Silent Hill: Homecoming screens: I wish I was excited photo

I will forever be grateful to Konami that Silent Hill 2 exists. It is, to me, one of the most stunning experiences of all time -- a dark and depressing game about introspection, obsession and guilt that I don't thing we've quite seen in a videogame before or since.

However, it is that very same gratitude that upsets me with each successive Silent Hill chapter. SH3 was decent, and The Room had some inspired moments, but Konami has never recaptured my imagination. Perhaps SH2's atmosphere and scripting is just too unique to reproduce, or maybe I myself am too demanding. Either way, Silent Hill: Homecoming, stripped of the "5" in its title, has failed to excite me since its announcement, and that is something I find both incomprehensible and very dismaying.

With that rant over, CVG has some new screenshots that still fail to excite, and look a little sub-par really. They resemble Alone in the Dark screens, and I think we can all agree that the last thing Homecoming needs to do is evoke those kinds of memories.

Are any of our Silent Hill fans actually excited or is everyone as pessimissitic as I am? I am trying really hard to be excited, but I just can't. Someone convince me I'm wrong.

I loved SH2, and the rest were awesome, too. Well The Room was kinda meh, but whatever. I don't particularly like the camera in this game, or the copied-from-RE4-over-the-shoulder-aiming fighting system... Other than that, it looks pretty good.

I thought Silent Hill was creepy, then I saw Silent Hill 2. Jim's speech about staring at the knife has convinced me I need to purchase the game. I'll definitely play Silent Hill 2 when I have guests over are over.

Nothing screams "party game" like psychological horror.

SH2 was indeed good, 4 was okay. Have to say I'm not fussed about Homecoming.

I don't think it's much to ask for a little innovation from the series. The gameplay still looks pretty similar to all the other games and let's face it, it could do with a little tweaking. Maybe the story and immersion will be great though, but it's hard to tell from just a few short trailers.

SH3 was bad?

WTF, that game answered many of our lingering questions from Silent Hill 1. If you want to rate the games fine, but in all honesty SH3 was phenomenal. Is SH2 better? I don't know? Depends if you didn't find SH1's main plot to be interesting. In my opinion SH3 was a great game, and a great sequal because it complemented SH1, making it better and adding to overall plot another layer of complexity if not some sophistication.

You lack of love for sh3 is astounding, just another example of why this generation of gamers suck monkey balls.

I was very interested in 5 at first. It looked somewhat promising. Then I started losing interest.

Then they went 'lol pyramid head' and the fanboy in my head reared back in disgust, drool flinging from it's lips and bared fangs, and slammed the door on 5.

Don't mess with Silent Hill 2. You will lose.

The second I learned that Team Silent wasn't developing Homecoming, I dropped it off my radar. Even Akira Yamaoka can't save this one (I'll still buy it though).

One of the things i feel is that Silent Hill 2 was such a huge leap from the first game in terms of graphics, gameplay and story that it had set a bar so in the minds of gamers. Since then, it has definitely been hard for Konami to set such a bar again. Visual the game hasn't seen a huge step in graphics either. I believe that is due to the fact that it's technique of using the grain filter and fog helped to muffle the discrepancies in the previous titles helping to lend to an almost realistic look. So the visual don't really leap out to the normal eye(in my opinion). I think it would have been hot for the series to actually involve the enviorments into gameplay. All the games in the series have had detailed environments, but no kind of interaction with them. Silent Hill Orgins had the right idea with letting pick-up stuff like tv's and whatnot for weapons. So I think they could have took this new version even further with like the Havok engine or something.

SH3 was bad?"

Um ... no? I called it "decent," not bad. People thinking that anything below "amazing" is somehow an insult is just another example of what's wrong with this generation of gamers.

Thank for this exciting, interesting and entertaining comment.

No the problem with this generation is that people give games too much leeway. I dont' have time to play medicore games. Honestly no one should play mediocre games. Why would you pay 60 dollars for game thats just ok? Have people really reduced their expectation of games. Shouldn't the industry be getting better?

I know its off topic, but its noticeable the industry is getting worst. There are more games being made, but less well made games. All the good games get buried under the mediocrity of this generation of games. Doesn't' make it better when the consumers keep digesting mediocre games instead of demanding something better.

I hate everything. If people complain about my thoughts and opinions, good for me. That means people care what you think, feeding that ego.

How would you feel about a Silent Hill: Dynasty Warriors? You play as Pyramid head swinging that big sword around. You can guess what your special ability would be.

What we need is a Silent Hill game that tries to recapture what the original game had, like SH3 tried to do. SH2 had way too much whining on James' part for me to take his character seriously.

We need MOAR Harry. And PS1 block graphics.

I loved every moment of Silent hill 1-3, thought 4 was pretty decent for what it was, despite the repetition.

I don't care about Homecoming. It looks like a piece of crap by a bunch of hacks who don't know what to do with the name other than throw in a bunch of things people recognise as Silent hill into an RE4 clone and call it a day. I lost interest when they started taking their cues from more action flavoured games, that's not Silent Hill to me.

Also, Jim - you don't ever seem to mention the first game, have you played it? My first play through the first game is always my fondest memory of the series.

After watching some new videos of the game and seeing the screenshots from here: http://www.the-magicbox.com/0808/game080824b.shtml

I do indeed look forward to this game.

Timmeh:

I have played Silent Hill, but I played it after SH2, so I admit my opinion is fully colored by that. That and the fact that the PAL version of the game is heavily toned down so I have no yet enjoyed it was it was meant to be played.

I liked it, but I find the story-bubble of James far more enthralling than the main cult plotline.

Im pretty sure Silent Hill 3 was my favorite of the bunch mainly because its the only game ive played through 4 times and it had some of the most uncomfortable dark bleeding hallways ever.

Anyways ive found myself getting a little more excited about the new one after checking out some of the enemy screenshots on ign.

SH 1-3 were all AMAZING games. 3 was not simply "decent", but then I started playing with SH1 first.

@Kinsella: I agree. I'm pretty worn out from Jim's articles. They're usually overdosed on negativity and cynicism, unless it's anything to do with Dynasty Warriors. Perhaps he needs to start his own Dynasty Warriors blog.

Previewed the game at X'08. I thought it held promise. The enhanced graphics only made it creepier. The controls were pretty decent too.

To be burnt out on my articles, you need to have read a lot of them. To think that I'm negative all the time unless it's Dynasty Warriors, you couldn't have read a lot of them.

Though, I think it's because you're talking about politics and crap too much. Which is a very angering/depressing topic.

Even though they are realesed mostly earlier in the UK, are very well written in terms of story and incredibly well appreciated by almost everyone who has played them im yet to play a single SH game. I think its because the SH1 demo in MGS scared me to the pit of my soul. Homecoming although having pyramid head (mabye physical representations of guilt look the same to everyone), will be my first chance.

and Jim, Silent Hill 3 was great, the only one that was only "decent" was 4 (and maybe Origins)

Saying I am negative about anything other than Dynasty Warriors is what's not fair, and rather ignorant.
