To no real surprise, Electronic Arts has announced that Black Box-developed Skate 3 will ship for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May of 2010.

This time the game has a focus on cooperative play, the game's tag-line "Team Up. Throw Down." Skate 3 takes place in the new city of Port Carverton, where they'll hook up for team-based challenges with other players against rival skate "crews."

“The social and community aspects of the Skate franchise are something we’ve always embraced, but we’ve never done anything to the scale you’re going to see in Skate 3,” said Senior Producer, Jason DeLong in a press release today. “We’re giving gamers a very unique experience by providing them with the tools they need to build their ultimate team or to create a team comprised entirely of their online friends. From there, it’s all about proving yourself – teaming up, and throwing down.”

There's already a pre-order bonus for this sucker, too. Reserve the game now and get a code that unlocks exclusive access to the digital version of the real-world "Black Box Distribution Skate Park," which Jamie Thomas founded in 2000.

When EA's Skate franchise first hit the scene, it was a fresh, unique look at the skating genre. In other words, it was the anti-Tony Hawk Pro Skater, a game which was essentially run into the ground with year-after-year releases. While the quality has been relatively consistent, this would be the third game in the Skate series (not counting the Wii and DS releases) since 2007. I'm just saying is all.

While the Darkslide got me pretty pumped... I agree with a majority of people here that just aren't feeling this right now.

skate. was a refreshing venture into the skating game genre. While 2 was pretty fun, it didn't have the same appeal to me as the original did (that and I wasn't into New San Van that much).

Seeing skate 3 having an 2010 release is pretty disappointing, since that's another step into the same trap the THPS games fell into.

I may just be pessimistic, but Blackbox has some major work if they want this to be as refreshing as the original.

Oh, and can the female created skaters stop looking like dudes and more like Sammy did? Please?

Sweet. I just got back on the skateboard game bandwagon with Skate 2 like a month ago and it was a damn good time.

I did have a list of complaints but the feel was really tight AND fluid. Two words that can rarely describe gameplay simultaneously.

I'm not bummed by them having yearly releases at all. That's just how the market works. Especially for sports titles. In fact I'd be bummed if another Skate didn't happen because I'm not touching THPS again.

I never saw this coming! :O (lol liez)

But seriously Skate was a good game, I still haven't got Skate 2 and if they keep releasing them yearly like this there won't be any point in my getting any game besides Skate 1.

Feel sad they are going to over saturate this series :c. Shame on you EA.. shame..

looks a step down from the visuals of skate2.

don't care. darksides and casper flips are cool with me.

love to see more styles of skating represented then just your standard freestyle fare, but what can you do. hopefully they've got something else big in the bag, rather then a 'we're focused on the community aspect this time'.

either way, i'm a sucker, and will buy this.

Hopefully the new city is better than the one in skate 2.

I didn't even bother to finish Skate 2 which I guess is too bad since I LOVED Skate. I'm not ready for this yet.

Skate is Ea's Tony Hawk. It'll be dragged down to death, a totally retarded board attachment for your console announced, then die sadly into the darkness weeping to itself about kick-flips and grinding.

I hope it isn't TOO online-reliant, to be honest. I haven't gotten the Platinum for this simply because nobody would do the activities I needed to complete my trophy list.

I hope the CAS is more intuitive and they add manual variations. Otherwise, this is a first-day for me. Oh, and please please please, 60fps for PS3.

personally im getting sick and tired of every game these days requiring multiplayer or some form of online crap.MMO this and online community that. what happened to good old story driven single plaer games with NO online anything.
just because its there doesnt mean you have to use it all the time.
take the toilet for instance.

Yeah, I played the first two and didn't see a need for any multiplayer/online whatsoever. It's cool to be able to make custom spots, but owning the spots are next to impossible unless they are brand new.

Dude it's a skateboard game. Is that complaint really relevant here?

I've heard good things about the skate series, but I honestly haven't played any of them. After Tony Hawk's Underground 2, I essentially excused myself from the skateboarding genre.

I'll give it a try one of these days.

yes because skate seems to be moving more towards online play. duh.
also i love skate 1 and 2 got both on day 1. thats why im not happy about this part 3. and i said why i wasnt happy. so yes its relevant.

I still play skate 2 more than any other game I own. Looking forward to this one for the fresh locations, as I've skated everything in the first 2 games a whole lot.

I understand if you don't like the push for online but what story is there in Skate?
fetusmilk's Avatar - Comment posted on 09/15/2009 12:53

yes there is a story for skate .like i said i have both.and i never said skate needed a story. go back and read my statement again maybe you'll understand this time. i was making a generalization of games mostly going into multiplayer only now. nothing geared toward skate.

just because a game is single player doesnt mean it NEEDS a story. take most racing/extreme sports games. the "story" is just a way to set a mood or setting for the reason to play the game.
like the need for speed most wanted etc. it had a story for single player but didnt need one.

if skate started out "your standing on the street and you have 100$ in your pocket to buy a board and become the best skater there ever was." thats still a "story" in a way. even if the rest of the game you didnt talk to anyone or have any cut scenes.

I've been playing Skate lately. I love it. I got it a couple summers ago but have recently rekindled my addiction. Skate 3 could be cool if they really nail the social setting they're going for.

i usually play skate with three pals in person, so all this online jazz doesnt interest me.

i'd certainly like to see off board controls improved, in addition to the thousand plus little glitches one can find in the game. the inclusion of honest to goodness, solid, flatland moves would be wonderful.

overall I've been pretty pleased with the series so far, and even as weird and buggy as skate2 is, i still consider it one of my all time favourite games, with it's strengths far outweighing it's faults. i think all that really needs to be done for me to be happy with skate 3 is a more polished, tight experience.

I still haven't tried out skate 2. It's not that I don't like the series, either, it's just that I think I got burned out on the yearly THPS releases, so grabbing skate 2 so shortly after I had finished skate. wasn't really appealing to me. Maybe I'll just skip the second and check out the third.

Not really, between Skate. and Skate. 2, it was about 15 to 16 months. For this one its about the same time if not a little longer. Either way count me in on this one!

Give it a chance. This is one of my most favorite game series ever, it deserves to be

They need to create a better city this time around though. New San Vanelona was pretty shitty in 2. Doesn't look like they are changing the graphics much, which is a slight disappointment. Just take it to a new city, don't waste space with areas containing nothing to skate, and don't make so many god damn hills in the city. I know it is cool to bomb down the hills at high speeds, but I HATE ending up at the same Lighthouse Skate Park EVERY FUCKING TIME I PLAY. Also... less security guards and fix the issues with the physics involving weird crashes due to the new getting off the board feature.

Bottom line though... make a better fucking city please!

I'm up for this, getting away from San Vanelona should mean things will feel as fresh as the original did with a whole new city to explore.

Really though guys, when you get the basis of your game (the Flickit system) almost perfect the first time where else is there to go?

I played Skate and hated it. I thought it was poorly thought out and over the top with the frustration factor. Skate 2 was an improvement but it felt to me that it was half finished, for example you can get off you board but you can't run up a ramp and seem to fall over when you as much as look at a wall or curb.

There other stuff but i won't go on, i will however say that Skate 3 sounds poor, i won't be purchasing.
