Shocker: Final Fantasy VIII tops PSN charts photo

As if you couldn't have guessed, the release of Final Fantasy VIII on the PSN's PSOne Classics channel has been met with enthusiasm by spend-happy gamers, rushing to the top of the PSN chart. The PSN  top ten chart is full of PSOne Classics, in fact, demonstrating that high-end graphics and "next gen" technology simply can't beat a well-made product.

Here's the full top ten for you:

  1. Final Fantasy VIII
  2. PixelJunk Shooter
  3. Final Fantasy VII
  4. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
  5. Resident Evil 2
  6. Frogger Returns
  7. Call of Duty Classic
  8. Borderlands: The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned
  9. Marvel vs. Capcom 2
  10. Battlefield 1943

I was definitely among those who downloaded the adventures of gloomy Squall and his stereotypical friends, and I'll do the same when Final Fantasy IX appears. Square Enix knows full well it can make a ton of money releasing the same old stuff, and it's all our fault.

I'm glad PixelJunk Shooter is still doing well.

That's a weird list.

Pretty much all of it can be summarized in one word: nostalgia.

Nostalgia and Borderlands.

So much for good taste. 6, 7, and 9 are infinitely better.

I'm surprised 7 is still so high, you would think that everyone who wants it would have already bought it by now.

@Xzyliac

Don't forget Pixel Junk Shooter!

PS1 classics have a leg up on the PS Store. They have the benefit of being available to both PS3 and PSP audiences, being cheap, and being a solid list of titles.

8 has it's own qualities, there's no need to compare it to the others.

i bought FF7, FF8 and RE3 off that list. After a couple hours with each its hard to go back especially with some awesome current gen games kickin around, but it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling these games are sitting on my HD in their entirety.

I really imagine it was less for the story and characters, and more for wanting to play Triple Triad.

Actually, it does kind of shock me. I've met so many people who played FFVII, but never thought about FFVIII. As a matter of fact, I know one guy that called FFVII "that Final Fantasy that everyone who owned a PlayStation had."

God damn I hate the Europe PSN, I probably won’t see this for months.

Embittered Squall and annoying judgmental friends would be more accurate. I guess I just have a similar world view to the guy. Each time the guy makes a turn for the better, he's still given shit about the way he was. Reminds me of family.

Nice to see people are giving it a chance, though. None of the PSOne Final Fantasies really had great stories, but FFVIII had the most interesting mix of sidequests and gameplay.

I'm hoping that FFIX comes soon enough, along with Vagrant Story, which SCEA seems content to sit on. Wouldn't mind Final Fantasy Anthology be put up, either.

Or, maybe you're just wrong. You got VI right, but 8 > 7 > 9.

Yes, I know it's all opinions, but that good taste line was not in good taste.

Vagrant Story...now....please.....

Both Europe and US PSN pales in comparison to the Japansese PSN = huge catalog of PS ONE classics and a Premium Demon's Souls theme!

@ Handy: FFVIII is confirmed to be coming out in January, so either next week or the one after.

My view on FFs on the PS1 now?IX = VIII > VII.

I'm stating that VIII is higher than VII is mostly due to nostalgia(first FF I had).I used to think that IX sucked(due to playing VIII first,I loved seeing 9999 every single time,no matter what RPG,and I was 10 years old at the time),but after a recent playthrough,IX's story outshines both VII and VIII(goddamn you,VIII and your Chekov's Library trope).

But yeah, support for VIII on the PSN,ladies and gents.

While VIII tried way too hard, it was still a pretty good game. I'm glad people bought it. Me, I'll play my disc copies because I bought it on release day.

I wont be buying these since I already have the PS1 versions, not sure what the point of buying the same game twice is. What I will say is I loved the hell out of FFVIII, I had more hours clocked into that game than any FF game before it and certainly after it (only exception being FFT). FF9 was a boring pile of crap, I know fanboys love it but I hated it and its the only FF game I never finished.

@SnatchTease : Opinion heard, noted, and about half-agreed with. :) But it doesn't matter which games were better since this is about what the top seller on the PSN is. 6 and 9 aren't available yet, and bet you anyone who downloaded 8 has already downloaded 7 as well.

As for me, I'm happy to see it on offer, and wasn't really surprised to see it topping the download lists this past wekk. I would be happy to see the whole lineup available - hell, all PS1 classics for that matter. But I actually still have my disc for 8, and I don't have a pressing need to play it on PSP, so I doubt I'll be making a purchase any time soon.

I got a PSP for Christmas, and have been loving replaying FFVIII, but I really hope that Vagrant Story comes to the US PSN soon, and FFIX will arrive at some point. I didn't finish either of them when they were first out and would love to try again. I need to know about Vivi!

Cool stuff. I wonder when Vagrant Story will drop on the US servers? It is pretty funny, the US folks want that game, where it seems Europe wants FF8. The PSN cards aren't universal are they? I don't think Sony would let something like that slide.

Loved FFVIII, & may consider trying it again, although I'm sure I've actually still got the dics lying around somewhere. FFVII was the 1st FF I tried, & I just couldn't get into it. Can't see why people keep calling it the definitive FF. I suppose it's all down to opinion.

Hopefully they will put out Suikoden II and it would probably rise pretty high. I wouldn't mind seeing Alundra make an appearance and a few other RPGs. I seen lot on the Japanese PSN, wish we had half those RPG titles on ours.

Load up FFVIII and RE3 on a PSP and that's me set for life. Surprised RE3 is selling better than RE2 though. I adore RE3, to me it's the best in the series, but I've always been under the impression that RE2 was more popular.

I personally wasn't a fan of 9, but I'm with you guys on bringing vagrant story to PSN, or other older Square games for that matter.

I also wish they'd consider Xenogears. That game is hard as heck to find nowadays, I personally loved it, and I'm sure it'd sell pretty darn well if they'd put it up on PSN being the rarity that it is.
