Shocker: Some GameStop locations use bathrooms as storage photo

[Update: It looks like this video has been pulled from YouTube with the quickness. But trust me, it was shocking. Info below.]

Depending on your level of "germophobia," you may want to look away from the above video. What you're seeing is "spy cam" footage of the inside of a GameStop employee restoom, and yes, it looks like it's where they store some of their consoles.

Disgusting? Maybe. Depends on how much faith you put in the ability of a GameStop employee to not miss the bowl, I suppose. Here's a news flash, though -- an endless warehouse does not lie beyond the metal door that sits at the back of most retail stores, GameStops included. Considering the number of SKUs being dumped onto retail, space for storing inventory is a precious commodity. And have you seen the size of the box that Guitar Hero World Tour comes in?

Engadget writes: "On a serious note, we're telling ourselves that there's just no way this happens in even a meaningful amount of GameStop locations." Well, as someone who worked for the specialty retailer at a number of locations for more years than I'd like to admit, this is more common than you'd like to think.

So is something like this a deal breaker? I mean, between the fact that they sell people used games as new (arguably not the case) and won't leave you alone about their discount card, will you never step foot inside a GameStop again?

I've had nothing but great experiences at my local gamestop. I don't really get the universal hatred towards it.

Anyway, why is there a bathroom in a Gamestop in the first place?

and how did the video get pulled? are we not suppose to know the truth anymore or does gamestop own youtube? looks like journalism is starting to become corporate owned (no offence nick or d-toid) but the day when the real truth is told is the day the lawsuits are filed. where has the integrity gone? are these truths that bad that we shouldn't know of them. even the major news outlets have mainly now just been their opinions and not the real truth, like fox's mass effect slander to gta's supposed rape scenes, their not there but just the mere mention of them and the opinions are harsh. well, at least the weather channel hasn't lied to me......yet.

Augh, I bought my "new" copy of Metal Slug Anthology and it had red spots and scratches all over the disc.

I really don't care anymore, I'm set on just buying on-line. Gamestop is a shit house of hell for video games. However, once in a while a rare used game will pop in from out of nowhere, so i admit to slipping in there once in a while.

Just wanted to point out that the story you guys ran a few weeks ago about the former GameStop employee making a 9 youtube video saga against Gamestop, and doing it the same way Yahtzee does already told us this in one of the videos. Not sure how many of you watched those, but they were interesting so I watched them all. And yep, he said they keep Xboxes in the bathroom.

I've never had a problem with the Gamestops here in California around the Sacramento area. They've always gone out of their way to help me get the best deals, even going as far as letting me use their discount card if I forgot mine, or cutting coupons out of GI magazine to save extra money.

They've always had the games I pre-order when I go to pick them up and look up used games that I'm looking for and let me know which other stores have them in the area.

I might just be an exception, but man... they do not deserve all the hate they are getting. I wouldn't have been able to find half of the old games I have in my library without them, let alone at the price I got them for.

Wow, a major retail chain is doing something unethical, O RLY?

Honestly, there is so much venom from this site for Gamestop. Sure, I wish Funcoland would've stayed separate, I wish EB Games would've stayed separate, I wish we'd have a half decent gaming store that would actually have new games available for purchase, but, at the end of the day, it's another place to possibly go. I go there occasionally. I go to Wal-Mart occasionally. I buy online occasionally. All of have their strengths. All have their weaknesses. All have their ethical concerns.

As a complete sidenote, if you think Ebay's prices are better, trust me.. they'd be a lot different if there was no Gamestop. If the only place to buy used games was Ebay, the entire market would be different.

Also on top of that, they let me check out all the copies of a used game and pick out the best one they have. That sure beats ebay or amazon when buying used games. I like to be able to see what I'm buying, then if you hate the game after you get it home, you have 7 days to take it back.

That's pretty good stuff.

Agreed with Nick on this one. If you don't like it, don't shop there. I only buy from GameStop if I know the total cost of buying it there (price+taxes+gas spent) is less than that of getting it online (price+shipping). That's a rare occasion now a days, but I think some of you are hating on GameStop while secretly sneaking there when you're offline to buy Madden or whatever other game is coming out.

The first store I worked at stored 360 and PS3 systems in the bathroom; the second store I worked at stored marketing materials in the bathroom. It's pretty common; the space in the back room is pretty limited. Didn't realize it was a big deal.

If you actually care, just don't buy there.

Whatever happened to buyer responsibility? Dtoid is so full of all this Gamestop hate, yet I constantly read about people buying stuff there or the obligatory "you can buy that used at Gamestop for $2".

It's the same with Wal-Mart - everyone hates them, but I don't see you fuckos breaking from the herd and paying more somewhere else.

Yeah it only costs 5 bucks to for EB card in Canada where I got it.

Also I work in a grocery store and we keep fresh produce in the bathrooms, right beside the toilets, usually not even kept in a box just scattered all over the floor, covered in piss, blood, shit, and semen.

