Skyrim is the first Western game to get Famitsu's 40/40 photo

As if Skyrim's list of achievements needed to be longer, the latest Elder Scrolls has managed to accomplish something previously unseen in this industry -- it's the first Western game to score Famitsu's perfect 40/40 review score.

The game is the first Western RPG to really capture Japanese attention, and Famitsu's score is perfectly reflective of that. It has become the seventeenth game overall to attain the coveted 40/40, joining such Japanese titles as The Ocarina of Time, Vagrant Story, and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

I'll be honest though. This story was just an excuse to post another Cicero header image.

Vagraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant Storrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyy!
I had forgotten about that, I was trying to remember the name weeks ago. Thank you for that Mr. Sterling.
Now, that's a game I'd like to see remade with current gaming technology.
If only we could get an Anniversary Edition the same way Halo CE got one.

Cicero is worth 39/10. All that other dragon bullshit made up the extra point.

Maybe they got tired of dull, repetative turnbased combat with fucking retaded characters and story.

I tend to be disappointed with famitsu's 40/40 games so this is underwhelming news (and yes, I didn't like wind waker. Damn ocean was nothing but filler material)

This game has an actual physics engine in it and not canned death animations! Someone at Famitsu must have been asleep at the helm!

Totally let Cicero live. An amazing game to say the least. Well deserving of the 40/40.

Cicero fails in comparison to Calcemo (Chad's digital doppleganger).

I've only encountered Cicero on the road outside a farm. I dobbed him in to the guard because I figured he had loot in the coffin or murdered somebody. Of course I didn't find out so I guess that was a bad idea.

The game is not that great. It has bugs for sure, the PS3 patch statred a whole new bug where lighting effects now cast a moiré pattern on people and walls. Being teh kind of game nobodye else makes should give it a few points, but the game is not great.

I still have to say it, Morrowind was better. But still, skyrim is one of the best games ever.

Been playing Skyrim nonstop. Surprised this is the first RPG from the west to get their attention. Mass Effect and all those Bioware titles not to mention Fallout 3 and Oblivion. Western RPGs have been dominant over JRPGs for awhile now.

I love Skyrim, my game of the year but you should never put too much stock in Famitsu scores.

People rag on this place and other video game outlets for selling scores or not having journalistic integrity or whatever and almost all the time that is a bunch of shit but not when it comes to Famitsu. You buy a good amount of double page ads from them and you can enjoy yourself a decent score.

@monkeyking1969 the game definitely has glitches, but the good far outweighs the bad. A lot of stuff is getting patched tomorrow for xbox and pc. PS3 already received a patch.

Nice to hear, but which version did they play? (Nevermind, I found on Wikipedia -if it can be trusted- that they played the PS3 version -which makes my thoughts kind of more pertinent.)

Its not that I don't think it deserves it (they do), but I can't help but ignore all those bugs that Famitsu would have normally deducted points for. And yea, I know the bugs aren't limited to one platform, but -I think- they at least vary somewhat, in at least frequency, depending on where your playing it (like the PS3 versions big problem).

The way Famitsu reviews (1-10 point scores, across 4 reviewers, totaled up to 40) I can't imagine that none of them didn't take some issue with the way the game was released.

Jim Sterling, I believe you know what you must do. Next PAX or E3, you must cosplay as Cicero. Failure to do so will bring much dishonor to the Dark Brotherhood, and the Night Mother. Sithis be with you.

The most annoying glitches I've had were not being able to complete some quests. For instance, getting a bounty quest from 2 different cities to kill the same target.
AND PICKING UP QUEST ITEMS BEFORE I GET THE QUEST. OR AFTER I CANNOT COMPLETE THE QUEST. I've got like 15 lbs. of junk taking up inventory space.
And sometimes when I enter an area the quests don't start right and unable to complete. But reloading the auto-save usually fixes it.

When a magazine gives out 40/40's like they're going out of style, it's hard to take said magazine seriously.

They've given out a total of 17 perfect scores in the history of the publication, dating back to 1998.

Moneyhats may be involved.

@Keres

Damn, beat me to it.

Why is everyone so surprised that Japanese people have the potential to like Western games? The game was marketed more than anything I can think of in recent memory, is it so hard to believe that Famitsu got hyped and people might buy it?

Oblivion did alright in Japan too if I recall, there are quite a few Japanese mods for it.

Seriously, you guys need to grow up.

I guess this mean I should buy Skyrim then. I've actually never played a WRPG and have always stuck to JRPGs. It's not that I didn't like WRPG, I just lacked interest. Skyrim looks good though and I'm tired of hearing people talk about it when I don't have it.
