Shock! Horror! Lost Planet & Dead Rising don't do well in Japan photo

Oh the surprise! The terror! The black voodoo! Could any of us have seen this coming a bloody mile away? Xbox 360 games don't do very well ... in JAPAN! That's right, try and repair your collective ribcages after your heart exploded out of your chest in astoundment and attempt to comprehend it. Capcom's hugely popular Lost Planet and Dead Rising games sold a bucketload over in the US and Europe, but only 10% of their overall sales came from the land of samurai and sexism.

Sarcasm aside, as unsurprising as it is, the idea of Capcom not even shifting 100,000 units in its home country is, quite frankly, abysmal. I'm no fan of either game, but both have enjoyed huge critical acclaim and popularity elsewhere in the world. When you think that Lost Planet and Dead Rising garnered 810,000 and 730,000 sales in the USA respectively, that's a pretty marked difference.

Whatever reasons you might give for the Japanese ignorance of the Xbox 360 and its games - be it the fact it's basically called The 'No'box over there, the idea that the console's too big or that Japanese gamers are just exhibiting their custom xenophobia and won't put their hands on non-Japanese merchandise, I think most of us could agree on one thing -- they're just being very silly at this point.

@ fatbologna,

I think what ur trying to say is:"This whole world is F???ed up, live with it"

Then you are correct, sir.

I look @ this topic in a inverse way:
JP: "Those NA, wont play our hello kitty, they must commit Harakiri!"

EU:"???? JP & NA, We need to come up with our own system, so NA n JP can go eat bill cosby jellow!"

I'm not saying that America and Britain are perfect when it comes to gender - of course they're not. Nobody's perfect right now. The thing is, we're heading in the right direction, and Japan, as advanced as it is, should be joining us. The reason why I'm juding Japan harshly right now is because they should be BETTER than Saudi Arabia and all the countries that revel in how ass-backwards they are.

And that's not giving a free pass to all the fucked up medieval countries out there. As I've said, I have no love for Arabian culture at all. But I think Japan as a modern country should really adopt a less introverted, more progressive culture by now.

My point is, Stripe, is it somehow not possible to care about clitoral circumcision and brutality agains women and STILL give a shit about Japan's sexist culture? You seem to imply that you can only exclusively care about either one, and that's not the case at all. I feel very strongly about the fucked up shit that goes on in the Middle East toward women, it disgusts me thoroughly. I'm just saying, Japan's culture is quite backwardly sexist. That's all I'm saying.

Also, I'm not racist, whoever said Brits were racist regarding Japanese because they love America. I actually am very fond of America and want to live out there, so that's not my reason for being critical of Japanese culture. So yeah.

Am I... am I allowed to comment on this? My bias should be obvious enough.

I'm not exactly sure how we got on the subject of sexism and fucked up porn... but the levels of sexual repression in Japanese society have never been argued. However, repression doesn't intrinsically equal sexism. Repression inheritly creates a breeding ground where sexual expression becomes extreme and subliminal.

For perspective, ever hear of the Victorian Era? Coming off of the Restoration's high sexuality, the Victorian era was a period of prudery. The focus on morality and religion didn't keep them from being sexual, it just meant they figured out other ways of expressing it... like writing dirty letters.

I'm not talking penthouse forum, I'm mean letters so base and perverse they'd make grown men blush.

@FatBologna: Haha, yeah, sexism in kitchens is great. Most of it came from the women too. Ass grabbing, half serious invitations to go home with them. It would have been great if they'd been under 40 or at least monetarily endowed.

But on the topic. Japanese gamers just play different games. I don't think Gears/Halo/DeadRising/LostPlanet do well over there because it isn't a game type they have been cultured to play. Doesn't make them any better or worse, but inversely they might be wondering why Dragon Quest 8 didn't sell hard Stateside.

I'm now curious to look up numbers on a lot of our "big hits."

Apologies, Jim; I didn't mean to insinuate that the plight of Japanese women should be ignored, though upon rereading my last post, that's exactly what I did. if I can offer a retraction, I think I should start caring more about women's rights in Japan; they at least have some hope of progress, given that it's merely their society that is repressive, not their religion and leaders as well. I.E., it's going to be easier to get the Japanese to realize that women are a valid, competant addition to the workforce that aren't going to jump ship to get married or have kids at the drop of a hat, that it is to convince the cavemen living in the middle east that Allah doesn't want them to mutilate their women's naughty bits.

