Sick hybrid: Xbox 360 controller inside a DualShock 3 photo

Are you sick of playing XBLA games with the 360 controller's rubbish D-Pad? Well, thanks to the modding community, help is on the way. The above photo is a particularly sweet mod in which someone trapped a 360 controller's brain inside a DualShock 3's body, using the power of SCIENCE!

It's missing a few things, such as headset support and trigger buttons, but this is something that the creator hopes to include in his next attempt. Definitely a cool hybrid though, in that "goes against everything Mother Nature intended" kind of way. He even changed the LEDs to a more 360-flavored green. 

Not something that I imagine would be handy for all Xbox games, but could definitely be worth a look for the SHMUP fans among us.

I heard about someone doing the opposite, gutting a 360 controller and swapping in the PS3 guts. Burling sounded pretty excited about it.

Honestly, I'm not a very big fan of the PS1/2/3 d-pad either. I always found it to be brutal on the thumb after long play sessions and the four little "nubs" don't give me as much control as I would like. Still, it's far better than the 360 d-pad.

I love the 360 controller for 3D games, but I would love to see the guts put into a ver. 2 Sega Saturn controller for 2D games. That would be a sweet d-pad and nice number of buttons.

what sane human being would willing use the most uncomfortable controller ever designed? i'd much rather have a 360 controller as a substitute for a dualshock 3.

If he really wanted the best of both worlds, he would have included the analog nubs from the Xbox controller since their concavity is better for shooters.

Ugh, I hate the playstation controller, always have.

Plus since when was the Playstation Dpad good? I never found it that great (if not boarderline crap)

Awesome mod! But yea, you have to figure out how to incorporate the trigger buttons and headset support.

Remember though, the DS3 has like 8,000,000 more buttons when you include the pressure sensitivity...

Oh, that's right, developers never put that to use.

I can live without headset support, but the loss of triggers means virtually every 360 game is unplayable since they rely so heavily on those 4 shoulder buttons.

i'd rather see a DS3 inside a 360 case to be hobnest

If you want a good controller, go for the gamecube or classic. In my experience, these are the most comfortable.

Since my two favorite controllers of all time are the SNES controller and DualShock, I would totally buy this.

I hate the D-pad on the 360

Dreamcast controller > * for my giant ass hands.

That being said...I never dug the DualShocks so this doesn't mean much to me. It is a pretty slick looking mod though.

The only reason to enjoy this would be the improved d-pad, and the PS3 d-pad isn't even that great. Otherwise, I'd rather put a PS3 controller's guts in a 360 controller.

I absolutely love the PS2 controller. Best controller ever, IMO. Never really used a PS3 controller, but I'm guessing it's the same except with triggers instead of L2 and R2. So yayz. =]

I actually like how that looks quite a bit, but the 360 controller itself is just more comfortable. At least the D-pad on this one would actually be, you know, useful.

Agreed 100%. The 360's controller is probably the best controller I've ever used with the Dreamcast's coming in second. The dual-shock is absolute garbage; I've never used something so uncomfortable.

I believe that the 360's controller is the most comfortable and the overall best controller. But Dualshock's D-Pad is much better. It's hard as hell for me to pull of fatalities and combos on Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
