Silent Hill: Downpour screens have a hint of Alan Wake photo

While borrowing these screens from VG247, I noticed a comment stating how reminiscent Silent Hill: Downpour is of Alan Wake. It's hardly surprising, considering both have been influenced heavily by Twin Peaks, but once you see it, it almost looks like it was inspired.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Downpour, because I'm a ludicrous loyalist who somehow keeps his hopes up despite not liking a Silent Hill game in many years. I guess I keep holding out hope that Silent Hill 2's lightning will strike twice. I'm naive like that.

Screens look pretty though, right? In a dismal sort of way.

At least the graphics so far look better than Homecomings. I'm still waiting to see the gameplay though.

Damn it, you're the second person to mention Twin Peaks this week and I have not seen it. I suppose I'll hunt it down and watch it. Game screens look good though but I also hope it's better than Alan Wake and the last couple S.H. games.

@mix: Agreed. While I don't think this new Silent Hill will be better than Alan Wake, Tough shoes to fill IMO, this looks more and more promising than the past Silent Hills. But like AllenR said. I would need to see gameplay first.

The whole time I was playing Alan Wake I kept thinking "this is what Silent Hill should be..." Hopefully they'll take some influence from AW and make the Silent Hill I've been waiting since SH2 for...

The shots do look like this new SH will be more atmospheric than Homecoming, but honestly if you hadn't told me these shots were of a Silent Hill game, I wouldn't have known. Used to be you could identify a shot of a Silent Hill game without being told what it was pretty easily.

Fingers crossed, but the landscape that allowed a game like Silent Hill 2 or 3 to exist no longer does. Downpour could be a great game in its own right, but I hope that this isn't that game that definitively proves the Silent Hill name is just that, a name with recognition that gets plastered on a case.

Ah so now there ripping off the visual design of one of the worst horror games of this gen...only thing worse was SH: origins and Homecoming isn't far behind.

I liked Homecoming and loved Shattered Memories. Both were pretty unique/good even if they were different from the other games.
It does sort of Sirenish. Siren Blood Curse is one of the best horror games of this generation, I implore all of you to check it out(psn)

Yeah this is the first time I think SH has seen significant outdoor areas not in a town. I can dig it.

This just doesn't feel very Silent Hill to me.
This fog really seems more like that kind of light, moody fog you'd see in a more realistic environment.
The early games' fog felt as though it was trapping you in, like a dark all-encompassing entity.

Nothing is scarier than what people can imagine for themselves, and this fog just doesn't seem to be hiding any secrets.

Still though, my fingers are crossed.

Doesn't look like Siren or Silent Hill to me. However, it certainly looks like Alan Wake. Everything about it is Alan Wake. Heck, even the wood on the deck is basically identical to the wood on the deck when you meet the sheriff and his dog outside in Alan Wake. The lighting looks the same. Everything.

But that's a good thing!

Awesome point. Maybe the suits don't want their pretty graphics to be obscured by fog.

Alan Wake sucked, was way too easy, and the day time sections broke off the flow of the game. I was hoping it would be Resident Evil 4 in HD, basically, and instead I got Grand Theft Auto 4 with enemies that can't shoot back.

I've been really wanting to play Alan Wake... let's hope I can get my hands on it sometime.

As for Silent Hill, I loved Shattered Memories, but it didn't scare me, only kept me tense. Let's hope Downpour can do both!

Shattered memories was superb.

Besides that though, I've not played a Silent Hill since the very first one.
This is looking pretty good. Alan Wake is one of the few games that make me wish I had a 360 so I like the similarity as well.

Personally I really liked Shattered Memories because it went back to the source and made a great story that had nothing to do with the cult and other regular SH characteristics. Also liked SH4 because it was screwed up, so I must be the few who kept kinda liking SH.

Still I'm also a loyalist who hopes this Silent Hill will blow our minds, or at least be decent and scare the crap out of us.

Harry, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it, don’t wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men’s store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this.

@Xylzac Yeah, GTAIV! In that it felt like I didn't have total control over my character. The jump, the movement, the camera, the aiming. It all felt "too loose". Like GTAIV. Get me now n_nU?

I've been a diehard Silent Hill fan since the original game. I liked Shattered Memories a lot, but the problems I have with Homecoming and Shattered Memories were that they tried to radically change the series in a completely new direction. With Downpour, it sounds much more like they are taking the old formula and trying to evolve it naturally, which I'm hoping really works out.

Although, Jim Sterling really needs to do more research. Every time he rants about Silent Hill it bugs me because he clearly didn't do his research. For example, the town of Silent Hill is NOT abandoned. It's a normal-ish populated tourist spot. The characters we play as are in other layers of reality. That's why other people are around and sometimes you meet up with a lot of people. And Silent Hill was ALWAYS inspired by things like Twin Peaks. Alan Wake was INSPIRED by Silent Hill as well, so saying that Silent Hill looks inspired by Alan Wake is just silly. Downpour just looks like how the old Silent Hills were trying to look like.

So long as the game isn't as ridiculously dark (in terms of lighting) as Homecoming was. I mean, Jesus, even with the contrast of that game turned up high I could barely see anything going on.