And they're absolutely wrong about Dead Rising. It's the best Zombie movie since the original Dawn of the Dead. (even though it's a game.)

"Japan is an inherently sexist, as well as racist, culture, moreso than western counterparts." Sounds sort of racist in itself, no?

You just can't go around saying stuff like that. It's how rumors get started.

Japanese culture has a lot of screwed up stuff in it, but they also freaking love Hayao Miyazaki movies, which are generally speaking the least sexist, racist, anything-ist movies there are. They censor games there like RE4 that we permit to be totally over violent and gross (and awesome).

My point is, you can't judge the whole culture by it's worst bits. It is safe to say that Japanese culture encourages repression more than the liberal west. When ever a culture is more repressed, it's dark side is darker.

Tron: No, my statement does not sound racist in the least and this is the problem we have nowadays where another culture can't be criticised for fear of those types of accusations. Not once did I say anything negative about Japan due to their genetic makeup. I am talking sociologically, and a critique of society does not = racism.

I can be just as critical of western society, as anyone who knows me long enough can attest to. Just ask me to write out an article detailing my feelings toward my countrymen in England and I think you'll find I can be equally, if not more, vitriolic.

I think all societies have their dark side. The Japanese are some of the most spiritually connected people in the world, and some of their art is the most beautiful in the world. I think the brighter and more beautiful a country is the darker it's dark side is, so yeah, I agree with tron on THAT one. Getting back to the point of this thread though, I think that John Martone is right in that they aren't really into fast paced action titles. It's well known that they're genetically predisposed to seizures and can't handle fast moving, bright imagery(ironic, considering some of their crazy pop-culture output). I think this is why RPGs have stayed so static and stagnant there as well, and is also why Square-Enix will always reign supreme over there, and thus the PS3 as well.

although I don't want to sound rascist, I have to agree with you there. Japanese have some pretty poor tastes. Also creepy(see boob pillows above.)

I also don't see why Lost Planet wouldn't do well there. It practically oozes anime bullshit out of every orifice.

@Crunshii

I think we realize that, we aren't fucking stupid. But there is a differnce between what is made and comes from japan and what they actually do in japan. The good stuff that comes out of Japan seems to be way more popular in other countries than there(except pokemon). And don't tell me that you don't think they are even a little arrogant. I mean shit, America and Europe and other countries buy their games and anime by the boat load yet when we release something there they don't go near it like it's diseased. The 360 is a good console yet they don't seem to buy it because it was made in America.

@ Jim - not to spin this completely 180 (again), but your discussion with Tron brings us to an interesting point. I felt like I was taking a huge risk, bringing islam into the discussion, because us dhimmi aren't allowed to criticize Allah. Just as any criticism of black culture, hispanic culture, gay culture, women's culture, at least in the politically correct west, will probably draw heat as being racist, sexist, or worse. Islam in particular; the world can see all the problems with brutal misogyny or schoolgirl panty vending machines, but if you point and say, "look, those *insert race here* are fucking cavemen!" Someone is going to call you a bigot.

I've personally had these feelings defending games like Manhunt and GTA as free expression against leagues of angry parents and anti-gamers who think we should be doing more constructive, healthy things, like joining the army. I'm actually somewhat relieved and refreshed that we could have a mature conversation about societally heavy subjects.

Thanks, Jim. You're a credit to this cut-rate gaming blog. ;)

I haven't read most of these posts so I don't know if someone has already mentioned it has anyone checked the percentages? 90k or so of a game sold to Japanese 360 owners is probably like 97% of the total 360 owners, that way it is a success.

p.s. I'm too lazy to look up actual figures and do math.

I can't stand it when people say that "no box" crap x means no here as well. kind of like when you cross something out, hmm. maybe they just dont like crappy shooters and zombies. And it is only about 45% of the xbox owners. Those games came out in america during a lull in 360 games. Especially Dead Rising.