Cost of Card: $15
10% of 200: $20

Savings of $20 - $15 cost = $5 recouped.

L2Read.

Recoup-. to get back the equivalent of: to recoup one's losses by a lucky investment.
2. to regain or recover.
3. to reimburse or indemnify; pay back: to recoup a person for expenses.

You would save 5 dollars from a 20 dollar purchase, not recoup 5 dollars from the cost of the card. L2define

For fucks sake, my point was never that Gamestop sucks. I do think that they suck but the entire crux of what I've been saying is directed solely at the Edge card and generally towards buying used games from pretty much any retail outlet.

Buying used games from stores is generally a poor way to save any significant amount of money but it's a simple way to combine saving a few dollars and convenient purchasing. The deal is all in convenience though. If you actually want to save money though you pretty much need to go online (which scares Luddites and paranoid people which seems to make up a strangely large amount of the internet)

@ Killas2

That's actually an incredibly ignorant statement. Considering that it's an auction system the prices are already set by the exact amount people are willing to pay. If used video games were hard to find (which would never happen even if Gamestop did stop doing trades) the prices would still only go as far as people were willing to pay. People already try and sell used copies of Halo 3 for $80 and they don't sell.

@ EternalDeathSlayer

I want to say that that's an argument from final consequence but it might just be a totally illogical statement. Why would it be that a business exclusively devoted to selling video games would be entirely obliterated by a side effort of an electronics department store. Yes, Best Buy is legitimate competition but there it really just doesn't seem sensible that they would become exclusive or even significantly dominant in providing video games.

The card costs nothing.

Game Informer is 19.98$ subscription price.
Game Informer is 14.99$ subscription price bundled with the EDGE Card.

The company has been around for less than 10 years, and the industry has grown exponentially in the past decade, so the notion that perhaps older stores which were built when gaming was on par with comic book sales, have to utilize less than traditional storage methods isn't too hard to understand.

But, you guys will absolutely shit yourself when you see the next generation of GS stores that are right around the corner.

The company is legitimately making a strong effort to rid the internet driven mantra. This is the sort of attitude I expect at Joystiq, and I suppose as Dtoid gets bigger and bigger, more of the sheep like opinions will herd on over.

The policies I was talking about were in relation to their employees and their need to sell pre-orders and Game Informer subscriptions in order to keep their jobs. If it were an incentive policy, where they got a bonus based on the amount of pre-orders they got, it'd be one thing. But to think that if you're not lucky enough to get a certain amount of people to pre-order a game you'll lose your job... well that just sucks.

I had a brief stint with Gamestop, and we did practice this. However, it was in a mall, and we were told to use the public restrooms.

I'm surprised no one has yet bitched about my biggest beef with Gamestop, so I'm going to take it upon myself to whine about gutting. I swear I've never heard of such a stupid practice in all my life. I can't think of a single instance in any other retail envrionment where this practice occurs. Sure, some stores might have display copies of a particular item, but the difference there is that they sell it to the customer upon request, and they don't unbox 8 DIFFERENT COPIES OF THE SAME PRODUCT. That is simply unnecessary. How hard would it be to print a few covers off the internet and stick them in blank boxes? Does it really make a difference in sales if there's two open copies on a shelf as opposed to 4?

For my final whine, I'd like to comment on a practice that may or may not be the norm in other Gamestops. When the store receives new product, the employees were allowed "check out" a copy of the game. Keep in mind that this is true for all games, even those just released which don't have any used counterparts to use yet. Upon returning the game to the store, it would proceed to sell the game as new. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that constitute a used product?

To all those saying stores should get creative with storage, at the Gamestation I mentioned every square foot of space was filled with employee belongings, management documents, schedules and various peripherals like steering wheels and joysticks. That's before mentioning all the unsorted and processed preowned games and promo discs and out of date magazines waiting to be sent back.

Truth is, there really is not a lot of space in the back and when you sell something like 3-4 consoles a day, they're going to go in the most out of the way place as you don't have to go in there that often. Were consoles ever stored outside the toilet? Yeah sure, but most of the time it just wasn't possible. With game exclusive peripherals becoming more and more common space in the storerooms and offices and general backroom area is at more and more of a premium. Putting stuff in the toilet IS stores getting creative.

And to respond to DarkTower, I know that in a lot of game stores employees will get first dibs on new stock but when it comes to borrowing games its usually restricted to preowned stock.

Hmmm. This is easily fixed with a call to their district manager, because as people have said before, it is a violation of health code.

So. Instead of making a video about it...someone could have made one phone call and changed what they didn't like. Yet, not one person has done it in this case.

Yeah, and for the Edge Card, I attempted to buy one issue by itself and it was over 9 dollars. So when you do a price breakdown, it's like this:

$9 for the magazine itself
$6 for the discount for 12 months

approx. $15 but then -10% of what ever you bought there on that same transaction...makes sense if you're a regular there or buy games semi-frequently. But you know, keep with the hate for things you know nothing about...it's entertaining.

