Who are these people that are apparently constantly updating their HDD that this is a serious OMG, HAVE TO POST ABOUT HOW BAD FIRMWARES ARE issue? It sucks and it's stupid it got left behind, but Sterling is always there to overreact.
Also, I love how you did an entire post there and didn't clearly explain what is calling the issue.

@tensai I had a problem once... I now wait for the patch of the patch which should be out sometime in the next week to 10 days
@aurain I believe @jamesmielke on twitter (formerly of egm mentioned an issue with it and his deadspace 2 save a few days ago I'm not 100% sure there is a correlation but it sounds about right.

I actually had some PS3 jailbreaking "thing" follow me on twitter, I promptly tweeted at them a few times about how they're causing extra firmware updates and ruining it for everyone else and how the gaming community doesn't think it's big or clever and is not impressed by their "l33t haxing skillz" - in fact i'm going to tweet them this headline now....
Turns out they've unfollowed me now, which is nice, but if you want to spam them they're @PS3Jailbreaking
Seriously, I would put money on it that at least 75% of the firmware updates in the last 2 years would never have happened if hackers weren't trying to get free games.
(I know wah wah homebrew, buy a linux pc and cry me a fucking river)
But yeah, firmware updates, bit of a pain in the arse, but linked intrinsically to this modern technology we all use over this internet thing, sure it's a bummer that it causes issues with a really nice feature (being able to use any HDD) which Sony could have avoided by charging us fucking stupid money for "special" HDD's. (The competition's tactic) but a small price to pay to be able to slap in a 500gb HDD for £50.
Oh what's that? One of my phone apps needs an update? And my Steam games, and My Xbox, and my PSP and my work PC needs a java update and a flash update, and my Printer needs it's firmware updating.
Oh noes.

So wait. Sony releases a billion firmware updates, and they get like...3 of them wrong, and now its something they suck at? How does that make sense? If I do something dozens and dozens if time, and get a only a couple wrong, I'd say I've got a pretty good success rate.
I'm all for security but when I am going to be inconvienced be sure to get it working properly. A a good QA team helps check to make sure these issues don't happen. This is not to say M$ and Nintendo are perfect but it is not every other update and patches to fix patches. Sony clearly has a problem with this. Perhaps their hardware is a little too difficult to program for. (Sorry I couldn't help myself on that one.
@ Kal Zakath. You know what's a bigger inconvenience? Rampant piracy and online cheaters. Firmware updates with minor glitches are rare, and they are not permanent glitches. Give me a break. Pick your battles.
Maybe the problem is another one. Maybe the PS update has removed the posibility of changing the HDD...

I usually take my breakfast while my PS3 updates, about 20 minutes.

@favian I am and I pick this one look at the patch history over the last year and the issues that went along with it. A patch followed by a patch of the patch within 2 weeks or so. Why don't they ban the console if its a hacking/piracy issue? If pirates are going to pireate single player games there is nothing they can really do but they can ban the console from their online service and leave the innocents out of it... Firmware updates are obviously not a solution as evidenced by how quickly its cracked. They are trying to put a band-aid on a limb that needs to be amputated.
Still haven't had one issue with my launch 60gig. I bought a slim 250gig gow edition for my gf and yet to have an issue with that one either.

@SC & Aurain: I don't fault Sony for doing updates at all. They deserve to protect their interests. They should just make sure that these updates don't cause problems for users. And it also takes a long time to do them (system and game). Most xbox updates take 10 seconds or less. heck, I wouldn't mind daily updates if they wanted if they were all that fast.
It will get fixed again, but the question does linger if Sony knows why the bug happens. You would think the first fix would have eliminated it from reoccurring.

However, I do admit that I now smirk every time an update is announced, since I know Jimbo is somewhere howling in rage. That knowledge is well worth the 2 minutes it takes me to set up the download. He's gonna have a heartattack from it one day, though, if he isn't careful. No one wants to be killed by thier arch-nemisis, especially when it's just a firmware update.

I'm still convinced that the majority of the "nEw firmware braked! my machie@!!" threads are people who are terrible with electronics and can't figure out how to update stuff.
Meh I don't get it? I turned on my 360 today and it needed a firmware update that took forever... then again it may have been multiple updates considering the fact its been about a month since it's been on.
