Silicon Knights intends to finish Too Human trilogy photo

The saga of Too Human, Silicon Knights' Norse-mythology-meets-sci-fi RPG which spent ten years in development hell only to receive a cool reception upon release, may not be over. In a recent interview with IndustryGamers, CEO Denis Dyack has stated that Silicon Knights, "intend to finish the trilogy but no comment beyond that."

Which isn't entirely true, because he also mentions the "very public litigation" surrounding the title. That would likely be referring to the suit Silicon Knights brought against Epic Games in 2007, claiming that Epic failed to provide support for the Unreal Engine which caused delays in the development of Too Human. That trial is currently awaiting a federal jury.

Oh lovely. To quote Yahtzee, they're making this instead of making Eternal Darkness 2 "possibly out of a crippling fear of money and success".

Would love to see a upgraded next game in this series myself. Lot of potential.

Okay, fine SK. Just sell the rights to Eternal Darkness before you do, or make the game yourself. THIS DECISION WILL MAKE YOU BANKRUPT

Do they like losing money?

I remember being so excited for this, due to my love for Norse mythology, then playing the demo, and feeling reserved, then playing the game, and feeling cheated. The only other game to really match my feeling of disappointment was Fable 1.

Epic should have lived up to the agreement in their contract. They'll settle out of court if Epic throw enough money at it. If not they'll probably end up making Too Human for them lol

I don't know what it is with Dyak, I mean he has actually a quiet repectable idea of running a bussiness, like looking at the social issues and its better to have employees then to outsource everything because a company has a social responsibility. But why is he so stuck on a game that didn't sell? Maybe he doesn't take the "social responsibility" very serious, because if he fails again and his company went bankrupt what would happen to his employees? Maybe he is just talk after all...

WHY? WHY CAN'T WE HAVE A GOOD GAME INSTEAD? I loved Eternal Darkness so so much. I don't know what went wrong with the studio after that.

Game was one of my most bitter disappointments of gaming, and ended up tarnishing my high opinion of SK. Personally I'd hope they'd move on.

It didn't spend "10 years in development hell" the game concept was simply branded around for that amount of time; the actual game itself took I beleive 3 years to develop.

As for this news - good. I enjoyed the first game, for all its flaws it had an interesting setting and was a fun, if mindless, hack and slash affair.

the first game was really good title with great ideas and lots of potential, but had way too many flaws and felt rushed. if they will be making the sequel they need to:
cut dying animation down(or throw it away completely/let us skip it),
imrpove controls and animations cause the original felt like thee're was a lot of missing animations,
throw away entire enemy level scaling - cause it was broken and frustraiting,
have better level designers(environments were boring and bland for me),

do this and you have gold.

The first game was awful. From the numerous idiotic design choices, to the laughabley bad story, to innumerable other problems. And going on with the series after having that poor of a first effort smacks of the series being someone's vanity project, likely someone in a high position at Silicon Knights. And if the series is allowed to continue on, sucking up time and money to create and resulting in just as awful an experience as the previous title, then it's going to drag the company beneath the waves.

I'm with the "Where the fuck is more Eternal Darkness" crowd.

I get that Too Human is Dyack's baby, but between a choice of more Too Human or Eternal Darkness, it's a no brainer that Eternal Darkness is the way to go. I know Eternal Darkness didn't quite find enough of an audience to be wildly profitable, but seeing if that audience can be found would be a better bet than trying to fix the labyrinth of problems around Too Human and hoping that that game can find an audience.

How many more Too Humans can Silicon Knights survive?

It's Denis Dyack's pet project, so... Unless he's willing to give up on his pet project when he's in a position to make the game he wants to make, I doubt he'll give up on it.

Oh man - Dyack has gone off the deep end if he thinks there's a future for the Too Human series. Not only will there never been a Too Human...Two? But if Dyack insists on making it, he will never make another major game again.

