Sign-ups for the Xbox LIVE update preview program are GO! photo

Hey there good lookin'. Desperate to get early access to the upcoming social networking dashboard update for Xbox 360? Today is your lucky day -- sign-ups for the preview program are currently open.

Both Gold and Silver Xbox LIVE members are eligible, although you'll need to have Gold if you want to try out the Facebook or Twitter functionality; otherwise, you can just play around with the new Zune features.

To get in, you need to take a quick survey. Make sure to use the Windows LIVE ID connected to your XBL account, otherwise bad things will happen. Very bad things indeed. Those who make it through successfully can expect an email in about a week.

Good luck!

Serial numbers, console IDs, and all that jazz? Yeesh.
I haven't got my console in front of me at the minute, so I'll pass this time. It's probably first come first served.

Where's the program sign up where we can opt out of having either of these on our Xbox?

Pass.

I was about to do this then remembered that I'm never going to use it. I wonder if I can just delete it.

Yeah, I thought about signing up for this, then realized I usually have my laptop next to me with Tweetdeck going while gaming. I also do not use Facebook, so this update is kinda meh for me.

I'm pretty sure you can just remove the damn channels, why is everyone so against it? I was going to sign up, but then I remembered the last Wii update, and the PS3 update before it, and the 360 one before it. And I really don't want a brick.

Especially since this update is essentially the guinea pig lot.

Why do they keep dismissing Last.Fm like it's the least important feature to be included? As many things that could Tweet and update Facebook, they should show some love.

I have do not Facebook and I do not Tweet. However, I have a Zune and a Zune HD. So I want to fiddle with the new Zune settings. That's the only reason I did this boring survey. It's all model numbers and techno mumbo jumbo.

@darkage

If your console is from a region that supports it and you're subscribed to a Gold account, the Xbox has no way of knowing where you are. I have a friend in Japan that piggybacked on my Netflix account for over a year until his system RROD for other reasons.

I wish there was a way to opt out of all this crap. Especially the avatars they added a while ago. None of this adds to my gaming experience and most likely eats resources (bandwidth mostly I'm sure). PS I still prefer the old interface to NXE.

This is cute and all, but this is just one of the things they're adding to enhance the perceived value of a Gold account. If Silver had multiplayer, very few people would give a shit about stuff like this to actually pay for Gold, and MS knows it.

I never minded paying for Gold, but it bugged me when I got my buddy a used 360. He's had fun playing Fallout 3 and stuff, but he really didn't want to pay extra just so we could play some game together online, even if it was just occasionally playing some Arcade board game or something, since we could do the same thing for free ANYWHERE ELSE. And I was like, "Yeah, why should he?"

I don't own a PS3 but I'm hoping it starts doing REALLY well and adding more features like the cross-game chat, so just maybe (though unlikely) MS will reconsider the business model of Live.
