Silverlight coming to Xbox Live, bringing crapload of ads photo

We may pay Microsoft a fee for the honor of using its online gaming service, but that doesn't free us from having to look at a load of advertisements. Microsoft is aiming to make commercials on the Xbox 360 even more blatant, by bringing its Silverlight software to the system.

According to MS' Sean Alexander, companies will be able to run ad campaigns that simultaneously spread across computers, television screens and mobile phones. Basically, we can drown in adverts thanks to Microsoft, while the platform holder sits back and becomes a money magnet.

"Silverlight-powered media on Xbox will have the same appearance as ads seen on a web browser," says Alexander.

Truly exciting stuff ... for people who aren't us. We gamers who contribute millions of dollars to Microsoft every year are left wondering what, exactly, we need to pay for if the company is already making mad bank on ads. Of course, the answer is that we're paying for nothing, but we'll need to keep doing it in order to play The Halo. I bet we'll be forced to download the thing, which is of no benefit to us, onto our systems as well.

If we end up with that Smiley advert where the girl shouts "HELLO-OOOO" really loud, I am canceling my subscription.

As long as the advertisements aren't invasive and just are harmless banner ads that won't jump out and clog your screen, then I don't mind.

Yeah. This is something that has to potential to drive away customers. I will have to see how it plays out exactly but I might just switch to PSN if this is to gay. Retardosoft.

They remove this bullshit with the NXE update, give us a better looking dashboard with less clutter, and now they're going to fuck the aesthetics (and load speed, I'm sure) with ads again?

Such bullshit. There are already ads in the spotlight sections for 7-11, McD's, etc. Why do we need to install a fucking silverlight plug-in for more fucking ads?

If there are ads in it, why the fuck would I pay $50 a year for it?
Maybe I'll be buying a PS3 instead after all...

It doesn't say anything about who will get ads or where they will be, just that it's possible. Maybe, and I can believe I will be wrong, it's for silver only. Who knows? Mountains and molehills.

I wouldn't be surprised if PSN goes to this model eventually too. With more and more people having access to TIVO and DVR's, the usual advertising model of TV ads are being skipped over more and more often. Advertisers will naturally look to other models and this actually seems to be a good one from their viewpoint.

I would hope that Xbox Gold members who pay for online service don't have to be subjected to this (though they are a natural target as their Xbox systems are more likely to be continually internet connected)and I guess this would provide a chance for something that I'm sure Sony has always wanted to do... pay for online service (with no ads) or continue with ad-supported free service. Though in all reality, those of us that actually pay for the privilege of buying the Qore magazine have to put up with ads, so who knows.

I just hope that any advertising is very discreet and unobtrusive.

Is this the same crap as on the web whereby you acidentally hover your cursor over an ad only to have your screen covered in shitty aforementioned ad. Resulting in having to search for the X for 20 mins just to get rid of it?

I don't care that something has ads, I hate that it slows down my shit! The dashboard is slow enough now as it is, it locks up for 10 seconds about half the time when I access the guide already damn it! Bring back the blades, I never had this issue until the NXE.

Why doesn't Microsoft just put a proper web browser on the 360, and get it over with. Why do we need all these stupid "channels" of things that we could easily get with a web browser, like the Wii, and PS3 already has!

hahah..

realy makes that free psn look good eh? hopefully sony will NOT go this route. could possibly sway some x360 users over.

but then again the ps3 is just too expensive; maybe sony can offer an ad-based PS3 system. you get a ps3 for $100 but have to endure endless banner adds on the XMB :P

It's too bad the PSN model sucks for content providers.

God dammit MSoft, stop making it so hard to call you the better of the three. EVERY OTHER DAY YOU ADD SOME REASON TO LIKE YOU LESS.

theStripe, too bad the only thing the psn advertises are when you go into the store, and those are just for games and movies. if that sucks for "content" providers than sign me up. oh wait, i already am. what content is being provided btw? just an add for foot locker or an actually application that the 360 can use? ms business plan benefits only them, providers pay ms to have ads, you pay ms to have ads and play online.

FUCK. Well, unlike web browsers, we don't have adblockers to stop this BS.

I blame it on 1v100.

That sounds shady beyond belief.

If Sony put some ads on their online service I'd understand, but part of the whole point of PAYING for a service is to REMOVE ads.

Thousands of websites do it every day.

hurp durp.

You pay for cable TV. There is a shit ton of commercials on TV. No one seems to complain about that.

Anyway, they will give you the normal PR line "Ads on the NXE will produce revenue for more content for Live subscribers" Which is bullshit. But that's the c.y.a. explanation.