Gee thanks Nick for reminding me that the bathroom in my store is bigger than my stock room (and you've seen it!)

As some people said, it does happen, but it's not at every store. The stuff stored in my bathroom is as far away from the toilet as possible.... just in case. You can't always trust those holiday hires to bathe, let alone hit the bowl every time.

Just because I'm such a nice guy, I'll even quote myself for you.

"Rounding up, after spending $200 you've saved 3%. After you make back your first $15 you need to spend $50 to get another $5. In your first year of Edge card ownership you need to spend $900 to get a new 360 or PS3 game on saving alone. If you shop there exclusively and very frequently, you may as well get one since you're already pissing your money away but there is really absolutely no reason to own an Edge card."

I'm not sure if I'm more bothered by the stupidity or the ignorance of your statement.

if the storage area is small (much like many gamestops) I don't see any reason against using a clean bathroom as storage. I mean the bathroom for one is usually locked and it gives employees an excuse not to let anyone use it. Lets say some employee does miss the toilet a little and somehow magically splash a box. There is a nice plastic covering around it.... that being said I never bought anything from gamestop smelling like piss. I try not to buy there though, I can get cheaper deals elsewhere and they make you wait a very long time before they send your receipt over to a company like sony or microsoft.

When i worked at gamestop, we stored all systems in the bathroom. It's a door that can be locked, and most gamestop (mall locations) don't have storage areas almost at all. With most modern systems they boxes are very large. I think it's pretty stupid to be talking about this now, considering these stores have been doing it since they opened. Systems in a bathroom are hardly a device to carry disease or whatever people are assuming lives in bathrooms.

You are failing. The magazine itself is what you've forgotten, and what I even split into a different line. Whether you like the magazine or think it's a snot rag, the idea is that you got a gaming publication + 12 months of 10 percent off games. Your math is flat out wrong.

But I've missed an essential point, what does an Edge Card have to do with some stores not following health code? Nothing, and it's pretty clear you're one of those GameStop bashers.

Does everyone who trolls the comment section have some kind of brain chip that forces them to use the word "fail" (or a variation) like some kind of retarded parrot?

The math isn't wrong. Seriously, you're just sitting there calling random bullshit without providing anything to not just backup your point but to even clarify it. 10% of $150 is $15, 10% of $50 is $5. to pay for a $69.99 game and a $15 card you have to spend $850, without tax. If you can count, the math is right.

To get the Edge card (and whatever else) you pay $15 and I've already done the math for that. Even being generous and assuming that an EB employee shows up and says "free Edge card" you need to spend between $400 and $700 to save enough to buy a $40-70 dollar game. To make an Edge card worth it, you need to spend hundreds of dollars exclusively at Gamestop every year. It eliminates any ability to bargain hunt.

I also don't care to be called "one of those Gamestop bashers" since it's an entirely legitimate position formed off research, experience, and information. Holding a widely held opinion is not exclusive to band-wagoning. Ever take the long-shot it might be because it is either correct or legitimate?

This entire conversation only came up because someone proselytising for Gamestop said what a great deal it was and I disagreed. I didn't start by bashing it.

Here's some news for you; bathrooms are usually extremely clean, because they're one of the few places that actually gets scrubbed in a workplace. This is far, far more of a social faux pas than a hygiene issue.

There's a reason disinfectant ads constantly say that there's more bacteria on your chopping board than your toilet seat, and that's because if there's germs on your toilet seat, YOU'RE USING IT WRONG.

What you really have to fear is anywhere that people's hands are constantly. Computer keyboards, second hand controllers, cash registers, that sort of thing, because hands pick up everything, and not everyone washes their hands properly when leaving a bathroom... especially if someone's stacked a bunch of 360s around the sink!

You're under the mistaken impression that there aren't mountains of used games outside of Gamestop. Like I said, if the supply of used games became somehow incredibly limited (limited production runs along with digital distribution being the primary method for a games release being pretty much the only reasonable scenario) then the price on eBay would most definitely increase. But, and this a pretty big but, it would still be below sticker price and it would still be competitive to what Gamestop has been doing with used games so far.

With or without this, Gamestop is a joke and I wholly refuse to shop there. Funcoland was better in terms of staff than Gamestop, and Gamestop was better than EB - but it seems like when they bought EB it really brought the company down in terms of customer service. It was EB that initially sold opened and returned games as 'new' (and refused to sell an actually new copy even after you specified it was for a gift) and I guess this has carried over to Gamestop.

All I know is that the employees at Gamestop (several area locations) are smarmy as all hell, and I end up waiting in line behind maybe 3 people for about 20 minutes just to find out they don't have what I want - or more often, they think they have it but they can't find it. I'll go to FYE, Toys R Us, pretty much anywhere but Gamestop.

If your customer service is terrible, and your price point isn't better than the competition - I don't shop with you. (Time is money.) Not to mention the bother about 'reserving' games. I've been gaming for over 20 years, have never reserved a game in my life - and I've NEVER had trouble getting the game I want day of release. The idea of reserving games is just pointless.
