Six Days in Fallujah announced photo

Konami are bringing today’s conflict in Iraq to consoles and PC at some point next year. The newly announced game, Six Days in Fallujah, is a realistic third-person shooter that doesn’t address the social or political issues of the war -- only the facts according to the real men and women that the developer, Atomic Games, have brought in to tweak and direct the title.

"We're not trying to make social commentary. We're not pro-war. We're not trying to make people feel uncomfortable,” Anthony Crouts, Konami’s the vice president of marketing told The Wall Street Journal. “We just want to bring a compelling entertainment experience. At the end of the day, it's just a game."

Judging purely from the screenshots in the WSJ article, I get the feeling that Six Days in Fallujah may have an approach to action similar to that of Full Spectrum Warrior.

This is going to be a touchy game, isn’t it?

Trying to remove political or social commentary from a game with this is such a bad idea, they're asking for trouble. Although, don't they wish they may have it, it'll probably fuel game sales like nobody's business

Kind of late, considering how Kuma Reality Games has already made Kuma Wars. Kuma Wars was made DURING the Iraq war. It was pretty episodic. Each level is an actual recreation of individual battles in the iraq war. They even created a mission of capturing Saddam almost a day after the REAL hussein was captured in real life. And guess what, the game is very popular in Iraq, how bizzare.

This is featured in the latest issue of Gamepro.

It sounds really good. And the devs said they were actually asked by real Iraq vets to make the game so people could know what it was like.

They said it's more of a survival horror game, not a shooter. Because that is what's like over there, you never know what is waiting for you behind each door. And you don't just run and gun in reality.

This game kinda makes me puke. Let's kill some Iraqi bitches and have fun, doesn't sound like a game you should make.

"It takes place, literally, over a span six days in central Baghdad."

Geography note: Baghdad and Fallujah are two different cities. Perhaps the game is set in Baghdad, but that would be somewhat contradictory to the title.

In any case, I'm interested. Fallujah was said to have been the heaviest urban combat the Marines had seen since the Battle of Hue City in '68.

"Just a game," they say.

How are games supposed to be respected as a medium of expression if the very people behind the industry abide by this stance? We can't just wave the flag of double standard with games as art on one side, and the "it's just a game" line on the other.

This definitely looks like an interesting game. Something I'd definitely keep an eye on. But people behind the scenes need to grow up and realize that video games are statement on their own, whether directly or indirectly, whether they like it or not. The setting of the game is sensitive and relevant, and is the primary reason why I (and I bet many others) would find the game interesting in the first place. The sooner we avoid side stepping these issues, the sooner the industry will mature.

@Let me clarify, it's the battle for central Baghdad.

Well the preview I read said they consulted with actual marines who were in Fallujah. They said the battle of Fallujah itself followed a story arc that was similar to the arc that a video game follows.

And the whole game is detailing 6 days during the battle for Fallujah, so no it doesn't take place in Baghdad.

Damn, thats a ballzy game to make but I'd be even more impressed if they covered any of the social or political issues of the conflict, not necessarily the war. I wonder how factually accurate it will really be.

I mean, will they make any mention of the actions by the Iraqi insurgents leading up to the operation? You know, the contractors that were dragged from their cars, beaten, set on fire and then hung from the bridge crossing the Euphrates?

Will the discovery of death chambers and bomb factories by US forces be covered?

I would think they would have to show the coalition forces (American/Iraqi/British) working in conjunction with each other.

How about the footage of a US Marine shooting an Iraqi who was "playing possum."

I mean, how do you possibly begin to make a game covering this conflict without touching on any of these big issues? It'll be very interesting to see how this is all handled.

Crap, is this a "too soon" moment? Do I have to wait a couple decades so it'll be acceptable killing pixellated Iraqis? Lord knows we waited around 40 years just so we can kill virtual Nazis.

Destructoid commentors are much better at reading than the stupid mouth-spewers from the Joystiq page.

This map illustrates MechaMonkey's comment (I'm embarrassed I didn't notice it myself):

Also, the WSJ doesn't mention anything about Baghdad, I suspect that Joystiq meant central Iraq when they said central Baghdad.

@John Johnson - Right on, I have a couple of professors that would like to kick me in the teeth right now, I'm sure. I was thinking Baghdad the entire time I wrote that post for whatever reason. Again, sorry for the error.

@Emrah - And no, unfortunately white phosphorus was never mentioned.

I sense a crapstorm coming if Konami don't address some serious issues here... someone call Kojima for some musing...oh, maybe not... >_>

just entertainment...so...you chose one of the touchiest battles to use as a back drop. you could've made something up CoD4 style...that probably would've been more entertaining. PR fail.
