Cihi had just the right blend of soft, yet hauntingly inhuman voice acting. You could really feel the uncanny valley-ness in just his voice. The way he would pause and whistle in the middle of words only helped add to his character.
And remember the letter from the ending?
Her VA was actually crying in the sound studio by the end of it!
I thought it was one of the most powerful moments in the whole game, if not the whole series.
And half of Angela's character was her frighteningly bizarre voice. She sounded like a very disturbed 40 year old woman, despite being a teenager.
Laura and Eddie's VAs weren't all that bad, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if they got the boot.
As long as Konami can keep the mood right I'm fine.
What next Konami?....you going to replace David Hayter?....
Truthfully maybe these new voice actors could be better, but every time I've seen them alter something like this it always turns out bad. I'd much rather have the original voice actors just because, even if they weren't good that's part of the experience. Now I'm in an awkward position of not knowing whether I should wait for this collection and give them the benefit of the doubt that the new voice acting will be good, or just go and find some old copies of the originals.
Whoa whoa whoa -wtf-? Do they not pay attention to their community of fans? Silent Hill THE FIRST is the only one people believe to be lacking on the side of voice acting. I've never heard complaints for 2 and 3...wtf, Konami?!
Yeah, I agree that some remasters aren't particularly fantastic compared to the originals. Personally, I think anything that was made for vinyl sounds better on it, but I can see why some people rather like the clean sounding alternatives (and yeah, mono sound is not the all consuming death bringer some make it out to be).
But if there's one thing that is being proven now, it is that6 these HD remakes are really just the original games in HD. Probably not out of respect to the source material, but just because it is cheaper. Why Konami would buck this trend is beyond me.
Out of curiosity, would people see something wrong with adding voice acting to the Team Ico collection? I think if it were the Team Ico games, properties that haven't been ravaged by modern gaming, people would be much more outraged. But because it's Silent Hill, a franchise bitchslapped by mainstream craving bean counting publisher suits, the Silent Hill games have become so irrelevant that no one gives a fuck what they do at this point.
This is being made by money, and it already FEELS like it. You ripped out the vocal performances from the cast? Quality of the voices notwithstanding, you could TELL that the people voicing the characters in SH2 and SH3 were giving it their all.
I can't possibly imagine Mary's letter with a new voice, or James's conversation with Angela on the stairs of fire, or Heather's breakdown when she finds her father, or Douglas's confession of losing his son... Those performances were the very HEART of the franchise, the emotional resonance that made the series BETTER than a juvenile, pointless gore game with cheap shocks and ugly monsters. They were PEOPLE, and they sounded like real human beings, not like professional, overused VAs with voices of gold (Steve Blum, Nolan North, Tara Strong). James was so soft-spoken, so believable and genuine, he MADE the game for many fans, myself included.
Imagine if they recast Orson Welles in Citizen Kane with a younger actor, or Oscar Schindler was recast as Justin Timberlake, or Star Wars digitally replaced its respected cast with CGI and the bland new cast (oh wait, they did that with Darth Vader and Boba Fett. And it was terrible).
This was something that wasn't broken, didn't need fixing, and was genuinely an essential part of the game. I don't believe for one moment that the original Team Silent would accept this, stand by this decision, or allow their game to be altered by upper-management just to weasel out of paying some royalty fees. The cast was just as essential to the game as the rest of the creators involved, from Guy Chihi's troubled VA work to Akira Yamaoka's utter musical and ambient brilliance.
Konami lost a sale from me. And I'm exactly the type of person that is dying to see Silent Hill returned to it prime.
You don't do that by trampling over the originals in a shameful cash-grab.
Seriously Konami? I hope whoever made that decision in your company dies from the Black Plague now.
Assholes, that's just a total dick move and ruins the games completely.
hopefully there's dual audio for MGS and ZOE collection(as an OPTION).
at least make an option to revert to new or old voices.
this is what i fear :(
not to mention why no SH4? can't they also just put Silent Hill Shattered Memories and Silent Hill 1(as a voucher, similar to MGS1 voucher in the HD Collection) that would have been one hell of a collection.
good thing they didn't tampered the music or i will seriously be pissed.
it seems Konami is not tampering any kojima productions game yet games like Silent Hill and Castlevania keep fading on what makes them unique. i wouldn't even want to know what would happen if konami release a new Suikoden in their current state nowadays.
very disappointing konami, might have to pick up the PS2 version(only Silent Hill 2 is missing), but i might still buy the collection just for HD visuals and all.
though since it's Mary Elizabeth is doing the ADR i'll keep an eye on this :P
You people disgust me.
Hahahaha...amazing :D ! I'm all for hearing multiple new seiyū sounding like one person like they all do in every game/tv/film ever! *Two thumbs up!*
Anyway jokes aside, like all whine-fests on EVERY site which is remotely gaming related, people will still buy this, not saying its a lack of willpower or individual opinion, but there is a sheer determination within' a fan-base and its all within good intention, its something that has to be commemorated and which I personally applaud (No, this isn't sarcasm).
