrim/Uncharted 3 dilemma.

Well shit.

I noticed my game save getting unusually big last night. Its at about 3805k.

I figured this game would probably prompt a red ring on my 360, considering Fallout3 "kinda" brought one on a few years back.

Maybe I should just catch up on these tightly designed Nintendo game I convinced myself not to buy :/

True that.
The whole mindset of not have a tight bugtest before releasing the game, that Bethesda shows EVERY SINGLE TIME, is a big problem for all buyers of Bethesda Games. But since they still have a raving following, no matter how badly bugged the games are ( I remember playing New Vegas on the side of those rome guys and that was a horrible broken mess) and get awesome reviews for it and are pre nominated to have the game of the year, who can fault them for not giving a shit?

It's more a case that the longer you play the game in one sitting, the worse the drop in framerate gets. And it's not an hour, more the case that it starts getting a bit ropey above 3 hours. Even quitting to the XMB will solve that problem for another few hours, you don't actually have to reset the PS3. It's as if the game is filling the cache too quickly causing it to lag. The problem with the save files is the same as in any Bethesda game on PS3, as in once the save file gets larger than 5.5 MB's or so, you get a slight increase in controller lag, rather than the framerate issues this is talking about. My save file is close to 8MB now and I'm starting to notice the controller lag a bit.

Not surprising. The same shit happened with the Fallout games.

I refuse to buy anymore games from Bethesda since my horride experience with Fallout 3 GOTY.

That's because you guys haven't played Fallout 3 Game of The Yeard edition! I bought it for the PS3 and it's almost unplayable, my save file it's around 11mb and everytime I try to access one of the DLC areas, it lags so badly that I literally have to wait for the screen to come back after freezes, it's horrible... I wished that bethesda would improve that on Skyrim, but it seems they did not. If after all those years they never fixed the lag on Fallout 3 GOTY, I have no hope they fixing it for the PS3.
Altought I experienced no lag at all so far.

I remember being worried when my game locked up for about 30 seconds when it performed its first autosave and wondered if that was an omen of things to come. This is frightening.

This is the EXACT same problem that New Vegas has. When the auto-save starts getting huge, the game stops in its tracks. You can save, exit, delete the auto-save, then restart and it usually works well for a while after that. Usually.

I cannot believe this is still an issue. Jesus.

I just got the PC version, and completely skipped the console version's this time around. I still stand by my decision as with a quick Google search I've been able to fix most issue's I've run across.

That and the mod to make the world map like Google street view = awesome.

On the 360, my screen has been going black for about a second after about an hour of play. It's not really bothering me right now but I'm worried it could get worse. Anyone else having this issue?

I hope this is fixed before I have a real copy on my hands. I got to play some of it and it lagged on me like no bodies business. It was the worst framerate drop I've ever seen. Thankfully, the game was amazing enough that after I stopped for awhile I went back in without problems. Framerate drops and the game froze on me once. I hope Bethesda is working on this.

The PS3 version of the game is broken. Even outside of the bloated game save issue the game has frequent dips in framerate.

Bethesda have had this issue since Morrowind apparently, you would think they'd be able to avoid this like every other developer...

Nice to see that reviewers didn't care, it's not like they exist to help the consumers make the right choice or anything.

Well this sucks arse. I guess I'll get this on PC then, as the modders are a lot faster getting fixes up than Bethesda is. I feel bad for anyone that's bought this on PS3 - Bethesda should've been beta tested this properly before releasing an unfinished, buggy game.

While some 360 Skyrim owners might be tempted to gloat, I will not. This is a serious issue which affects a large group of players. Shame on you Bethesda for not fixing this issue, which apparently cropped up in other games of yours (Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas). My heart goes out to you PS3 owners.

Almost every review I found was based on the 360 version of the game. Even Destructoid reviewed the 360 version. I'm sure if the PS3 version had been sent as a review copy, these issues would have been noted.
I've been playing on PS3 and only noticed lag after playing about 10 hours straight. I then realized that playing any game for that long probably wasn't the best choice, and grabbed a book. The lag is frustrating, but not a deal breaker for me. I'm still loving the shit out of Skyrim.

I've been considering picking this up soon (after Skyward Sword though) but seeing as I only have a PS3 and a Wii, it looks like I'll be waiting until Bethesda sorts it out. This is a real shame for anyone who bought it on PS3 expecting it to play just as well as the 360 version.

Actually, did any games site review the PS3 version? Surely this should have been noticed sooner, right?

Fernadette is spot on. The vast majority of the time, PR sends you the 360 copy. Even at times, when I've asked for the PS3 version, they've sent a 360 copy - if you don't give them any indication of preference, they send 360.

...? News to me. I just finished the main campaign on my first character (khajiit assassin, 100 sneak) after 40ish hours last night and never had a problem.

Actually take that back, had some lag and choppiness night before last just as I was going to bed, but that was after about 6 hours of straight play, so I didn't think much of it.

Still, unless I'm just somehow fortunate, this "issue" is greatly exaggerated. Starting my second character today... think I'll go caster this time. Destruction and Conjuration, primarily.

You know what? I think I might skip Skyrim, or at least wait until it costs $15, like I did with Oblivion.

This has gotten ridiculous. I love New Vegas to death, but it suffers from the exact same problem, of which there were MILLIONS, that Fallout 3 did. New Vegas won't even exit properly on my PC, I have to stop the process with the task manager. Of course, it crashes every single time I play it, usually multiple times, though I've gotten so used to it that I barely raise an eyebrow anymore. And now, years after the release of Oblivion, they haven't fixed anything for Skyrim? Why not?

I appreciate the immense amount of hours they put into the game. I love games with a lot of content, that create a world where I go "what do I want to do today". But damn it, seriously, fix the foundation of your games before you start programming in the content. Especially if you KNOW exactly what the bugs are from previous releases.

BTW, anyone thinking of starting a new character should consider going the assassin route. I can't recommend it highly enough. Get the 15x backstab damage perk in the Sneak tree and do the Dark Brotherhood quest line ASAP for the double sneak damage gloves. 30x backstab damage! I one-shot giants.

Good daggers are somewhat difficult to come by though, so I'd recommend dabbling in Smithing just enough to get to Elven. A couple of smith-improved, enchanted elven daggers will do you just fine.

I think all of this debate over which Skyrim looks better is silly to the Nth degree. I saw the comparison videos, and the differences were minimal. If you weren't trying to look for them in a comparison video, you'd never know the difference.

I'm playing on 360, and it looks beautiful. People need to shut up and buy the one they want to play it on, and stop worrying about what everyone else wants to do. It's not like it is multiplayer or anything.

I wonder if there is a reason Bethesda's games have so many issues on PS3. It can't just be laziness, can it?
