Shocker: Final Fantasy XIII sells out in Japan photo

Bet you never could have predicted that, right? Square Enix's latest blockbuster RPG, Final Fantasy XIII, has sold out in Japan after a massive launch day. Shifting over one million copies, the game is said to have been totally consumed almost instantaneously.

This figure does not include the "Lightning Edition" PS3 bundle, meaning that the actual amount of FF XIII players in Japan is bigger than the figure provided by Square Enix. The basic story is this: Loads and loads and loads of Japanese folk are playing Final Fantasy XIII. Most of you are not. Hate them.

Final Fantasy XIII will hit North America on March 9, 2010.

Why didn't they print 2million copies then?

Me thinks they are creating a demand in order to justify a higher price me thinks ^_^.

Pity. You mean Pity them, right?

Can't wait. Pretty sure they're not limiting supply to drive up the price, I mean surely you want to SELL as many as possible? Right.

In fact, I bet it's quite a balancing act, the whole price vs sales thing.

I mean it must have been a tough decision for Activision to bump up the MW2 price, you've got to be 100% certain that people will buy it anyway. Suppose the lack of competition at launch time helped those guys make that decision.

But in japan at least they could have quite easily upped the price a little while still blowing the charts out of the water.

Did they? I have no idea on Japanese game pricing.

oh and you know my gripe about the persistant tagging of these multiplat game stories as xbox360?

This is about the japanese version, which is ps3 exclusive right?

So why does the toilet edition say "xbox360: title"

bias much?

an average 4.5 stars from 217 people out of over 1 million is not 50/50

Go and actually look at the reviews. Anyone who gives the game over 3 stars only gets a 20% helpful rating from people whereas anyone who gives it a 1 or 2 gets an 80% helpful rating. It's also at an average of 3.5, not 4.5 stars.

That's not to say it's 50/50 but there are a LOT of people disappointed with the game. Google translate reveals that people feel the story convoluted, the characters uninteresting and the dialog trite. The battle system is being reported as being monotonous and lacking strategy.

Yeah, I'm not so sure about this one...

I actually thought your sentence said "Shitting over one million copies, the game is said to have been totally consumed almost instantaneously." And considering we are talking about japan, i assumed they had a giant anime bug with giant tentacles sending out an androgenus and silent army of boys to take over japan while everyone was playing the game that said giant bug had pooped out.

Note: this is my way of hating on japan, why could we not have a simultaneous release?

still the reviews are from less than one fortieth of one percent of people who bought the game. Add to that , translating from Google will give you a general idea of what they said, but probably not what they really meant. And...anyone can write a review, even if they don't have the game.

Oh Sexual, you almost did it. You posted and there was NO FANBOY BIAS! I was so proud of you; it was like watching a child grow up!
Then you had to off and ruin it by posting that stupid response. And here I thought you'd finally all growed up.

I'm excited to see more japanese reviews; the hype train (and my love of Final Fantasy) has made me want to get this day one, but something about it reeked of FFX (which I despised). I'll be curious to see if it works better then the final fantasies on the PS2, or if it is just more of the same.

You know this is a multiplat game, and it is tagged for ps3 as well as 360, right? There is no bias here. Stop trying to seem desperate.

Actually this post is only tagged 360 when you visit this site using your Blackberry device and I'm sure other handheld devices as well. I must say that it's strange to constantly see these misleading tags all over this site. Now regarding this post specifically, isn't this post about the PS3 version of FF13 and not the 360 version? Shit, the PS3 version is the only one available in Japan, so I'm a little perplexed by this. Note to editor(s) of this site, fix this issue. It's not a good way to make an unbiased impression on new comers to your site.

@CarbonByGravity: If the newcomers actually care enough about the tags on a random news article to not return, then good riddance.

@Shadowii - I know, I was being so good, then checked the toid on my phone (which oly shows one big tag) and it was 360-a-riffic! Annoying.

Like Carbon says, when you look on a mobile device the tags are fucked up, the fact that it's always fucked up towards the 360, especially on a PS3 article made me drop a bias joke. So shoot me. It's hardly ruining my life.

Still though, when you look on a mobile the front page is..

Xbox 360:
Xbox 360:
Xbox 360:
Xbox 360:
PC:
Xbox 360:

It sucks trying to find the PS3 stories. Just another subtle drop of bias.

; )

seltzermx: I'm sure the guys that run this site don't feel the same way. After all we do live in a capitalist society were new consumers/readers are important. By the way, first impressions do matter, and in today's divisive climate regarding almost everything under the sun, the risk of turning people off right off the bat is highly probable and is bad business. With that said, I don't really care to much. I've just notice a higher frequency of debate regarding an issue that can be fix by manipulating some source code. Cheers!

@CarbonByGravity: True true, numbers are important. But at the same time, do you think Walmart is interested in customers that show up to buy 2 things, then intentionally fall down so they can blame the store? Its like they said in an episode of Studio 60 (the one with the chick that writes for a magazine), "One of her readers is worth 4 of our viewers". Not all consumers are the same.

@CarbonByGravity,

I'm viewing on a regular computer and I can see the 360 tag up there. Not that I care, though.

In fact, I think it's a good idea to keep the 360 tag on this one because Final Fantasy selling by the truckload in Japan could be meaningful to a 360 user as well.

I mean, (@SexualChocolate) do you think that a Japanese review score for FF13 should only get a PS3 tag? Any reviews the game receives in Japan would DEFINITELY still be relevant to 360 users considering whether or not to get the game. You're really just trying to obscure information from the view of 360 owners. You're like the FoxNews of the console wars.

In line with the tagging comments, though. PLEASE keep up with the tags because I very often find that you guys are talking about a game with NO tag (and no mention of a system in the article) and I have no idea what system(s) it's coming out for.

How can her skinny ass arms hold up that sword? I know this is more anime style but seriously her arms are the size of a small tightly rolled up magazine. What's wrong with giving her some muscles? For some reason this really bothers me and kinda disgusts me in a way, idk.

If the game is equated more to FFX than FFXII I think I'll be happy. I enjoyed FFX and I didn't hate Tidus. I enjoyed FFXII's battle system, but I enjoyed FFX's also, so if it's more like FFX but with crazy acrobatic off-the-wall visuals I'll enjoy it.

Convoluted plot has never been an issue for me, FF has yet to throw a story at me that I couldn't follow, and apparently that is one of the huge complaints that I can't ever get clarity on because no one will tell me!

Dialogue and characters are important though, I don't expect I'll align with Lightning much, but maybe Snow is a cool guy. I've never played a rpg where there wasn't a main protagonist that I couldn't identify with. But none has compared to Tales of Vesperia and Yuri who (as far as personality goes) could almost be a digital version of myself.

I hope Japan can see this...because I'm doing it as hard as I can