I know in situations like this its the morale of it all which matters, but in the end when times change and we become old fuckers, its down to the future generation of kids of which we are resolved in through the generations, so naturally the companies cater for that "natural evolution" to make more money from the new kids....shit its why Lucas remade all Star Wars movies.
At least as fans of whatever you enjoyed, you enjoyed it in its truest form when the original was released. That truest form was when the game etched itself into your memory or created moments which you still remember and inspire you to this day. So no matter what happens, that's what counts and I wouldn't let any rehash or remake tarnish or change that.
If anything though, don't do what Square Enix did. Milk something so bad it fuckin' stinks. At least with Silent Hill its changed far beyond what we recognize it from the late 90s first entry, however its not like they have made 7 million spin offs from one particular game in the series (*cough* Final Fantasy 7).
Anyway I could eat my words. Maybe we'll see 10 billion SH2 spin offs in the next 500 years.
But you would be wrong in saying that you can easily find someone to give a remotely similar performance.
They've become more and more about emulating Hollywood cliches and providing popcorn experiences. Far less ambitious than the goals of the original Team Silent.
What if James ends up being all macho?
It seems perfectly possible to me with the way Konami's been directing the franchise lately.
Its scary.
So wait... First you imply that the voices in the game don't really matter.
Then you say people disgust you for listening to the wrong voice track.
You must be aware that many people don't speak Japanese, so its far easier to relate to the characters when the voices are in English... Therefore many people think its plain stupid pretending that a foreign language makes some sort of sense to them and saying "Gee, This acting sure is great! Cuz' I sure do know how to talk Japanese and I sure can tell that this is a GREAT performance!"
I find it ridiculous that you claim that listening to the right voice-track makes you a "real" fan, while some people are fine with listening to English voices and actually try to deconstruct the themes, symbolism and the game's use of gameplay mechanichs to drive a narrative in new ways.
It's called elitism, Sir/Madam; and THAT disgusts me.
GOOD DAY!
(i am also aware that you probably are exaggerating fanboyism.... BUT STILL!)
sorry but you fail if you think silent hill had japanese voices

so yes the original voices ARE in english. just like the RE games and Devil May Cry games. and yes in other works they have japanese VA like RE Degeneration, DMC Anime. but Silent Hill has always been in english.
i want to see how both sides act in terms of horror silent hill style.
That actually matters very little relative to the point I was making. I was mocking the incredible whining capacity of gamers, even in situations where they have no idea how good or bad the outcome is. It's amusing and exasperating at the same time.
Now off I go to post about how I can never enjoy another DMC game because his hair is different.
I do remember seeing a documentary thing where the American voice actors were doing the mo-cap as well as voice acting, and shit like that...
(I think they might have been doing it at the same time?... I dunno... I'm quite inebriated)
Sacred? In a video game? I suppose my tolerance for that is higher than most. I care about good and bad more than I do about change in general. If the new voice acting is bad, that is the point at which I will be unhappy with Konami.
@Mr Fishus
Please have a beverage for me, as I ran out earlier. I pretty much agree with you about elitism, even though I often like subtitles better than English voice overs. It depends on relative quality, however, not on some sense of purity. It doesn't bother me in the least if another person likes a different version that I. It only bothers me if someone decides they hate something because it's different, or if they haven't yet experienced it.
I'm with the crowd of "if ain't broke don't fix it" but if they can get good voices and end up with the same result I guess it wouldn't be too bad, but I don't think Konami gives a darn about that too much.
I suppose if I extended my buttock and released my flatulence upon someone's face, they shouldn't mind, right? I mean, they haven't experienced it, and it certainly is a change of pace.
Hey, I'll admit it, I'm weak willed creature that fears change, especially on something that I highly regard. However, I'll probably won't hate the new voice acting, but this is a bone-headed decision on Konami's part.
SH 2 and 3 were similiar in that regard.
Count me in the same boat for not purchasing this one. The voice work was perfect for the game despite its flaws. Considering they'll likely want to spend the fewest amount of dollars on a new cast as they could possibly get away with...expect shitty anime-dubbing quality. Because that's all they'll likely want to pay for on a re-release that's not going to sell as much as a brand new game would.
I mean Silent Hill 3 definitely needs it. The new director of voice acting is the VA of Major Kusanagi from GitS. I am totally fine with this.
As for the voice actor swap - well, I'll hold my personal judgement until I hear it. I will say that I thought the monotone, depressed-sounding delivery of the original actor worked surprisingly well. But it's a bit short-sighted to think that no one could possibly do a better job. There are a lot of actors out there.
Also, just applying a tiny bit of critical thinking - the primary target for a reboot would be to draw in NEW FANS, i.e. people that did not already get into the titles when they were originally released. Those people do not care who the original voice actors were, and it is unlikely that this change is relevant to any of these people. You'll find, if you reflect a bit, that the number of people who are original die-hards who definitely wanted to buy this but refuse to on account of the voice-actor shift, is a very, very, very small minority. Take that as you will. It will of course be very sad if the new cast sucks. But there's no way to know that right now.
