Sixteen-player multiplay with GTA on home consoles? Yes please photo

Some saucy details have recently come in regarding Rockstar's new-gen sequel to its hailed GTA series, Grand Theft Auto IV. Nabbed from Toronto's PlayStation Holiday Preview Event, these snippets of info should be enough to make any Auto fan's mouth water.

Firstly, Rockstar is currently batting around some ideas for game progression, including opening up all of Liberty City for exploration from the outset. Rather than closing off two thirds of the game world for later unlocking, you could be able to go anywhere you like this time around -- something I would approve of, since it's never fun waiting to break through the convoluted blockades that bar entry to the full map.

The main event, however, is the not-yet-confirmed but sexy prospect of 16-player multiplay, doubling the usual amount of players that console titles allow online. It can't be denied that scale has always been Rockstar's forte' (outside of gross controversy), and this could provide something seriously sizeable on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

Of course, this is not official yet, so don't take anything said as gospel. If it does happen, however, GTAIV may very well move higher on my shopping list, and could become an almighty contender in the online realm.

I thought 16 player was pretty much the home console standard set by Halo? Am I wrong?

Maybe zero?

Personally, I prefer having part of the map locked at the beginning, especially with the HUGE map that was San Andreas. If the whole thing is available at the beginning, it takes that much longer to learn your way around ANY particular area, whereas breaking it up allows you to really get a feel for a neighborhood before you're introduced to a new one. Just my two cents on the matter.

Sixteen player multiplayer would be pretty cool. Heck, it might even earn GTAIV a rotation on FNFs.

@Dexter
i agree... but, if they kept the missions in certian areas for long periods of time you could still learn your way around

I only like blocking parts of the city off if it fits within the confines of the story. Vice City did it especially well with the whole hurricane thing. GTA3, not so much.

I'll hafta wait and see I guess, like everyone else.

Oh, and 16-player multiplayer screams gang warfare.

This extra time for them to work on the game could be well spent by them adding in CO-OP play ala Crackdown.

Its probably something for the exclusive GTA V.

After that I'm gonana have to ask do you play games? Resistance does 40 or something crazy.

I just hope they don't half-ass it. Remember, Saint's Row had online multiplayer, too. What they didn't tell you is that it would be confined to relatively small arenas that too little advantage of the big open-world atmosphere of the main game. I would love nothing more than to have an open city for me and my buddies to play a nice game of deathmatch in, but considering how much trouble they've been having with the hardware in the single player game alone, color me skeptical.

about the multiplay, this was hinted at before GTA3 and GTA:VC came out so I wouldn't get your hopes up.