I dunno. Seems a little... pointless. I appreciate that the guy wants to keep his vision alive - I know I would if it was my original IP - but Too Human seemed to be, well, pretty sloppy in its delivery. But hey, that's what I said about Section 8, and then I bought Prejudice two days ago... although they went from charging $60 to $15. Food for thought, Mr. Dyack.

While norse gods as cyber gunmen playing "Matrix" isn't really my bag, I'd rather see SK making games than tooling around in court, so this is good news. Either the game is good or we have the western Xenosaga on our hands.

And for everyone thinking about Eternal Darkness, if Too Human Too(?) does well then SK can hire more staff and develop multiple projects at once.

I was an of the first. It had issues, obviously, but it was a fun diversion. I actually played through it twice. I was pretty surprised with that. I wasnt expecting anything too great though because everyone hated on it. Maybe that is why I liked it so much.

If they completely scrap the controls and try again, I'm not going to lie, I'll take a look at it. I'm hardly optimistic though.

I intended to finish the first game, but didn't (or honestly, couldn't). I disliked the game so much I took it back after two days, so, yeah. Don't think I'll be investing time or money into the sequels unless there's some really positive changes to how this series (?) plays.

I thought while somewhat bland in places the game was pretty sweet.

Of course I think I picked the easiest class to play with, the dude that does machine guns and doesn't really use swords. I would just mow everyone down before they got close. I'm sure if I picked the sword specialist, I'd be bemoaning the right stick controls.

i hope they do, too human was one of my favorite games from that year. I still have my save file. The story is a cool idea, the game play a little repetitive but it was alot a fun, if they made a few changes to the game play it would be a solid game

I'm always slightly taken back by the negativity towards Too Human.

I'm a mega fan and I'll always admit it had it faults and it took a fair while to get used to the controls but once I got user to it I fell in love with the game.

Too Human tried something a little different and had a cracking story. The fact that so many people gave up on it makes me a little sad.

I've said it for years: Denise Dyack is way too occupied with suing Epic to work on good games. This is a lawsuit he will lose, and he will have made a very powerful enemy in the industry (he sort of has already).

Too Human was so incredibly forgettable and short. It just got worse as you played, punishing you with more and more death animations. I know Silicon Knights can make a much better, more original game/story than that because they have.

Can't we forget it happened and move on?

I'm excited to hear this. Although it played like a mediocre hack 'n slash game, the controls were easy to get into and somewhat intuitive; the setting and mythology was rich and potentially quite vast; and more importantly, they tried something new.

Everyone always bitches about the lack of originality in games, well let me tell you, this game was pretty damn original. While steeped in Norse mythology, it bent it so hard to the sci-fi side it was great.

I personally liked it a lot, even if it didn't play the smoothest at all times (and the camera angles some times made it hard to check out my massive hammer and badass armor). I hope they get around to at least making one sequel eventually, even if that means wrapping up the story earlier than anticipated, it will at least offer closure.

Oh, and fuck that valkyrie.

Please do! I thought Too Human had a TON of potential. If they fix up the analog stick control for melee it could be great, Like the original xbox Jedi Knight games, I loved using the analog sticks to swing your lightsaber, Too Human should stick with that formula.

I never finished the first game because it was just too monotonous. Hopefully they will remedy that as well.

They should make it on a Gamecube sized disc for shits and giggles too!

Back when this was a PS1 game, the concept sounded kind of interesting to me. By the time it was announced for 360 years later, it sounded like a completely different game. The idea of a videogame pet project changing direction so drastically during development just strikes me as odd-- as if Dyack didn't really know what the hell kind of game he wanted to make, but he still REALLY wanted to make it.

Ild rather see SK return to making a Legacy of Kain game if at all possible. Although EIDOS / Square own the rights to LOK Soul Reaver, Silicon Knights have shared ownership of the original LOK IP which broght about LOK 2.

If Square isnt gonna make a new Soul Reaver ild rather Silicon Knights make use of the IP
