I wouldn't say the avatars are pointless.
after purchasing a ps3, I find myself experiencing a kind of cosy, fuzzy feeling for the xbox 360. ps3 dashboard feels so impersonal and cold.
I revi8sited the 360 dashboard to find that those little avatars of my friends and myself, are rather endearing and adds a friendly family atmosphere.
I actually LIKE looking at my 360 dashboard whereas the ps3 menu is merely a tool.
(well that is, until microsoft decided to plaster it with adverts and make things impossible to find)

Did anyone see Charlie Brooker's recent channel 4 series 'Black Mirror'(might not have aired in America, but its worth checking out if you can). The second episode dealt with this exact issue!
Well Conrad.. I got an email from the Live Rewards team saying that if I changed the Gamertag that I love so much I'll get a full *free* ninja costume.
Talk about both stupid (because I'd never change my tag, I like it far to much --and it was a damn random one MS managed to find me!) and a complete carrot on a stick (because... Its a ninja suit!)
As a side note: Theres a chance that I know the person who's avatar is up in the header... Or someone who put the same exact outfit together.

Though it's about time we stopped judging whether or not people were hot by how they look like and instead by which out of a very small selection of clothing they choose to wear and how much money they have spent on completely useless things. Small victories.

@CapnJustice - Yeah, I saw that, too! That and the first episode were really good, not so much the third but I don't think Brooker wrote that one.
