Shocker: PlayStation sales increased during Black Friday week, says Sony photo
     PSP

Who would have thought that during the week of Thanksgiving -- home to the dreaded retail rush known as Black Friday -- that sales would increase?

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America announced that PlayStation brand unit sales actually increased by 178%. Additionally, sales dollars also saw an increase, up by 154%. Other fascinating figures, guaranteed to blow your mind:

  • PlayStation 3 hardware sales increased by 245% when compared to Black Friday sales last year
  • Since November 2nd (along with the availability of both the 40GB and 80GB PS3 models, PS3 hardware sales have increased by 298%
  • PlayStation  Portable hardware sales increased by 136% when compared to previous week sales
  • PlayStation 2 hardware sales increased by 287% when compared to previous week sales

All of these numbers were taken from sales figures from the top ten retailers in the US, and are evidence of one thing -- more people shop on Black Friday than any other day of the year. With that in mind, I think that next year, stores should be prepared to have crowds on that day. Maybe they could even have big sales or something.

Just a thought.

I think Sony made this whole Black Friday bullshit up.

Alternately, they stole Black Friday from Nintendo.

That pic indeed does win. Also, Sony has the worst PR department in the world.

I'm sure the Wii and 360 didn't benefit from this. Only Sony got the boost.

Or they could have hoped Nintendo and Microsoft would have announced figures, and not made Sony look weird. So this is pretty awkward.

Looks like the Sony marketing machine is fully operational... especially considering all the PS3 ads I saw on the tube this past week. meh.

oh right this post was about sony, heres a quote from an interview with kaz harai from the latest issue of the playstation official magazine
OPM: Were you surprised by the initial reaction from the community to the demandfor vibration effects in the controller?
KH: More the longevity of the requests - it was consistent. It was clearly not something people were willing to let go - not a fad request. So after I got back to japan, I got the engineering guys, and said "look, I understand the technical issues... [involved in combining both rumb effects and the SIXAXIS motion in one controller] can we give it one more go and come up with a conclusion?"

also known as... look just throw some rumble on the SIXAXIS, we'll go settle the lawsuit with immersion so we can release it.

you see months ago Phil Harrison outright said that Sony lied about not being able to technically make a rumbling motion sensative controller (ahem wiimote) and said yeah, we cant do it because of the immersion suit. looks like no one told Kaz.

another fine day at Sony.

Well duh, one can only guess that many people were saving money to buy a PS3 and black friday was the best time to let the bills fly.

Yeah, I was at Target between like 6:15 and 7 on Black Friday, and a woman next to me was getting two slim PSP Star Wars packs, one for each of her kids. Go PlayStation brand!

Thats retarded, of course sales were up, the ps3 was released 1 week before black friday last year, that is the only time that ps3 was hard to find and buy.

Last Black Friday Ps3 was still in short supply. so whoopdeefuckingdoo. That being said ps3 probably will do decently due to the price drop.

(oh and it plays games too)

Why does this site find it necessary to bust on SONY all the time. It is really biased from a news perspective. They didn't mention anything but facts in their release. All you did was show your own hate. How is the reader supposed to trust the rest of your opinions.

You're not serious, are you? Because I'm a pretty big Sony supporter, and I'm a pretty big fan of their console(s). But comparing Black Friday's sales to the sales of the prior work is laughable. No one is denying the numbers.

For all the "Duh!" comments: All of theses companies are going to post sales figures for this weekend. It makes it kind of ironic that you say "no wonder" for sony's advertised increase and pretend that it's inconsequential--given the time of year--since you don't seem to recognize that companies ALWAYS report their black friday sales.

I sold all of my PS3's (5 40's,2 60'2, 2 80's) on friday, and all of my Wii's (8). I sold 3 360 premiuims, and no Elites or Halo LE's. That same week, I had no Wii or PS3 defectives (which is usually the case) and I had 6 360's returned for warranties.
