Skate 2 kickflips its way to retail on January 23 photo

Wow, OK. So Skate 2, the sequel to Electronic Arts' genre-reinventing skateboarding title is coming out soon. Like, January 23 soon.

If you can't wait, starting next month, you'll be able to use a web-based Graphics Creator tool at www.skate.ea.com, if you want to get a jump on creating in-game content. Additionally, if you pre-order the game at select retailers (read: GameStop, at the very least), you'll get a code to unlock the "Throwback Pack," which gives access to retro clothing, accessories, and gestures.

Is it me, or did this one just kind of come out of nowhere? I knew it was coming out, but haven't heard much about it save for a few screenshots here and a trailer there. Does EA think that because they don't have a Tony Hawk title to compete with they can just quietly slip it onto the shelves and still have it be successful?

In any case, the first game was pretty incredible considering it was a first jab at a skating title, and I have high hopes for the sequel. From the looks of things, it seems like they're simply building on the solid foundation they built last year, which bodes well.

Seriously, does anyone stay up late at night missing Activision's Tony Hawk games?

Skate 2 Hits Stores January

Satisfy the Skate Craving with the All-New Graphics Creator or Pre-order Now for Exclusive Access to the Throwback Pack

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Black Box, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio (NASDAQ:ERTS) announced today that Skate 2, the sequel to the genre-defining original game will hit retailers in North America on January 21st, 2009 and worldwide on January 23rd, 2009 – making it one of the first must-have games of 2009. Players that can’t wait until January can indulge their irrepressible Skate craving even sooner, with the Graphics Creator, a web-based customization tool launching next month on www.skate.ea.com. For those in North America anxious to shred the streets in blaring style can pre-order now for an exclusive code to unlock the Throwback Pack, a special upgrade pack that includes retro clothing, accessories and gestures.

The Graphics Creator is a web-based application that ups the ante in self-expression. With this tool, gamers have the freedom to create custom graphics for their in-game hats, decks and shirts, infusing their skateboarding experience with an unrivaled level of individuality. The Throwback Pack features a variety of retro stylings including, tie-dye t-shirts, Skate or Die apparel, Robot and ‘Window Shade’ sunglasses, gestures circa the hippie-age and much more!

Skate 2 brings gamers to New San Vanelona, a city that’s been rebuilt after an unspeakable disaster five years ago. Equipped with double the bag of tricks, players are tasked to rebuild their career and revive the skate scene. Now with the ability to get off-board and move objects around, gamers can create their own epic spots and challenges which can then be uploaded, shared and experienced by others around the world.

Skate 2 ups the ante in delivering all the grit, creativity and culture of skateboarding with all-new tricks that allow players to truly skate it their way – on and off the board. Skate 2 is developed by Black Box, a studio of Electronic Arts in Vancouver, British Columbia and will be available on the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system and the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. The game is rated “T” for Teen by the ESRB and is not yet rated by PEGI.

Those that want to skate indoors over the holidays can enjoy Skate It with family and friends on the Wii™ and the Nintendo DS™ available in stores now.

That is soon! Now I know what to do with my birthday money since my birthday is 4 days before that. Hopefully the advanced tricks are easier to do cause doing them in goals that MADE you do specific tricks got pretty frustrating for me. I don't need no special pre-order gear.

Considering I still fool around with the original from time to time, I'll probably pick this up. The move objects around feature sounds interesting.

Too soon! I still haven't finished the first.

And while I don;t miss the Tony Hawk games themselves, I miss the feeling I got when I first started playing them.

January 23rd?

That gives me a bit under two months to get the last online achievement I need for a full thousand points.

But I'm really excited for this title. Ever since the demo for the first one was release, I was instantly addicted to just freeskating around. Day one purchase for me.

Kickflips? BOO! GET OFF THE STAGE!

I am excited about it, but I doubt I'll be done with all of my holiday season games by then. Maybe by March.

the first one was good aside from lack of EA support. i traded it in just because of that very reason. hope they can fix any problems that arise with this one, ( like repetitive online levels).
