Significant WipEout HD update hits tomorrow photo

Looks like I might have to re-install WipEout HD on my PlayStation 3! Sony has announced that it will be pushing out an update (V1.30) for the anti-gravity racer tomorrow, complete with some sexy new features.

What's new? A new online ranking system.  A new podium screen you'll see after you win (or lose) a race, along with up to 33 badges you can win and display online. You can now send out game invites. (Uh... long overdue much?) There's also a new spectator mode, which will allow you to sit back and watch a race in progress; you might want to do that, because WipEout HD is one spectacular-looking game.

There's also been some new options added, which you can check out after the jump. So, can we add WipeEout HD into the Friday Night Fights roster?

Additional options:

  • HUD Weapon Hints on/off.
  • Opponents - Choose to create a Public, Friends-only or Invite-only game.
  • Barrel Rolls on/off
  • Pilot Assist Allowed on/off
  • Number of laps (max 20)

Sweet, this game's been on the back burner with RE 5 released and me getting a DS. But I think I might have to jump back in.

I highly doubt if this update will make the game itself more playable. They're all good (and indeed overdue) features but the core of the game stays the same. Not much fun. And they've missed one very important feature. The voice-chat is horrible in that game. You couldn't understand or hear anybody. Maybe they've fixed that before but I haven't played it since the first week after it's release.

So I doubt it'll get back into the FNF roster. If everybody wants to yes but for me, no. I mean, there's a ton of great games that do deserve to get back. Warhawk for instance. That game might be less shiny but the playability and fun factor (yeah, I said it) is much greater than WipEout.

But yes, it looks fantastic.

@SubOrbital

Just compare it with it's predecessors and you'll agree. Where's the sense of speed? I can't find it and a lot of my PSN friends with me.

WipEout HD blows donkey dick. The graphics are awesome, but everything else sucks ass.

Vehicles are SLOW AS SHIT compared to previous WipEout games and similar racing games such as the F-Zero series, controls are fucked. Unless you're a freak and have played that shit for 50,000 hours you have to play with the stupid steering assistance on which makes you bob and weave all along the track which consequently makes the already slow game even slower.

And yes, the voice chat is the ABSOLUTE WORST on PS3. It's a fucking joke. Seriously. I'm like fuck that game.

Great to hear , I really enjoyed this game , and I still have to win on all tracks in the phontom class the mode were the computer decides to be great-white pirahnasarus-rex vicious( yes I had to make up a fictional creature to describe how hard that mode is, its that difficult ). I guess with these features i'll hop back online too.

Wow, so much hatred for this game. When people ask what I did to prepare for the LSAT, I tell them that this game was most responsible for my success, since I took a week off before that accursed test with the intent to study, yet mostly I just played this game.

and, @SantanaClaus89, you absolutely do not have to play with steering assistance on, it actually makes you worse by far at the game, which only takes two hours at the maximum to get the hang of. However, the fact that you apparently never played for any length of time with it off would probably go far in explaining why you think this game is "SLOW AS SHIT". There's one whole race mode that does nothing other than successively increase your speed until you can no longer steer (a result of the breakneck pace, and not a deficiency in the controls) and crash. Good times.

I'll jump back to it to have a few more online races, but I doubt I'll play it regularly again. That'll come when extra tracks are released.

First of all: Re-install? WTF?

I think Wipeout HD is one of the most addictive games ever. I'm trying to get Gold (Elite) on every event, and it's nice to be challenged by non-rubberband, non-cheating AI. It's got that One-More-Race feeling about it, that I try hard to resist, but usually fail if it's still early (before 3am anyway).

The unlockables you get as you play and the loyalty-points per team really help draw you in. Looking forward to this :)
