Shocker: Heavy Rain only possible on the PlayStation 3 photo

If all of what we’re seeing and hearing is accurate, Heavy Rain: The Origami Killer will be one hell of a powerhouse title for the PlayStation 3. This is especially good news for Sony, considering the game is slated as an exclusive for the system. But even if the developer, Quanitco Dreams, wanted to jump ship at any point, it sounds like they wouldn’t be able to. Heavy Rain’s director, David Cage, doesn’t think the game is possible on the Xbox 360.

“I think this game can only be done on Playstation 3. We used all the SPUs,” Cage told NowGamer in a recent interview. “I think to do the visuals, and all the stuff we’re doing would be too difficult [on the 360]. There are amazing physics there, and stuff with crowds that you just couldn’t really get."

Again, judging by the screenshots and video we reported on or received, it seems like Cage is right on target with his assessment. Plus, you know, he’s a developer. He knows these things.

That's what they said about Crysis and the PC.

Then CryENGINE 3 came out.

@Daxelman

Well, it's true. It's not possible on consoles. That's why they had to redo the engine so that it WAS possible on consoles.

"powerhouse title"? Mmmm... dunno about that. Indigo Prophecy didn't rock worlds, exactly. The graphics may flex many-a-muscle, but I doubt John Q will show much interest when they find out that you can't teabag.

I don't even really care. From what I've seen, this game is a lot of "push this button at the right time" stuff.

Yes that is most likely what it is Tony. Did you ever play Indigo Prophecy? It's a real-time adventure game basically.

Yup shit all over it being a PS3 exclusive people, its ok. A game trying to go a new direction in interactive storytelling in the gaming medium while pushing the graphical prowess of a game console sounds good to me. Maybe if it was an FPS it would garner more support from the 360 crowd. Although I think that it would be possible on the 360 its just that they are not developing the title for it.

Meh, I don't really care about this game, I lost interest in this game LONG ago. Let the PS3ers have it. I'm just waiting for Omikron 2, but if they release that exclusively for the PS3, there will be hell to pay.

I thought that at first too but this is like the 19 dev we have heard say this, so I'm guessing there's some truth to it. I know some do it for shameless advertising , but that can't be everyone, SOME honest people have to exist in the industry.

that or I'm just being an optimist again, and everyone is a dirtbag.

as time wears on, the technical differences between the ps3 and 360 will become increasingly apparent. it takes a lot of time to learn how to milk a multi-core system, and the titles should be getting increasingly more interesting in the next few years

I can't believe anyone is actually surprised that PS3 is (significantly) more powerful than 360. Hopefully Microsoft won't be able to force the next generation of consoles before we get to see that power fully utilized. I don't have any interest in buying another console until at least 2013.

And Indigo Prophecy kicks ass! It's got some rough spots but really interesting story telling, smart use of controls, and quick-time events that are actually good for the most part. From any other developer I'd have written this off as going to suck a long time ago, but with their track record I'm pretty excited.

Why is it that every big PS3 has a case of "LOL MEGABYTES?" Talk gameplay, not processing power.

I think this will redefine cinematics in games. Everything is high consequence, so the game will shape out interestingly.

Dax, take a look at the CryEngine3 trailers, and then some actual footage of Crysis, there's quite a difference in lighting and distantLOD.

As for this, sure, I believe them. I don't know why anybody's taking it as a slight against the 360, it's a fact the ps3 has more brute force to throw around, and physics, AI, are complex and expensive.

Hmm im not sure thats right, the XBox360 and PS3 are comparable in power, just that their architectures are different. If they created an engine that handled the data and jobs in a similar way to the PS3 ( multiple separate tasks handled by the SPUs) but instead allocated them to the hardware threads on the XB360 im sure CPU-wise the game is more than capable of running on the XB. The only real advantage the PSŁ has is the capacity of the storage medium.
If the game has hours and hous and hours of audio and video (that wont fit on a DVD) then i guess that would be a stumbling block for ther XB.

Oh and BTW, the current PS3 will never have games that graphically look significantly better (*) because the XB360 GFX chip is better - more fill-rate so nicer shaders are possible and post-processing and screen-buffer effects are easier to get into a 'frame'.

@ grasslunati, no.

What he's saying is that the experience would be compromised and I can believe him - particularly on the physics side of things. Fact is the PS3 has more brute processing power to throw around. End of.

As PhazonYoshi says it shouldn't be taken as a slight against the 360, as hdj uk said the 360 has a better graphics chip for example (not hugely more powerful but it has a far better architecture), but for physics and AI the PS3 has the upper hand. I love my 360 but I'm not going to begrudge my PS3.

However unlike what hjd uk said the 360's graphics chip is not nearly comparably more powerful than the PS3's that it could take up the extra workload that would be required to offset the 360s lower processing power. Unfortunate but true. Yes Heavy Rain would theoretically be possible on a 360 but, using the Crysis example from earlier, things would have to be compromised (as they have been somewhat in CryEngine3).

If it can't be done on the 360 in its current form I highly doubt a toned down version for the 360 would yield earth shattering differences. Why does a full-length QTE need complex physics anyway? Everything is completely scripted. Hell, from what I've seen, you could just put a bunch of high def video on there and play clips based on your button selection. I hardly find this to be much in the way of "interactive" storytelling either, let alone some bold new direction we should embrace and explore. This is pretty much the minimal level of interactivity you could sell for $60. I'm interested and will play this game, but back off Sony fanboys, people are hating on this game because Indigo Prophecy was polarizing, not because it's a PS3 exclusive.

WRONG! People are hating the game because it is PS exclusive. Any game that is PS3 exclusive, 360 owners try to find a fault and put it down.

Seriously, look up the tech comparisons of the two. They're strikingly similar in ability apart from the storage medium, hjd uk is indeed correct.

Also, exactly what is the excuse for it being "only on PS3"? Stuff with crowds? Look at Dead Rising. Stuff with shader operations? Look at the Cry3Engine. This could be ported to 360 fairly simply, I just put my money on Sony paying big bucks to keep it exclusive. Although if it's intended as a heavily story based game, it should be best if they focus on that rather than porting to every single console under the sun.

Also, PC version PLZKTHXBAI.

And some developers say its harder to code for ps3 and some don't. Whatever until someone tries it, it doesn't matter. I've yet to see something on my ps3 that blows my mind and makes me think its procesing power is worth the hype. Bit whatever, it's the only place for ps3 exclusives so I'll keep it

I have never seen any "Can only be done on.." games which I actually believe to be true. There is a balance between xbox and ps3 and where one falls down the other normally makes up elsewhere. The 360 nearly always comes out better because of the nature of the most popular games. The important line in this article is "David Cage doesn't think.." Hardcore proof of the merits of a particular machine, NOT.

Listen guys,

First off, I wouldn't get so full of myself as to righteously claim whether or not this game could be made possible only on PS3. If you have ever developed games for 360 or PS3, THEN I will listen to you. Otherwise, I figure you just googled PS3 vs. 360 and saw some stats and then crowned yourself king of knowledge.

Secondly, why hasn't anyone brought up the fact that some top scientists who are studying stars and black holes billions of light years away, are using PS3's as alternatives to supercomputers for their advanced processing power, and not 360's? I think that is something to consider in these power struggles...
