Shocker: Kids love violent videogames, want M-rated titles photo

A rather redundant study has shown that young people love adult-oriented videogames, with M-rated titles proving popular among filthy youths. Apparently, we needed research to conclude that people want sex, violence and swearing.

310 kids aged 7-17 were studied by researchers from the University of Michigan and VU University in Amsterdam, and is being used to suggest that age ratings make a tempting "forbidden fruit" among young people. As is common with these studies, the methods used weren't very scientific. Participants were given fictional game descriptions and asked which ones they liked the sound of. The stuff with stronger content was more desirable.

While I question both the point and necessity of this study, I agree with its findings, mostly because the conclusion is bloody obvious. Every parent knows that if you tell children they can't do something, that becomes the first thing they want to do. As we refuse to talk about violence and sex in society, we lend such things more power than they deserve, and turn them into alluring mysteries for children.

Videogames are no different. Children are told they cannot play them, so what do you think they're going to want to do? Never mind the most simple truth of all -- young or old, people love vice.

How do these kids buy M-rated games? Show off a fake ID? I just don't get it anymore. Also why do they ask only 7-17 year olds? Why not 18-99 year olds as well? There is TOO MANY studies on kids and video games but not enough on adults and video games.

Kids think violent video games are kool and I think smoking is sexy. See the similarities....

Rest assured it was insightful, and full of WIN!

as much as i am tired to hear about these surveys, im equally tired of seeing overly violent visuals in games today. perhaps one day we can demand more from our video games.

I have a problem with the "As we refuse to talk about violence and sex in society." Pretty sure if you turn on the TV you'll be assaulted by sexual media like crazy. I can see what your point is (we as a society tend to be crazily overly sensitive to anything sexual), but the wording really rubbed me the wrong way.
And it is still funny all these retardedly "obvious" surveys.

Games are an outlet, violent games let you go crazy in a safe environment. On the other hand the whole ideal on aggression is parents fault. Honestly I played violent games and never got aggressive to the point of cursing and acting like an idiot. Why? My parents let me play the game but they also raised me properly.

@Chronic

I believe it has to do with the ignorance parents display toward games, the clerk does tell them its M-rated but 90% of the time the parent just says "its just a game" and then they come back the next day complaining that is so horribly violent.
