Singularity producer thinks demo is vital in packed market photo

Activision is aware that people don’t flock to fresh first-person shooter intellectual properties. An unfortunate truth and a problem for Singularity, a new IP (from Raven Software) set to debut in the fall. Activision has a plan, a pre-emptive attack. In an interview with Develop, the producer for the game said that a demo was a necessity. The idea being that a good demo would win fans in a saturated market.

“The shooter market is saturated, it’s tough to break in right now when there’s a lot of great, well-established franchises,” producer Kekoa Lee-Creel said. “We’re definitely on track to release a demo. That’s absolutely critical,” he continued. “It’s so hard to convey how a game feels, but I have confidence that once we can cross that threshold I think we’re good.”

If you’re not familiar with Singularity, check out these two trailers showing off the game’s gimmick device, the Time Manipulation Device. It’s a gadget that ages enemies and environmental stuff. Sounds a bit stale, but you’ll come around after watching it. We promise.

This is one of those first-person properties whose "gimmick" looks just intriguing enough to warrant investigation. And I absolutely agree with the producer. In this day and age, it's practically negligent to not release a demo of your product prior to release.

Mind you, some publishers could be a little more careful of what, precisely, their demo includes. *coughBionicCommandocough*

I'm glad their planning on releasing a demo for the game as I'm very interested in it! Now let's just hope there's a PC demo, and that more publishers start following in their footsteps!

Personally, I think Bionic Commando's pretty awful Multiplayer demo killed it.

Just my guess.

Demos ARE important. I am actually one of those few people who pirate games for their tutorial level just because they didn't have a demo. When I think of all the things I probably would have bought but the it didn't have a demo and was too long to download and keep my interest I think of a lot of games I might have bought.

Wow, someone finally realizes that the point of a demo is to sell the fucking game, and that only giving demo access to those who preorder is pants-on-head retarded.

Well said Mr. Producer. Demos are an obvious marketing tool, unless you have something to hide. And demos as a bonus for preordering is completely idiotic.

I have bought more games than not because of a good demo, like who buys a car/bike/tv....etc before test driving it?

I love the easy acces we have to demos when compared to waiting for them in the mail from PS Underground or buying the bulk pack of demo's...lol

Demos are very important. The Bionic Commando demo was broken at first, then sucked (for me anyway) once it worked. On the other hand Red Faction released a single player demo showing off the games strengths and getting a lot of attention. Then they released a multiplayer demo, that actually worked, and was a lot of fun.

Guess who got my $$$?

Also, inFamous.

Like the poster above, I can't fathom a company taking the time to make a demo and then only offering it to people who are ALREADY GOING TO BUY THE GAME!!

Although I DO think a demo is a fine line to dance. A good game demo will elicit many more purchases, but a bad game getting a demo could steer more people from buying it than would have originally.

To combat this, I suggest that companies only make GOOD games. Radical, I know, but it just might work.
