Size does matter: Project Gotham Racing 4 is too big for DVD photo

Microsoft took some criticism in the beginning of the Xbox 360's life because of their choice to continue to support the standard DVD format for their game titles. They defended themselves saying that the DVD storage medium was more than enough space for upcoming games with their new compression techniques, but now it seems that the format's limitations have causes a negative effect on one Xbox 360 title.

Bizarre Creation says that the DVD format is too small to fit all of the features they wanted to include in Project Gotham Racing 4. A Bizarre Creation's staff member says:

"You won't see different times of day per city because this involves recreating all the textures again (one for day and one for night). Whilst this wasn't a problem for our dev team, it was a problem fitting all this data onto a single DVD."

A post on Bizarre Creation's forums explains that the fix for this was to create different lighting models for each locale depending on weather. So, in other words, each city will only have one time-of-day setting.

Before you throw out the 'two disc' question, another staffer explains:

"Having the game spread across two discs isn't an option for a number of reasons. Sorting out gameplay both in single and multiplayer where you always have to swap discs around would be difficult, and detrimental to the flow of the game. Also, having two discs puts the price of manufacturing up, and that's one we'd have to discuss with the publisher."

"As it stands, we've got the best of all options. We've got tonnes of cities, the best lighting effects we've ever done, and weather which dramatically changes the look of the cities too. And it all fits on one disc."

@namelessted

like malhavoc, i really think you shouldn't try to argue with the devs... i'm sure they know a lot more about game development than you do. if you only use lighting to change night to day and vice versa, then you end up with two settings that look exactly the same, with just different lighting. however, i'm sure you can really change things by having different textures (such as the comment somebody made WAAAY up about having a las vegas-esque night).

@buckfitches, the x12, x2 etc. doesn't mean a thing unless you're talking about the same format. the x1 speed for BD-ROM is waaay faster than X1 for DVDs.

regarding killzone, different parts of the levels will stream in at different times depending on where you are. just cuz you're in a level doesn't mean it's all going to be loaded. whatever you don't see won't have loaded yet. that's how it worked in resistance as well (if i remember correctly), where each level was nearing a gig or a gig and a half.

@Aequitas Are you sure that 9MB/s isn't the blu-ray's x1 speed?

Fanboy tendencies only come out because people either feel threatened by their choice, or because they feel their choice is doing the actual threatening to others. They're just video games; get over it.

All systems will hhave their pros and cons. 360-only users, you'll be fine without day/night levels in PGR4 knowing that you're getting Halo 3 and other content like Gears of War that the PS3 doesn't have. Be happy.

PS3 users, be content knowing that your system will likely last an extra year or two thanks to shit like blu-ray, and you're also getting cool content like Little Big Planet and Eye of Judgement.

Wii users, be happy knowing that none of the above matters to you, because you're getting Smash Bros, Mario Galaxy, and Metroid 3 all in the same year.

PC users be happy you get (usually) free online multiplayer, access to MMOGs, and mods up your wazoo plus the ability to run shit like Photoshop, Premiere, and properly access the internet as it's intended.

Mac Users, my condolences.

MS fanboys love spinning their xbox 1.5. Sonys system is future proof for a good 5 years. The Bluray move was brilliant. The 360 will last for maybe 2 more years before MS fanboys have to shell out 4 or 5 hundred more dollars to keep up with sony. The BD drive will last the life of Sony's ingenious plan. Its like the tortoise and the hare-ms knew the sony had a monster up their sleeve a few yrs ago so they rushed out their red ring box with mainly last gen technology just to get a 13 month head start on Sony. NOW they are winning the software race but soon the limitations of the hardware will become more apparent as SOny's hardware power is realized and software is multiplied. Sony is now slowly chugging along like the tortoise but in a year or so MS will run out of steam as Sony passes them by with a nice smile-SOny's system will outlast 2 more MS systems in the next 5-7 years. Get ready to spend a lot of money 360 boys. Soon you will realize life exists outside of Master Chief's ass.

I love whenever anyone is bashing PGR for not being able to properly make a game, they're a M$ fanboy. The fact of the matter is that there are ways out there that can accomplish what the developers want on the XBox 360. They chose an easy way out that requires little development time, but lots of disk space.

This isn't to say that DVD was the 'perfect' choice for M$. But as I said before, PGR is not the example that should be put forth. I'll say it once again. If OBLIVION can fit onto 1 disk, PGR should be able to as well.

@Quest, do you have any idea what teh fuck you are talking about? I will admit up front that I like the 360 more than the PS3. But don't get me wrong, i have reasons, it is because the 360 is better. I can say the same fucking this about the PS3 and having to buy the add ons, if you want the PS2 memory card adapter, and the controller adapter, and the wireless adapter (if you bought the original $500 SKU), and the bluray watching remote control, HIGH DEF CABLES THAT DON"T COME WITH A HIGH DEF SYSTEM.

my point is, the PS3 starts off even more expensive than the 360, and if you want to, you can make it even more expensive than $600. I can give you plenty of reasons why I really think that Sony is going to have the smallest market share this generation with teh PS3 and those opinions are mostly unbiased. How many time in the history of games has a $600 system been successful? Sony is losing money on every single PS3 they sell (about $200). At this point, M$ is turning a small profit on each 360 they sell (but then you have to factor in the 33% that red light). The PS2 has sold over 120 million people worldwide. Unless Sony can get the PS3 down to a $200 price point in the next 2 years, then they will never be able to reach the same people. Trust me when I say that most of those 120 million people that bought a PS2 can't afford a $600 PS3, and then add in teh price of an HDTV.

I can go on, but this post is already too long. I didn't even want to get on teh subject of this as it is quite unrelated to the original subject. I just want you to know that I am not just some stupid fanboy, I know what the fuck I am talking about. And as soon as Sony does something good with teh PS3, i will continue to criticize them for it.

Has anyone noticed this one funny tendency? Very often, when a paragraph starts with "360 fanbios" or "pS3 fnaboys," it usually involves another fanboy, about to get on his mighty horse and criticise the other console or corporation, often times not even knowing what they're talking about.

The Playstation 3 is a more powerful console, everyone knows that. Yes, everyone. Some people are just in denial. Yes, maybe in a couple of years, developers will finally unlock the damn thing's potential.

And yes, in two or three years, Microsoft will bring a new console to the table. Why do Sony fanboys treat this as a joke? From a couple of generations now, it's been regular for a new console to come out every 4 to 6 years. By that time the HD format war should be over, whichever technology's on top (right now seems like BRD) will be much cheaper, and MS will have said technology at a lower cost. And they'll probably still have all the developers that jumped ship.

But if Sony keeps climbing, then Microsoft is far from done.

P.S. Why defend corporations that are after nothing more than to please their stockholders? "Microsoft is so nice, they always repair the systems and they have the extended warranty and etc, etc." That's because they need to have any edge they can get over Sony... and with Sony's horrendous PR mishaps, well then good PR is the way to go. As for Sony... hell, I don't even know what their clame to fame with fans is, besides good games on its system... what's the corp done for you?

@thisissami - Quite certain about the 9MB/s figure. According to this page (www.blu-ray.com), a 2x Blu-Ray drive is noted as the minimum to meet the requirement of BD-ROM format movies of 54Mbps data transfer. The actual sustained rate of the 2x drive is 72Mbps. That's megaBITs per second - divide by eight. Nine megabytes per second.
