Shocker: Dragon Quest IX sells a lot in Japan photo

Who would have thought that Dragon Quest IX would be such a popular game in Japan? Well, anybody who knows anything about Japan, really, so it shouldn't come as a shock to learn that in just two days, the DS game has sold over two million copies.

The official tally since the game's July 11 launch is 2.34 million, which any analyst would officially recognize as "a buggering f*ckload." Naturally, huge sales of a Dragon Quest game are to be expected in a country where people skive off work in droves so they can stay home and play the game, but it's still impressive. The last PS2 version of the series sold 2.23 million in its opening week. For IX to eclipse that in just two days is some serious stuff.

This is what happens when one of the most popular handheld systems in history collides with one of the most popular RPG franchises. Money happens, my friends.

The dragon quest was too light hearted for my taste. i wasted many dollars on the last ps3 dragon quest and was disapointed hoping to find a good old fashion rpg to play. now the lastest dragon quest has grabed my attention. i really hope this one hold ups.

Not at all surprised. Will it do the same elsewhere though? These jrpg are getting a little tired now, and most things only have to be japanese for gamer to invest in japan.

I hope they get a decent localisation team on this one, the DS remakes have been pretty embarrassing to go through so far. There's a line between "charming" and "grating" and they don't seem to realise they've been dancing on the wrong side of it.

Only 2.3 million? With as popular as the DS is, and as popular as Dragon Quest is... I'm shocked it didn't break 3 million.

Hopefully this encourages them to speed up the localization a bit. I would LOVE it if we could actually see this game here Stateside by the end of this year.
